3 1. INTRODUCTION The principal objective of this Continuing Professional Development (CPD) policy (herein CPD policy ) is to outline a framework for the continuing professional development of all PIA members (excluding members in PIA allied grades). This CPD policy outlines the policy aim, requirements for compliance, types of CPD activities and monitoring and administration of the CPD program. 2. PIA will use the CPD policy as a commitment to raising the standards of professional competence and improving recognition of planning as a profession. The CPD policy aims to help members view CPD as a benefit to their ongoing career and personal professional development, rather than a burden. 3. WHO DOES THIS POLICY APPLY TO? 5 5. WHAT AREAS SHOULD MY CPD FOCUS ON? PIA has defined 6 areas of practice that all great planners are competent in. 9 8. I M A REGISTERED PLANNER MEMBER, HOW DO I COMPLETE MY ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS CPD Plan: one of the most useful pieces of Continuing Professional Development you can do is to carefully prepare a CPD Plan. All professions change, requiring all professionals to continue to learn, debate, discuss and keep up-to-date on an ongoing basis. As a Registered Planner you are expected to reflect upon your current level of competency in the 6 practice areas and highlight what your CPD activities will focus on for the coming two years. As part of this plan, you need to show a commitment to development across a range of practice areas. Code of Professional Conduct Quiz: On top of your CPD plan, all Registered Planners must complete a short online quiz about PIA s Code of Professional Conduct once every 2 years. This gives members an opportunity to reflect upon the contents of the Code of Professional Conduct. 9. AUDITING AND VERIFICATION A selection of members will be chosen annually at random to have their CPD records audited and verified. This random selection will take a sample across the grades of membership. The audit will assess that: Adequate have been achieved for the past two year period. All requirements are met (including CPD plan and Code of Professional Conduct quiz completion for Registered Members) The verification will access that: All activities meet the requirements of this policy. All verifications and details have been recorded as required CPD activities cover a number of practice areas to ensure a good spread of skill development 10. COMPLIANCE WITH POLICY If a member is assessed as non-compliant with this policy, they will be contacted by PIA with details of the non-compliance and a timeframe for which to rectify any issues. PIA retains the right through the Code of Professional Conduct to trigger the action of dismissing membership if non-compliance continues. Registered Planner members will be targeted for action in non-compliance due to importance of maintaining the integrity of the grades intent. Page 9 of 15
