WHAT IS THE EARLY INTERVIEW PROGRAM? EIP is an on campus recruiting program and resume collect held in the summer. This year, UC Hastings EIP will be held from Monday, August 1st through Wednesday, August 10th. Employers participating in EIP are recruiting for summer positions and post JD positions the year before the actual start date. In other words, 2016 EIP employers are recruiting for positions that will start in the summer or fall of EIP employers range from large AmLaw 100 firms to public interest organizations to state, county, and federal government agencies, including the Air Force and Marine Corps JAG, local DAs, and local PDs. EIP is run exclusively on (HCO). This means you will be using HCO to find out what employers are participating in EIP and what their hiring criteria is, apply for positions (i.e., Bid ), review your interview schedules, and upload your application materials. However, you should also check your s because the Career Office and employers may be contacting you directly. STUDENT EIP PARTICIPATION AGREEMENT By participating in the Early Interview Program, you acknowledge and agree to abide by the following terms and conditions: 1) Participating students must attend all scheduled on campus interviews with employers unless the student has cancelled the interview through no later than 5:00 pm, two (2) business days prior to the scheduled interview. 2) Participating students agree to abide by the National Association for Legal Placement (NALP) Guidelines including, but not limited to, the requirement that students represent their qualifications and interests accurately, and other terms regarding integrity in the application process, accepting and rejecting offers, submitting accurate expense reimbursement requests, and accepting and keeping scheduled interviews. The NALP Guidelines are included in the Appendix to this Handbook. 3) Participating students understand and agree that all information in a student s account, including the student s resume and other application materials, may be reviewed by the Career Office, the Records Office, or other UC Hastings staff, faculty or administrative member for, among other items, the requirement that students represent their qualifications and interests accurately. 4) Students participating in the Early Interview Program also acknowledge that by the time of their interview(s) they will have paid or made satisfactory arrangements to pay for their Fall 2016 UC Hastings school fees. Failure to comply with any one of the above four requirement shall constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct and shall be referred to the Academic Dean for appropriate disciplinary measures, which could include, among other items, cancellation of that student s EIP privileges. 1 of 46

PREPARE: COMPLETE YOUR SUMMER SURVEY! Summer Surveys provide future students insight into the organizations they may be working at or applying to. You must complete a Summer Survey on HCO before you are allowed to bid on EIP employers. Employers will not see your Summer Surveys and you can edit them at a later time. When bidding opens on June 20th, you will be asked to complete a Summer Survey if you haven t done so already, so do it now!! 1. Click on the Early Interview Program tab on the left navigation bar. 2. This should automatically direct you to the Summer Survey My Surveys screen. Click on the Add New button to complete a summer survey. You can always edit your summer survey later. 3 of 46

PREPARE: COMPLETE YOUR SUMMER SURVEY! 3. Please complete the survey as thoroughly as possible. Click Submit when you are finished. a. The Summer Survey asks for basic information about the organization, including the diversity of its employees, location, size, your opinions about the organization, the work itself, and how you obtained the position. b. Employers CANNOT view these Summer Surveys. 4 of 46

PREPARE: RESEARCH PARTICIPATING EIP EMPLOYERS USING HCO QUICK TIPS ABOUT RESEARCH & USING HCO BEFORE STUDENT BIDDING BEGINS! You can use HCO to prepare for EIP in two ways: 1. Find out which employers are actually participating in EIP and review employer hiring criteria. 2. Check out Summer Surveys. Careful research of EIP employers is a must for two reasons: 1. You can only bid on a maximum of 35 employers. Make those bids count and bid on employers with interesting practice areas and realistic hiring criteria. 2. Research will help you carefully draft targeted and compelling cover letters, resumes, and other application materials, so you make a positive impact on the reviewing employer. WHO IS INTERVIEWING AT EIP AND WHAT IS THEIR HIRING CRITERIA? 1. Click on the Early Interview Program tab on the left navigation bar. 2. Confirm you are in the Employers/Bidding/Application screen and the 2016 Early Interview Program session. 5 of 46

