5 VISION MISSION IRMA envisions a world where the mining industry is: respectful of the human rights and aspirations of affected communities; provides safe, healthy and respectful workplaces; avoids or minimizes harm to the environment; and leaves positive legacies. To establish a multistakeholder and independently verified responsible mining assurance system that improves social and environmental performance.

7 + The Responsible Mining Assurance System will include: 1. Best practice standards that describe environmentally and socially responsible mine operations as well as legacy mine site management; 2. An independent third-party mechanism to verify implementation of the standards; 3. A membership program designed to generate and maintain long term support for the system from all key stakeholder groups; 4. Communication tools (such as certificates, approved claims and labels) that generate rewards for effective implementation by participating enterprises; 5. An organizational structure sufficient to ensure the long term stability and success of the system as a whole (through legal entities and associated personnel, governance and financial resources); 6. A way to register stakeholder complaints and resolve disputes.

9 + IRMA is an ISEAL Subscriber 9 ISEAL is a non-governmental organization whose mission is to strengthen sustainability standards systems for the benefit of people and the environment. Its membership is open to all multi-stakeholder sustainability standards and accreditation bodies that demonstrate their ability to meet the ISEAL Codes of Good Practice and accompanying requirements, and commit to learning and improving. IRMA intends to comply with the applicable ISEAL Codes of Good Practice, including those for: n Standards Development n Impact Assessment n Assurance

Intended to be Compatible with Other Standards and Systems Intend to collaborate with those who deliver corporate responsibility services downstream in the jewelry, building, electronics and other sectors. High Bar for Certification = Recognition for Best Practice Leaders With a mechanism for recognizing continuing improvement.

13 + The Structure of Chapters n Background: short introduction to the issue covered in the chapter n Objectives/Intent Statements: A short description of the key objectives that the chapter is intended to contribute to or meet n Scope of Application: a description of the conditions under which the chapter may or may not be relevant to particular mines n Criteria/Requirements: the requirements that must be met for an IRMA certificate to be issued n Means of Verification: ways that an auditor can verify that a requirement has been met n Notes: any notes related to the chapter and its requirements n Cross-References: how the chapter interacts with other IRMA Standard chapters

14 + Changes from v.1.0 to v.2.0 Informed by: Over 1400 comments submitted by over 70 individuals and organizations n The content of every chapter has been revised, some substantially to integrate public input and better meet the chapter s intent n Removed corporate level requirements to reflect focus on the mine site n Created a shorter version that does not include the draft Means of Verification n Removed Impact Indicators to be created later 2 field tests
