What protective measures must be taken? Why is a systematic hazard analysis so important? To serve as the basis for selecting personal protective equipment To meet the legel requirements according to the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the Ordinance on Hazardous Substances To guarantee maximum protection for the employees in question Because the many types of hazards are largely unknown 2 9
Workplace analysis Hazard assessment Measures Procedure for hazard assessment: 1. Workplace analysis What potential risks e.g. exposure from hazardous substances are there? What are the maximum permissible exposure levels? E.g. AGW limits* 2. Hazard assessment What hazard level are employees subject to at their workplace? Is the employee's health endangered? 3. Measures What measures can be taken to reduce exposure to a tolerable level? 3 9
Sources of danger Selecting necessary safety measures by analyzing and assessing potential risks which employees are subject to at their workplaces. How dangers arise? Design and set-up of a workplace Physical, chemical and biological influences employees are subject to at their workplace Selection and handling of substances, machines, devices and systems Employees not sufficiently qualified Working and manufacturing processes used 4 9
Hazard analysis factors In Germany, according to 7 of the Ordinance on Hazardous Substances, hazards posed to the health and safety of personnel must be determined based on the following aspects: 1. Properties of the substances used 2. Information by the manufacturer on safety and health (e.g. safety data sheet according to 6 GefStoffV (Hazardous Substances Ordinance)) 3. Extent, type and peiod of exposure (with consideration to all types of exposure) 4. Physical and chemical effect 5. Possible alternatives 6. Occupational conditions and manufacturing processes 7. Limit values of exposure (OEL lists, AGW levels)* 8. Safety measures already taken 9. Results of the work-related medical examinations Check your local regulations for national requirements * OEL = occupational exposure limits AGW = workplace exposure limits 5 9
Legal foundations of the hazard analysis In Germany a hazard analysis is stipulated and described by three institutions completely independent of one another. Furthermore, the analysis of hazards can be regulated individually by additional guidlines. Important documents on hazard analysis: BGR 190 Guidelines of the employer's liability insurance association GefStoffV Ordinance on Hazardous Substances ArbschG German Occupational Safety and Health Act 6 9
Taking measures A correct hazard analysis is the most important precondition for selecting the correct filtering respiratory device for your individual application! For your own sake and in the interest of your personnel, be sure to carry out your hazard analysis with the necessary care while adhering to the required methods and regulations to ensure the utmost in safety. 7 9
