3 Collection and Compilation of External Trade Statistics Base to collect data: Decree Law on Statistics (N o 17/2003, of 1 October) art. 7, n o 5: Declarations of imports and exports from Timor Leste shall obligatorily be submitted to the NSD within three months of their receipt 3

4 Collection and Compilation of External Trade Statistics In practice: CUSTOMS (Asycuda) Between the 10 th and 15 th each month: Customs sends data of previous month to NSD (winzip file with txt files) via or CDROM National Statistics Directorate (Microsoft ACCESS Database) 4

5 Collection and Compilation of External Trade Statistics ASYCUDA System operational in Timor Leste since October 2003 Data obtained from Customs Declarations Goods classified by Customs using Customs tariff based on the international Harmonized Commodity Description and Coding System HS 5

6 Collection and Compilation of External Trade Statistics ONCE DATA ARRIVES TO THE NSD MAIN STEPS: 1. SAVE FILE 2. IMPORT DATA TO ACCESS DATABASE 3. SELECTION OF APPROPRIATE RECORDS FOR PROCESSING, USING PRE DEFINED QUERIES 4. CHECKING MONTHLY DATA SELECTED TO DETECT EVENTUAL ERRORS 5 SYSTEM QUERIES PRE DEFINED; OTHERS CAN BE DEFINED 5. EDITING DATA AND ADDRESS CUSTOMS TO CLARIFY/CORRECT ERRORS DETECTED IF NEEDED 6

7 Collection and Compilation of External Trade Statistics 6. SAVING PROVISIONAL MONTHLY DATA 7. APPENDING THE MONTHLY DATA TO AN AGGREGATE TABLE 8. FROM THIS AGGREGATE TABLE, PRODUCTION OF THE MONTHLY REPORT AND ANNUAL REPORT. 9. ACCORDING TO USERS NEEDS REPORTS CAN BE PRODUCED FOR OTHER PERIODS, FOR INSTANCE FOR QUARTERS. 7
