1 Airplane parts tracking using RFID in Airports The University of Texas at Arlington, Department of IMSE Surya Lokesh Bhargav Pentakota Pranusha Chalasani Sai Krishna Mekala Samuel I Okate samuel.okate@mavs.uta.edu Abstract The estimation of RFID in the support of supply chains of aircraft parts is of growing interest and is analyzed, especially in the proposed analytical model of this paper. This model helps us pick up a superior comprehension of the connections between different expenses brought about and the RFID impact on an aircraft support following procedure. Utilizing a RFID system, the company specialized in aircraft parts can accumulate savings. For this we need to consider that technology can remove inaccuracy in inventory delays brought about by mishandling in the component repair. This contextual analysis represents wonder through the utilization of numerical suppositions, highlighting the advantages of RFID. Furthermore, the estimation of RFID in aircraft maintenance is assessed utilizing sensitivity analysis, as per the parameters of the model of expense decreases in misusing repair parts and inventory control. The discoveries support the industry acceptance of RFID innovation, demonstrating that this is beneficial to support organizations of aircraft parts. Finally, in this paper we are considering the mishandling of the damaged parts of the air craft and also the cost reduction and the mishandling of the inventory parts. A sensitivity analysis is also carried out for the parameters that are used for the decrease in the utilizing the parts, cost reduction and the inventory control. Keywords Radio Frequency Identification, Airplane Parts, Cost analysis, mishandling, cost reduction. I. INTRODUCTION Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is a fascinating area for research. RFID has high potential in aircraft maintenance in light of the fact that Airbus and Boeing are officially utilizing RFID innovation for labeling the parts and components of aircrafts. RFI take into account the support data stored in tags, and empower ''constant'' information upgrade in a solid manner through radio waves. They are made of three primary components: A tag, a reading module and a middleware. The reader radiates radio wave signals and gets answers from the tags. The middleware joins the RFID information to data frameworks. Actually, Boeing began receiving RFID innovation in the late 1990s. The approval by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), one of the fundamental organizations overall in charge of the certification of new aircrafts, on the utilization of latent ultra-high frequency RFID tags on individual aircraft parts for business aircrafts. RFID innovation has high potential in the area of aircraft support. Broad prerequisites in regards to quality, secure, furthermore, documentation, and additionally high expenses for having aircrafts unmoving amid support, request proficient execution. The expenses of having planes unmoving amid impromptus support are assessed at US$23,000 every hour. (Brown, 2003) "The company, operating two airline maintenance centers one located at the Hong Kong International Airport at Chek Lap Kok (CLK) and the other at Tseung Kwan O(TKO), a large reclamation area in Hong Kong has two hangers capable of accommodating widebodied aircraft fully docked for maintenance." (Eric W.T. Ngai, 2014) The paper particularly addresses the accompanying questions (i) What is the estimation of RFID in aircraft parts maintenance follow up (ii) What is the effect of item level RFID on aircraft maintenance (iii) What quality do we pick up from RFID activities in aircraft parts follow up (iv) What are the relative advantages of this activity II. LITERATURE REVIEW The research in RFID has increased these days. RFID has its applications in retail industry and manufacturing industry. These days its use is growing and its costs are reducing so its benefits are recognized. Broad exploration has been performed on area for remote systems. A general review can be found. The greater part of the papers underscore that enhancement is imperative due to high communication costs, arrangement expenses, and characteristic postponements. A vigorous and very much composed system has turn into a foundation. Office area models may be important to focus the best configuration. From this point, we audit a few conventional office area models for the most part related to production network associations. Despite the fact that the connections in which these models are utilized may vary, their fundamental elements are dependably the same: A space including a metric, customers whose areas in the given space are known and offices whose areas must be resolved in conceivable spots as indicated by some goal capacity. RFID is an enabling technology in airports and aircraft, which helps improve security and ensures better baggage handling, safety against general hazards, and tolling without causing congestion. Two RFID part tracking systems were proposed and steered. Chang et al. (2011) exhibited the design and usage of a RFID-based load observing framework which upheld tracking and tracing in air-cargo operations. Keeping in mind the end goal to apply a legitimate RFID innovation, they mulled over Radio Frequency operational environment and tried distinctive RFID frequencies. Aircraft maintenance industry professionals have 1
2 demonstrated solid enthusiasm for RFID on the grounds that it can help enhance nature of administrations, encourage data sharing, guarantee safety, and acknowledge funds. These points of interest make RFID applications to a great degree valuable and intriguing. This rising innovation will keep on drawing huge consideration from the academe and professionals. III. HYPOTHESIS The company provides comprehensive aircraft base maintenance services that include heavy maintenance, modification, repair, and overhaul of commercial aircraft and their components in the Hong Kong International Airport. The company provides comprehensive aeronautical engineering services to airlines and airline operators in Hong Kong. It also provides a comprehensive line of heavy aircraft maintenance services. The RFID maintenance is the main part in the aircrafts. The maintenance, mishandling of the products, cost analysis and the inventory control of the parts are the important parts to be considered. These are the main term we have to maintain for better handling of the aircraft. In this paper we are presenting the mishandling of the parts, cost analysis, inventory control in order to have better maintenance of the aircraft. For this, we are proposing the analytical model to obtain the best results. IV. BACKGROUND Many components of the airplane which are in warehouse are transmitted using