PREPARE: RESEARCH PARTICIPATING EIP EMPLOYERS USING HCO 3. HCO will only show you the employers interviewing your class year. 4. Employers will appear in ABC order, in groups of 20. You can adjust this window to show over 250 employers at a time. You can also sort by Interview Dates or by Employer name. Click on the Review button to review the employer s schedule. 5. You can also search for Employers using the Keywords search bar or the More Filters (i.e., size, employer type, practice area, location) search option. Always click Apply Search. Please do not rely solely on search results. Employers often input incomplete information. For instance, many employers fail to include relevant practice areas in their EIP Schedule. Search results are only as reliable as the data inputted. 6 of 46

PREPARE: RESEARCH PARTICIPATING EIP EMPLOYERS USING HCO 6. After you click Review, you can see information about each employer s EIP Schedule, including hiring criteria, interview date, interview length, and contact information. BEFORE BIDDING OPENS ON JUNE 20TH, you will not be able to see what documents are required by the employer. For now, each document (i.e., resume, cover letter, unofficial transcript) is identified as not selected. ONCE BIDDING OPENS, a drop down box will appear next to each of the required documents (i.e., documents that the employer requires to be uploaded as part of your application or bid). Please see the Bidding section of this Handbook for more information. When navigating your search of employers on HCO, remember to use the Back to List button at the bottom of the Employer s Schedules screen. Using your browser s back button will not take you back to your search results. 7 of 46

PREPARE: RESEARCH PARTICIPATING EIP EMPLOYERS USING HCO CHECK OUT PREVIOUS SUMMER SURVEYS 1. Once you log on to HCO, you ll be on the Home page. Click on Search Summer Surveys to the right of your screen under Shortcuts. 2. While in the Summer Survey tab, click on Search. 3. 13 PREPARE: RESEARCH EMPLOYERS USING ONLINE RESOURCES & CAREER OFFICE RESOURCES 1. Use online resources to help you decide which employers to bid on. a. Check firm or organization websites and their social media. i. Most firms participating in EIP have highly functional websites that allow you to search by office, practice area, law school, and industry. Use this search function! 1. If you re interviewing for a specific office location, find out what practice areas that particular office focuses on. Who are the attorneys? Who are their clients? 2. Don t express an interest in a practice area when all those attorneys are based in Beijing (unless you are actually interviewing for a position in Beijing)! ii. Look at their representative clients, recent achievements, and published articles. This will help you get a feel for the organization s culture, prepare persuasive application materials, and respond to common interview questions. b. NALP Directory of Legal Employers: Detailed information about employers demographics, salaries, billable hours, partnership track, pro bono policies, practice areas, and more. c. Chambers Associate: associate.com/. Helpful online resource (we also have the book in our Career Office) gives law students insights into the leading law firms in the U.S. d. Chambers & Partners: Helpful online resource for law firms with international presence. e. Martindale Hubbell: Database of employers with searchable criteria and narratives. f. PSJD, formerly PSLawNet: A great resource for researching public interest and public sector employers, as well as plaintiff side law firms. g. Summer Surveys on HCO. Searchable database of evaluations completed by Hastings students. Just click on the Search Summer Surveys link on your home page. Many students are willing to be contacted take advantage of this resource and learn about employers from your fellow students! h. LEXIS: Advanced Martindale Hubbell searches (see Lexis research handout at office/students/career guides/index.php). i. Westlaw: The Westlaw Research tab for the Westlaw Legal Directory (WLD) and the Almanac of the Federal Judiciary (AFJ) databases, and the Career Resources tab for additional career resources 2. Use the Career Office! We have hardcopy resources you are welcome to look at or borrow. a. Chambers Associate: The Student s Guide to Law Firms. b. NALP National Directory of Legal Employers: Same information as available on the nalpdirectory.com site c. Make an appointment with a Career Office Counselor! 3. Please also review our video, EIP Success Strategies: Research Tools, for more research tips! 10 of 46

PREPARE: UPLOADING APPLICATION MATERIALS ON HCO IMPORTANT REMINDERS ABOUT YOUR APPLICATION MATERIALS. 1. Before you begin uploading your documents, make sure you ve drafted targeted resumes, cover letters, and other application materials required by EIP employers. Use your research about the employers and prepare compelling and thoughtful materials. Employers want to know that you want them too! Please see the Career Office handouts and/or make an appointment with a counselor! Check out our video, EIP Success Strategies: Crafting Application Materials, for more help. HCO will not allow you to bid unless you ve uploaded a default resume, so get started on it now! 2. You may upload a maximum 15 documents on HCO at one time (e.g., resumes, cover letters, grade sheets, etc.). This is why we recommend bidding in stages. After you make your first set of bids, you will need to delete some documents. The documents you delete from HCO will not be deleted from any bids or resume collections you previously submitted. 1. After logging on to HCO, click on the Documents drop down menu on the left of your screen. Then, click on Documents under the drop down menu. 11 of 46

