Case Study Deb Smith, Mobility Manager District 2, North Central Idaho
Deb Smith, District 2 Mobility Manager serves as a liaison for improving mobility in the district and throughout the state; identifies local mobility needs and creates partnerships to fill gaps in service; promotes locals mobility and transportation improvements; charged with cultivating partnerships with local service providers, local elected officials, and public entities.
Few Public Transit Options Idaho covers 82,747 square miles and has 1.5 million residents. District 2 encompasses five counties, is 13,500 square miles, has 102,000 residents of which 21% are over the age of 60 and there is an average poverty rate of 17%. Geographic challenges include rapidly changing elevation, winding roads and narrow bridges. Employment centers are located in the far west center of the district.
So, how DO you start a vanpool? Shameless plug for CTAA go to wer.asp?a=1442&z=75 or call x724
Where people who work on the reservation live

Next Steps: City of Moscow is acquiring another van and we are mapping bedroom communities that are home to high concentrations of University of Idaho employees; mapping area federal employees, including forest service and national park workers, who are eligible to recover up to $230 per month of vanpool costs; mapping area manufacturing clusters to identify vanpool and carpool opportunities.
Learn about your local workforce On the Map An Interactive Mapping Tool Where workers live? Where residents work? How far they commute? Where businesses are located? What are the workplace destinations of people living in a particular neighborhood? Where do young residents work? What are the ages and earnings of commuters? How many high-wage workers live along a transit corridor and work downtown? Where are new businesses likely to draw workers from? Where should we add new bus routes and bus stops? Where should new roads be added?
Information is not only available for counties, metropolitan areas, and WIA regions but also for smaller areas (Census divisions and tracts, zip code areas) and non-county areas (tribal lands, military bases, school districts, legislative and Congressional districts). Can search radiuses of as many miles as desired (i.e. 2- mile, 4-mile, 6-mile radius of a city).
To use Local Employment Dynamic, you need A standard Internet borrower (Firefox version 2.0 or higher, Internet Explorer version 7.0 or higher, or Safari version 3 or higher). A screen resolution of 1280 by 1024 pixels is strongly recommended. 27 Examples of how we have used QWI: To see if turnover rates in manufacturing have increased over the last 15 years To see how many new hires there are despite the recession (used it to convince job seekers that there are actually some job openings these days) To see which industries have the highest proportion of baby boomers and will likely to be most swamped by upcoming retirements To see if teenagers were working in different variety of industries now than they were a few years ago To see which industries were hiring older workers To compare how the various age groups have fared during the recent recession
