A Field Operational Test TeleFOT Impact Areas A FOT is characterized by a large number of users using the systems and services in their daily life in real driving conditions Research questions and hypotheses must cover all TeleFOT impact areas: Efficiency Environment Mobility Safety User up-take (Acceptance and adoption) The TeleFOT functions Traffic information Speed limit information Speed alert Navigation support (static) Navigation support (dynamic) Green driving support ecall 6 3
The TeleFOT functions Traffic information Speed limit information Speed alert Navigation support (static) Navigation support (dynamic) Green driving support ecall 7 What is traffic information? The system provides drivers with real-time information about the status of the traffic system (including congestions, weather conditions, road works, crashes, etc.). The system draws on external databases and links to a traffic control centre. It is designed to make the driver aware of the actual as well as potentially critical traffic conditions in the nearest road and street environment. 8 4
What is navigation (dynamic) support? Guide the driver to a destination set beforehand, through locating the vehicle (using a positioning system) and calculating "best path" (in terms of travel time, distance or other preferences) by the use of relevant algorithms. The algorithms also take into account the actual (and real time) status of the traffic system or other pre-selected topics. It is designed to provide navigation support to the driver to find the way towards a pre-defined destination, the current traffic situation and other pre-selected conditions influencing the traffic process are also taken into account 9 Functions per Test Site FOTs LARGE SCALE FOTs FIN SWE UK GER FRA ESP ITA GRE TI SLI SA NSS NSD GDS ecall DETAILED FOTs FIN SWE UK GER FRA ESP ITA GRE TI SLI SA NSS NSD GDS ecall ACC FCW CAS LDW LKA There are in principle 18 different FOTs to be performed at the eight Test Sites 10 5
Comments to the table There is a possibility to find cases where both single functions and typical combination of fucntions can be idnetified in at least two or three Test Sites. Some remarks In some sites SA or SLI are combined with GDS (FIN, SWE, ESP). The potential influence of these functiuons on each other must be thoroughly discussed as a GDS feature often is related to harmonisation of speed and even will propose low speed driving. The functiuon NSS is tested in most of the test sites (SWE, UK, GER, ESP, ITA, GRE). The specifics of the sytems which provide the function NSS must be further compared in order to find ways to make sure that a comparison of the results can be done with some reliability. In the Italian test site all functions made available to the driver will be tested as one entity. They are NSS, NSD, SLI and SA. An analysis (based on driver task models, etc.) must be made in advance Mobility impact Top-down approach Amount of travel number of journeys length of journeys Travel patterns travel mode route time budget timing destination Mobility choice mobility choice enablers mobility choice constraints Journey quality stress subjective safety comfort other quality issues 12 6
Research questions, hypotheses, functions (mobility) Examples RQ1.5 Is the number of other journeys affected? RQ2.1 Is the length of journeys in distance affected? RQ2.2 Is the duration of journeys affected? M-H1.5 Number of other journeys undertaken is likely to increase (NAV, TI)/decrease (GD). M-H2.1 There is likely to be an increase (TI)/decrease (GD) in travelled distance. NAV is likely to decrease distance in matched origin/destination but increase other distances M-H2.2 There is likely to be an increase (SA, SI, GD)/decrease (NAV, TI) in time spent travelling. (only nonprofessional fleets; functions: TI, SI, SA, GD, NA) (all fleets; functions: TI, SI, SA, GD, NA) (all fleets; functions: TI, SI, SA, GD, NA) RQ3.1 Is there a M-H3.1 There is likely to be an change in commuting increase (NAV, TI) /decrease (GD) (only nonprofessional mode of travel? in the use of private car for commuting. fleets; functions: TI, SI, SA, GD, NA) VTT CIDAUT CIDAUT CHALMERS CHALMERS ETRA ETRA VTT 13 Research questions, hypotheses (safety) Examples RQ2 Is the amount of H2.1 Subjects report a change in time on the road the number of trips undertaken affected (how long because they have the device travel takes place for)? H2.2 There is a change in the distance travelled between comparable origins and destinations H2.3 Subjects report a change in the distance travelled between comparable origins and destinations H2.4 There is a change in the duration of journeys travelled between comparable origins and destinations H2.5 Subjects reports a change in the duration of journeys travelled between comparable origins and destinations H2.6 There is a change in the length of time driven without a break RQ3 Does the device cause distraction? RQ 4 Is speed affected? H3.1 The duration and/or frequency of glances to defined target areas of the visual scene changes H4.1 The number of speed violations / proportion of time spent in excess of the speed limit changes with the device H4.2 There is a change in average Speed DFOT VTT LOUGH CIDAUT TBD by lead Partner consultation with resources TBD by lead Partner consultation with resources TBD by lead Partner consultation with resources 14 7
Data collection means Data loggers Questionnaires Travel diaries Interviews Video recordings Usability testing 15 Large-scale FOTs - s An unobtrusive environment Not even a quasi-controlled experiment Only a minor intervention by means of questionnaires and travel diaries Minimum 50 test subjects Long term Minimum 6 months Mature functions Found in a modern transportation context 16 8
Detailed FOTs - DFOTs Use of functions scenarios/use cases/tasks What is the normal use of the function? What is the purpose? Is the function working as intended? Is the information available/sufficient/ accessible/comprehensive? If these prerequisites are OK, then a quasicontrolled experiment is conducted where the subject is asked to perform function-related tasks in given scenarios/use cases to answer research questions on distraction, stress, etc. 17 What answers can be expected? Interpretation of results some open issues Data analysis work is related to impact areas Will there be significant results? How to incorporate DFOT outcome? How to single out the impacts of one function when the driver encounters a combination of functions? How to take usability issues into account? HMI designs, etc. Are the intentions of the support function met? Are all negative impacts identified? Is there room for improvements? Can the Euroepan perspective be addressed, and how? 18 9