PREPARE: UPLOADING APPLICATION MATERIALS ON HCO 2. From the Documents screen, click on Add New to upload your application materials. 3. Include a Label (i.e., name) for the document you are uploading, choose the appropriate document as the Document Type, and upload your document by clicking on Choose File. Click Submit. 12 of 46

PREPARE: UPLOADING APPLICATION MATERIALS ON HCO When uploading documents on HCO, it s best to save your files as PDFs. This allows you to preserve the formatting and margins on your documents. 4. After you uploaded your document, you should see them under your Documents tab. To upload a cover letter or any other documents, click on Add New and repeat Step Reminders about specific Application Materials. a. Resumes: Your Default OCI Resume will automatically be used for all bids. You can always select a different resume for individual bids. Select a different resume from the dropdown menu. i. GPA: If you choose to list your GPA on your resume, display it exactly as it appears on your transcript (not the Hastings website) or rounded down to the nearest onehundredth. Ex: A GPA of may be listed as or 2.96, but not ii. Class Ranking: While listing your class standing or class rank percentile on your resume is optional, you must not misrepresent that information if you choose to disclose it (i.e., by estimating your class rank). If you have questions about how you can best disclose this information on your resume without misrepresenting your status, please contact the Career Office. 13 of 46

PREPARE: UPLOADING APPLICATION MATERIALS ON HCO iii. Scholarly Publications: If you are selected for a journal, you may want to bring an updated resume with you to any interview. When indicating participation in a scholarly publication, list the journal title, position held, and applicable class year. Ex: UC Hastings Law Journal, Articles Editor, iv. Transfer Students: If you transferred to UC Hastings, indicate that your GPA or class standing was earned at your previous school b. Cover Letters: Because you are submitting tailored cover letters, include a salutation to the specific hiring contact. c. Writing Samples: Please do not upload a writing sample onto HCO. The files are too large for HCO. If a writing sample was requested, please bring it to your interview. d. Grade Sheets: Create your own Word document Grade Sheet using the same header on your resume and cover letter. i. Please do not scan and upload your actual transcript. HCO cannot handle these files. ii. Accurately include all class, unit, grade, and GPA information from your transcript or WebAdvisor. iii. You can also copy and paste your WebAdvisor transcript into a Word document. e. Other Documents. i. Undergraduate Transcripts: Some employers request your undergraduate transcript. If you don t have a copy, contact your undergraduate institution. Please allow yourself ample time for this; many schools still mail transcripts. You will need to create and upload a Grade Sheet HCO cannot accept scans of actual transcripts. Select Other Documents when uploading undergraduate grade sheets. ii. References: A request for References means a list of individuals whom the employer can contact. Provide the employer with the reference s name and contact information and briefly explain your relationship (i.e., Prof. X was my Contracts professor for my first semester at UC Hastings ). A list of 2 5 academic or professional references is appropriate. No personal references. Use the Other Documents button to upload a reference sheet. For further information, see the Career Office s handout on reference sheets. 6. Delete a Document on HCO. a. From the Documents tab, select the document you want to delete. 14 of 46

PREPARE: UPLOADING APPLICATION MATERIALS ON HCO b. Once directed to the document, click on the Delete button. 15 of 46

