2 Learning Objectives Explain why enterprise data governance (EDG) is essential to informed decision making. Identify the essential elements and seven principles of effective EDG. Recognize two elements of a new approach to data use and how they support EDG. Determine how to use the Children s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) approach and tools in your own organization to enhance EDG.

7 What Is Enterprise Data Governance? EDG: process for formalizing and guiding behavior over the definition, production, display, and interpretation of information and information-related assets. Validity Accessibility Accuracy Includes standards and policies governing: Data as a valued/strategic asset. Data management design and operation. Where data lives and who can access it. Responsibility and accountability for data. Internal and external compliance rules. Stewardship training and support. Transforming my data to our data. Transparency Timeliness Enterprise Data Governance Completeness Consistency Integrity Data governance is everyone s responsibility!

8 Why Is EDG Important? I need to be able to trust our data for decision making. What is the story behind our metrics? - Executive I want to know if other s data collection efforts and requests overlap with my team s so I can maximize productivity. - Manager Are there existing reports I can access instead of submitting and waiting on a new request? - Everyone I want to have the full picture of what data already exists out there and how certain metrics are defined and calculated. - Analyst I need to know who to contact when I have data questions or requests. - Everyone I need the ability to access data on my own and drill down to granular levels. - Clinician

9 CHOP realized that to bring together its disjointed data sources, and to standardize and improve quality and decision making, it would need to implement an enterprise data governance system.

10 Results Implemented a data stewardship model across the organization. 370 metrics certified through the governance process. EDG website usage: 1,500 visits/month. 67 unique users/month. On average, two EDG requests received per week.