separate tags. The malfunctioned parts are dismantled from airplanes and sent to warehouse where tags are activated to both the new and old parts. The immediate replacement of the parts to be tracked is carried in the warehouse where automatic part replacement is achieved using the equal weight tags. The damaged parts are again tested and searched for faultiness if found guilty they are trashed. The different consequences of test observations of mathematical model are studied from the following approach. Initially m components are taken as parts to be tracked for example from i=i=1, 2,., m a supply chained approach. Poisson distribution is taken into consideration taking mean as u where damaged component is taken as i. Delay estimation caused due to mishandling of damaged components is given by the mathematical formula The term represent the probability of the term to be mishandled. The cost of mishandling can be evaluated by following the simple math calculations by taking the limited values of component list. Whereas the corresponding values would be taken into substitution consideration. Reduction of cost due to delay in repairing factor can also be studied using RFID tagging. The components under test are sent in the form of conveyor belt from customer to the warehouse and these consequences are carried as the form of closed loop frame. The initial investment cost might not be significant. The important thing to be considered is to make sure the fight flies back at the desired time without any delay. Thus delay cost is to be highly taken into consideration for the smooth process flow. Example A real life example can be considered by taking the consequences of the delay during the parts tracking there are six stages considered during the flow. The trucks carrying the damaged parts operate once in every 8 hour interval. The damaged parts can t be replaced till the next day. The repairing lead time can be written from the calculations used by the formula and the substituted values are to be [ ] 13 days. The outcome on calculation shows huge decrease of per lead time-period expected expense with full consistency on the stream of repaired part enabled by the RFID innovation. This is basically identified with the decrease in the measure of wellbeing stocks while keeping up same low level of danger of intrusion in the organization's support service. While it is additionally fascinating to note that the lessening in initial investment cost because of execution of RFID innovation for buy of security stocks for both types of components are fairly large. The gain would be less than 2%. The probability of these computational models can be replaced by the required new implementation of the RFID miss handle free systems. V. METHODOLOGY The advancement of this implementation of RFID is established by following Cost analysis of mishandling parts and inventory cost analysis. These two major analyses contribute in knowing the apt way of implementing the technology thereby enabling the companies for successful implementation of this technology. A. Cost analysis of Mishandled parts The figure 1 shows the probability with respect to the number of stages n. these values of probability are randomly generated and tabulated as follows. The processing time of each stage was generated at the range of pair (n, a total of nearly 100 values are considered and their corresponding outcomes are taken and plotted in the following graph. It can be inferred from the below graphs that the mishandling costa are directly proportional to both n and The results obtained from monitoring the RFID system with respect to mishandling cost and n. 2

Mishandling cost Reduction (%) With n The graphs corresponding to inventory cost reduction and the lead-time can be worked out as so the inventory cost reduction % with non-repairable rate. Table 2 Range of parts Mishandling Figure 1. Mishandling cost (%) with n The higher chances of mishandling make the process complex. By taking into consideration, the operation cost, aircraft maintaining cost. B. Cost analysis of Inventory The inventory cost analysis is given by considering ( of th RFID calculations. The expermental caluclations are carried on by considering the following set of values and are tabulated and graphically explained in the following approximation. The inventory cost reduction due to lead time and non-repairable rate are considered and graphically represented for further study. Range of αi Li [0.01,0.05] [0.05,0.1] [0.1,0.25] [0.25,0.5] [0.5,0.75] for Li pi for Li > pi
4 using this method and also the interruption of the service due to mishandling is also eliminated. Figure 2 Inventory cost reduction (%) with respect to From the above inventory cost reduction % gradually an hyperbolic function with respect to the lead time. The inventory cost reduction to the non-repairable rate can be studied from the following graphical representation whose values can be noted from the table 2 and VII. CONCLUSION The operators must perform the maintenance to ensure the safety. In this paper we have presented the analytical model in RFID for maintenance tracking of aircrafts parts. This model presented the various cost involved in the maintenance and in the development of aircraft parts management in the supply chains. A sensitivity analysis of the cost reduction in mishandling repair parts and inventory control are performed. This method resulted in savings of the operating cost. Hence, the risk of being penalized for not replacing the damaged goods due to poor inventory control is reduced by using this method and also the interruption of the service due to mishandling is also eliminated. VIII. REFERENCES [1] Bhattacharya, M. C. (2010). An exploratory study of RFID adoption in the retail sector. Operations Management Research, Figure 3 inventory cost reduction with respect to Form the above graphs; the percentage of the inventory cost reduction is considered by taking a non-repairable rate and lead time. It can be clear that the inventory handling contributes major position for the RFID implementation in tracking the airplane parts in a warehouse. Thereby making it more feasible. VI. RESULTS Therefore, the result from the above method shows that there is a significant reduction of cost around 30% on the repaired components, which are obtained by using the RFID systems. The proposal of this method resulted in the reduction of safety stocks by maintaining the low level of risk. There is also a reduction in the initial cost by implementing the RFID technology. These results conclude that the RFID implementation in the aircraft parts maintenance is ample. Hence, the risk of being penalized for not replacing the damaged goods due to poor inventory control is reduced by [2] Bottani, E. R. (2008).