BIDDING ON HCO IMPORTANT REMINDERS BEFORE YOUR BEGIN BIDDING. 1. Do NOT wait until the last day to begin submitting your bids. The high volume of activity in the final days of bidding slows the system down significantly and you are more likely to experience technical problems. Avoid the drama don t procrastinate! 2. You do NOT need to make all your bids at one time. We recommend you bid in stages. You can always go back into HCO, add, delete, or change your bids and application materials up until the bidding deadline. 3. ALL BIDDING MUST BE COMPLETED BY THURSDAY, JULY 7TH, 5:00 PM PST. After that time, you will not be able to add, edit, or delete bids or application materials on HCO. Missing the bidding deadline because of a technical issue is still a missed deadline. The Career Office will not be able to help you! 4. Employers cannot see your rankings! But it is necessary that you rank your bids for the computerized lottery system. 5. Resume Collection applications do not count toward your 35 bid max although they are assigned a ranking. 6. Pay attention to employers outside of San Francisco! We know you love SF but consider maximizing your opportunities by bidding on employers located in Oakland or the Silicon Valley. Exclusively bidding on SF employers will reduce your odds of getting an interview because you re competing with a larger pool of candidates be a big fish in a small pond! 7. Watch out for Career Office s regarding underbid employers! Almost every year, some employers do not receive enough bids to fill their interview schedule. The Career Office may reopen bidding for a few days after the bidding deadline to allow you to bid on these schedules. * * * * * 1. YOU MUST COMPLETE A SUMMER ON HCO BEFORE YOU CAN BID. Please refer to the Summer Survey section of this Handbook for more information. 2. After you log on to HCO, click on the Early Interview Program tab on the left navigation bar. 16 of 46

BIDDING ON HCO 3. This should automatically direct you to the Employers/Bidding/Application page, which lists the employers participating in EIP. Please confirm you are in the 2016 Early Interview Program session. 4. Click on the Review button to the left of the employer name you would like to bid on. You will be directed to the employer s EIP Schedule page. 5. You will submit your bids from the employer s EIP Schedule page by submitting the requested application documents under Bid/Application Details on the top right of the EIP Schedule page. a. Please pay careful attention to the Additional Requests section of the employer s EIP Schedule. Employers often provide bidding instructions or make additional requests (e.g., students must select one office as a primary office of interest; students must bring a copy of their transcript to the interview; etc.) Please do not overlook this important information. b. Rank your bid for the employer by selecting a number from the Bid/Application dropdown menu. i. Resume Collection applications do not count against your 35 bids, but you will have to rank them. When you rank a Resume Collection, an additional ranking number (above 35) will appear in the ranking dropdown menu. For example, if you apply to two Resume Collections, you will see the numbers 1 37 when you go to rank another employer. ii. To a small degree, you can rank strategically. You may want to give a high ranking to an employer that is a reach for you to increase your chances of being selected for an interview through the lottery system. Please remember, this is NO way to guarantee being selected for a lottery interview. That s why it s a lottery! 17 of 46

BIDDING ON HCO c. Select the requested application documents from the drop down menu. Carefully review the application documents requested by each employer and, if you haven t already, prepare and upload those documents to HCO (see the Uploading Application Materials on HCO section of this Handbook for more information). d. To successfully bid on an employer, you must upload all application documents required by an employer. You will only see dropdown menus for the documents required by an employer. For example, if there is no Cover Letter dropdown menu, then the employer does not want a cover letter. Do not submit other documents unless requested by the employer. e. Enter your Preferred Location(s) if relevant. f. Click on the teal Apply or Update button to submit/update your bid. g. Remember: Use your Back to List button at the bottom of the employer EIP Schedule to navigate through HCO. Please pay careful attention to the Additional Requests! To bid on an employer, submit the required application materials by selecting them on the drop down menus and assign a ranking. 6. How to Update or Delete Bids. a. You cannot duplicate rankings (i.e., you cannot rank two employers #1). When you bid on an additional employer, the Bidding dropdown menu will show an * next to the number ranking you ve already used. HCO will prompt you to update your rank for the other employer. b. If you want to delete a bid: (1) simply change the ranking to no bid from the Bidding dropdown menu on list of the employers page; or (2) delete your bid from the employer s EIP Schedule page by changing the Bid/Application dropdown menu to no bid. 18 of 46

INTERVIEWS WHAT DO I NEED TO DO ON THE DAY OF MY INTERVIEW? 1. Show Up. Interviews will take place on weekdays from Monday, August 1st through Wednesday, August 10th. Interviews are usually 20 or 30 minutes long. Interviews will be held in the Gold Reading Room and in classrooms at 198 McAllister Street. 2. Check In. There will be a mandatory student check in table at the entry to the Gold Reading Room. You must check in at the table before your interviews. You will be considered a No Show if you have not checked in prior to your interview. Student No Show Policy: i. Failure to comply with the cancellation procedure will be considered student misconduct pursuant to the Student Conduct Code and will be referred to the Associate Academic Dean for appropriate disciplinary measures. (See Sections and of the Academic Regulations and Other Rules Applicable to Students, copies of which are available in the Student Information Center, Hastings Law Library, the Office of Student Services, and online under About/Offices & Services/Provost & Academic Dean s Office Publications, Catalogs and Policies. ii. Any student who has two no shows can have the remainder of their interviews cancelled and may be barred from participating in EIP and other on campus interviews in the future. 3. Be On Time: It s good practice to arrive minutes early for any interview. There will be a waiting area in the Gold Reading Room for students during EIP. 4. Bring Your Application Materials. Always bring additional copies of your resume and transcript to an interview, in addition to any materials the employer has requested. You also should bring a writing sample and a list of references to the interview, even if the employer did not ask for them beforehand. Employers may ask for these at the end of the interview. 5. Wear Professional Business Attire. Suits are appropriate for all student participants. When in doubt, feel free to ask a member of the Career Office. 6. CRASHING. If there is an employer with whom you did not get an interview, yet you feel you are a good fit for the organization, you may consider crashing the interview schedule. Crashing is done by showing up at the beginning of, end of, or during a break in the employer s interview schedule to introduce yourself, give the employer your resume, and ask if they have time to meet with you at some point during the day. You may not crash during another student s interview time or between interview slots. HOW SHOULD I PREPARE FOR THE INTERVIEW? 1. Prepare Questions and Answers. Do your research on the employer. Who are their clients? What practice areas do they have in the office you re interviewing for? Who are those attorneys? Think about specific examples to illustrate your answers to basic interview questions. 23 of 46

INTERVIEWS Make sure your answers are targeted to the specific employer you are interviewing with. Make sure to have questions prepared for the interviewer. Asking informed questions demonstrates your interest in the organization. Review the Career Office Handouts on interviewing, this Handbook, and other Career Office resources. 2. Research the Interviewer (If Possible). Some employers provide interviewer names in advance of the interview. If provided, the interviewer names will appear on HCO on the employer s Schedule page (when you click on the Review button next to the employer s name). Look up the interviewer s firm bio or LinkedIn profile. Occasionally, scheduling conflicts occur and a different interviewer may show up on the date of the interviews. Check interviewer names at the Student Check In table before your interview. Ask your interviewer for their business card. The Career Office will also maintain a reference binder of interviewer business cards. 3. Mock Interviews. UC Hastings alumni volunteer to conduct mock interviews with students to help them prepare for their job search. Watch for the to sign up. Sign up for an appointment with a counselor in the Career Office using AppointmentPlus. WHAT STEPS DO I TAKE AFTER THE INTERVIEW? 1. Call Back Interviews Respond to a callback invitation or any follow up contact by an employer within 24 hours. Employers often interpret a slow response time as lack of interest. Always try to respond by telephone, if possible. Usually you will want to dress up in a suit as you did for the EIP interview. Some employers will let you know in advance of an office visit that casual attire is more appropriate. If you are uncertain, ask the recruiter or a Career Counselor. 2. Student Interview Feedback Form In an effort to monitor the employers who interview UC Hastings students, the Career Office encourages students to complete a NALP On Campus Interview Form: Student Evaluation of Employer after each interview. Indications of inappropriate conduct on the part of the interviewers will be investigated promptly. 3. Student Initiated Grievance Procedures Employers who interview or list positions at UC Hastings agree to a policy of non discrimination. If you feel that you have been treated unfairly or discriminated against, please notify Sari Zimmerman, Assistant Dean, as soon as possible. The UC Hastings non discrimination policy is available online under Career Office/Employers/Policies & Standards and in the Appendix of this Handbook. 4. Offers and Acceptances. 24 of 46

INTERVIEWS To learn about the rules affecting the timing of offers and acceptances, carefully review the NALP Bulletin, Student Professionalism During the Interview Season, which is available online and in the Appendix of this Handbook. If you accept a job offer, you must immediately notify (by telephone, with a follow up letter) all employers you have interviewed with, and cancel all remaining interviews on HCO. See the Career Office handouts for tips on writing such letters. Please also notify the Career Office immediately of your new employment. NALP Acceptance Timing Guidelines: Generally, under the current guidelines, offers should remain open for at least 28 days following the date on the offer letter, or until December 30 (whichever comes first). 25 of 46

YOUR JOB SEARCH: BEYOND EIP 1. A Quick Note. EIP represents a fraction of the legal employers employers, like large AmLaw 100 law firms, that can project hiring needs years out. Generally, these firms have narrow hiring criteria. Small and mid size law firms also hire for summer and post JD positions, but recruit more informally. i. These firms do not participate in EIP because their hiring needs often arise quickly and they lack the significant administrative support to plan and coordinate such interviews. ii. They typically post their opportunities on HCO, other job boards, or hire from within their network. iii. Small and mid size law firms also hire part time law clerks during the semester and continue employing the clerks into the summer and beyond graduation. Remember, an effective job search is a diverse job search send applications directly to non EIP employers, network, and stay on top of legal job postings. 2. Other Recruiting Programs. Fall Semester OCI & Spring Semester OCI: Both Fall and Spring Semester OCIs attract private and public sector employers that interview on campus during the semester. i. The positions are posted on HCO and can be searched using the Fall OCI or Spring OCI tags or by doing a keyword search. ii. The Career Office handles scheduling logistics with the employer. iii. Private sector positions posted for Fall and Spring Semester OCIs are paid. U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) Programs i. The DOJ s applications for its Honors, Summer, and Volunteer Legal Intern Programs are online. ii. The application window for the DOJ Honors and Summer Intern programs is typically from the last week of July through the first week of September. iii. Interviews are typically scheduled in November. iv. Please refer to the DOJ s website for details. Additional Federal Government Hiring: A number of Federal government agencies conduct their summer and permanent hiring in the fall. Deadlines vary significantly, so check the Government Honors and Internship Handbook on HCO under Password Protected Job Search Sites. Public Interest/Public Sector Recruiting. 26 of 46

YOUR JOB SEARCH: BEYOND EIP 3. Judicial Clerkships. i. Many Public Interest and Public Sector (PI/PS) employers recruit exclusively during the Summer/Fall Recruiting season. If a PI/PS employer that interests you is participating in EIP or has posted a job on HCO, apply now. Summer and Fall months present a great opportunity to secure a summer position. ii. Applications for major public interest fellowships are usually due in September. Interviews typically take place between October and November. iii. PI/PS Day at the end of January is an excellent recruiting program for public interest/public sector opportunities. Keep an eye out for Career Office announcements sent at the end of Fall semester. iv. See the Public Policy Handbook under Password Protected Job Search Sites on HCO for Listings of public policy jobs and internship positions. v. PSJD, is also a great resource for locating PI/PS summer jobs, permanent jobs, and fellowships. Post JD clerkships last for one or two years prior to moving into a permanent legal position. Law firms and other legal employers are often happy to defer employment while clerks gain valuable experience. Some employers post summer and permanent jobs on HCO, but not as part of EIP or another on campus interview program. These employers will screen application materials and invite selected candidates to interview on site. 5. The Attorneys in Residence (AiR) Program. The AiR Program is a one year post graduate fellowship for the most recent graduating class and is focused on employers that do not typically hire first year attorneys, including small and mid size firms and in house legal departments. Employers and AiR attorney fellows make a one year commitment, but employment is ultimately, at will. Participating employers typically recruit in the late summer months after recent graduates have finished taking the bar exam and will hire anytime between August to February. If you are interested in learning more about the AiR Program, please contact Jessica Ourk at the Career Office. 6. Self Initiated Job Search. 27 of 46

YOUR JOB SEARCH: BEYOND EIP Many opportunities beyond those with formal application, interview processes and deadlines exist. If you are interested in large firms that are not coming on campus, make sure to find check the firm websites or find their contact information on Contact them in late summer/early fall to apply. The majority of UC Hastings graduates and law school graduates across the country work at smaller firms and a large number accept jobs in the government, business, and public interest sectors. Please visit the Career Office and read our announcements for programming during the school year, including the Small & Mid Size Firm Speed Networking Event in the Fall. 7. Take advantage of the Career Office! We are here to help you through the Summer and Fall Recruiting season. We encourage you to talk with one of our Attorney Counselors to answer your questions, refine your resume/cover letters, and be strategic about your job search and professional development. 33 EARLY INTERVIEW PROGRAM FAQs 1. What is the Early Interview Program ( EIP )? EIP is an on campus recruiting program and resume collect held in the summer. This year, UC Hastings EIP will be held from Monday, August 1st through Wednesday, August 10th. Employers participating in EIP are recruiting for summer positions and post JD positions the year before the actual start date. In other words, 2016 EIP employers are recruiting for positions that will start in the summer or fall of Is EIP the only on campus recruiting program for summer positions? Absolutely not! We also host on campus recruiting programs during the Fall and Spring semesters (Fall Semester OCI and Spring Semester OCI). Employers participating in Fall Semester OCI and Spring Semester OCI are recruiting for summer positons and post JD positions just like the EIP employers. The employers come on campus on a date they choose, during the semester, and interview students on the Mezzanine Level of the Gold Reading Room. You can search HCO for these positions by using the Fall OCI and Spring OCI tags. 3. What if I m not here between August 1st and August 10th? Can I still participate in EIP? Unfortunately, the dates for EIP are fixed and were set to optimize participation by employers. Please try your best to make arrangements to be here for EIP. This year, there are a few employers that will be conducting EIP interviews after August 10th please check HCO for those employers. We also have employers signed up for our Fall Semester OCI program and will be conducting interviews during the semester. You can search HCO for these employers too. If you absolutely cannot make the interview dates for EIP, you are welcome to contact the recruiting/hiring contact directly to try and make separate arrangements. Please note that EIP employers are extremely busy during the summer and may not be able to accommodate your schedule. You may consult with a Career Office counselor on how best to broach the subject. 4. What employers have participated in EIP in the past? EIP employers range from large AmLaw 100 firms to public interest organizations to state, county, and federal government agencies, including the Air Force and Marine Corps JAG, local DAs, and local PDs. You can begin reviewing the participating employers on HCO on Friday, May 27th. 5. What is HCO and how do I use it? HCO is Employers and the Career Office use HCO to post job opportunities and employer related events on campus. EIP is run exclusively on HCO, which means you will apply for positions on HCO (i.e., bid ), you will review your interview schedules on HCO, and you will upload your application materials on HCO. Now is the time to familiarize yourself with HCO!! Unless you changed it, your username is always your default UC Hastings address. If you forgot your password, click on the Forget Password button. A temporary password will be ed to you. 6. I m researching EIP employers on HCO, but I can t see what documents are required by the employer to submit my bid. How do I prepare? 30 of 46

If you are noticing this BEFORE JUNE 20TH, bidding has not yet opened and you cannot see which documents are required by the employer. You may see documents labeled as not selected. Once bidding opens on June 20th, you will see dropdown menus allowing you to select documents required by employers. 7. How do I cancel an EIP interview? If you must cancel an EIP interview, you must do so in a timely manner, as required by the UC Hastings Student Code of Conduct and NALP Guidelines. Failure to comply with the cancellation procedure will bar you from participating in your remaining scheduled interviews and future oncampus interview programs. You will also be referred to the Associate Academic Dean for appropriate disciplinary measures. The Bay Area legal community is small and word travels quickly do not do something that will detrimentally affect your legal career and the Hastings reputation. When to Cancel: Cancel an interview as soon as possible and NO LATER THAN 5:00 PM, TWO (2) BUSINESS DAYS PRIOR TO THE INTERVIEW DATE. NO CANCELLATIONS ARE ACCEPTED ON THE WEEKENDS. For example, if you have an interview scheduled on Monday August 8th, the latest you can cancel an interview is Thursday, August 4th at 5:00 PM. * * * Emergencies are handled on a case by case basis. You MUST call the Career Office ( ) immediately to advise of the emergency that prevents your attendance at an interview. How to Cancel: A Cancel button will appear next to each of your interviews, which can be accessed under the Scheduled Interview tab. Once the interview is cancelled, the interview will no longer appear on your list of scheduled interviews and a small red box with a C will appear next to the ranking you gave that bid. 8. I got a job offer and I accepted. What should I do with my scheduled EIP interviews? If you accept a job offer, you must immediately notify (by telephone, with a follow up letter) all employers you have interviewed with, and cancel all remaining interviews on HCO. See the Career Office handouts for tips on writing such letters. Please also notify the Career Office immediately of your new employment. 9. What is a resume collect? Some employers want to participate in EIP but are unable to visit the school to conduct interviews. They prefer to collect resumes or other relevant documents (often times, transcripts, cover letters, and writing samples) to decide whether they would like to invite a student for an interview. We often see employers from out of town opt to do a resume collect. 10. Do resume collects count against my maximum number of bids? While students have a maximum number of 35 bids, resume collects DO NOT count toward that number. Resume collects are assigned a ranking, but you will be able to rank the resume collect a number higher than of 46

PROFESSIONALISM TIPS 1. Cancel Promptly. If you decide not to interview with a given employer, be sure to cancel on HCO at least two business days before your interview; it opens the door for a classmate to interview and it enhances UC Hastings reputation for considerate and professional students. 2. Be On Time. It s good practice to plan to get to an interview at least minutes early. Always factor in time to find parking, getting through building security, or getting lost on the way there. 3. Organize Yourself. Find a professional portfolio for extra copies of your resume, writing sample, transcript and other application materials. If the interviewer asks for such information and you have forgotten to bring it with you, make sure to it to the interviewer that same day. 4. Coarse or Casual Language. It goes without saying the using coarse or profane language would be a mistake. In addition, although slang expressions and conversational fillers such as like, y know, so um and yeah, are used frequently in everyday speech, avoid them in an interview. Edit your language carefully and practice answers to interview questions that are free of such colloquialisms. To rid yourself of the habit, ask your friends and family to start pointing out each time you use a specific phrase. 5. Make a Good First Impression. In addition to your interview suit, your firm (but not crushing) handshake, good eye contact and your warm smile will complete the picture of a confident, prepared candidate. 6. Cellular Etiquette. Cell phones should always be off and out of sight during an interview. After interviews, consider not answering your phone if you do not recognize the number when you re in a store, restaurant, bar, crowded hallway, etc., so you don t end up taking an employer call in an inappropriate, distracting environment. 7. Say Thank You! Whenever someone gives you an interview, a job offer, a contact or advice, take a moment immediately to write a sincere note of thanks, whether it is hand written, typed or ed. Also send a thank you after your EIP interview and try to include something specific or memorable from your conversation. 8. Record Yourself to Prepare for an Interview. Recording yourself while you answer mock interview questions is an effective way to pick up on any nervous habits or expressions you use. 9. Consider Going Scent Free. Many organizations are opting to go scent free. A strong perfume or cologne may be distracting, or even uncomfortable for the employer. 10. Dress the Part. Suits are typically always appropriate for EIP interviews and call back interviews at law firms, government agencies, and with judges. But, if you are interviewing at a start up or a relaxed nonprofit, a suit may not be right. Always do your due diligence! 32 of 46

Principles & Standards > Student Professionalism Student Professionalism Student Professionalism During the Interview Season: A Quick Guide to Your Ethical Responsibilities in the Offer and Decision-Making Process View and print in PDF format: Student Professionalism During the Interview Season Fall interviewing season is stressful. Thinking about offers and decisions may seem like the least of your worries - and yet how and when you respond to offers makes a tremendous difference. Your offer could even expire if you don t focus on your response deadline. Equally important, your professionalism in responding to offers sets the tone for your relationship with employers who have expressed an interest in you. But what should that professionalism include? And what are all those "NALP timing guidelines" or "Principles and Standards for the Timing of Offers and Decisions" your career services office keeps talking about? Here are a few of the questions law students most often ask about these ethical standards. These answers provide you with a quick guide to the essentials of navigating the fall interviewing season with professionalism. What are the NALP timing guidelines and why are they important? What are the best practices for communication with employers? When, exactly, do I have to respond to offers? Do NALP's timing guidelines ever allow employers to require my decision sooner? How many offers can I consider at once? What if I need more time to decide? What if the employer I am interviewing with is not a NALP member or is not abiding by the NALP guidelines? How can I learn more? What are the NALP timing guidelines and why are they important? Virtually all ABA-accredited law schools and most of the largest legal employers of lawyers in the United States (large law firms, governmental agencies, and some corporations and public service organizations) belong to NALP. One of the fundamental reasons NALP was formed in 1971 was to promote fairness and informed decision-making during the recruitment process. Together, the law schools and employers belonging to NALP have developed and agreed to abide by the "NALP Principles and Standards," a set of guidelines that offers an ethical framework for all participants in the recruiting process. Under the NALP timing guidelines, employers are required to leave offers open for specified lengths of time to allow you to complete your interviewing schedule and make an informed decision about this important first step in your legal career. You also have certain ethical responsibilities affecting such areas as response dates and how many offers you 34 of 46
