1 DAIMLERCHRYSLER MANUFACTURING TECHNICAL INSTRUCTIONS - SAFETY Subject: Guidelines for Pedestrian Safety Aisle, Dock and Storage Area Identification ISSUE DATE: 10/1/2004 EFFECTIVE DATE: 10/1/2004 REVIEW DATE. New SMI SERIES & NO. SMI Safety Manufacturing Instruction (SMI) 161 Guidelines for Pedestrian Safety Aisle, Dock and Storage Area Identification PURPOSE This document establishes minimum guidelines for pedestrian safety aisle, dock and storage area identification for newly constructed Chrysler Group facilities. It is not required for existing facilities to comply with these guidelines, except in the case of a total renovation of an area, such as a dock or other area, which is upgraded off the existing foundation or requires a new footprint/layout. Moreover, it is understood that the application of these guidelines are more conducive to some operations and facilities than others. It is recognized that these guidelines are not feasible in some circumstances in existing facilities due to factors such as: space constraints, vehicular and pedestrian traffic requirements, material flow, existing flooring and color schemes and other like considerations. In those instances where the total renovation of an area is occurring and considerations such as the aforementioned do not exist, then these guidelines will be given strong consideration for implementation so long as they can be accomplished within reasonable fiscal parameters and they do not impede throughput of the operation. ORGANIZATIONAL COMPONENTS AFFECTED This document applies to all DaimlerChrysler - Chrysler Group (Chrysler) operating units in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. GENERAL This policy will contribute to an enhanced visual control system and increase individual awareness of both potential personal risk and expected behaviors. It should continue to be recognized that all aisles are not pedestrian aisles. Pedestrian aisle identification is used to designate specific parts of an aisle for pedestrian traffic flow. It should be noted that there will be times when powered industrial vehicles (PIVs) will be required to cross over the designated pedestrian aisle identification markings.
2 PERIODIC FACILITY REVIEW FOR DETERIORATION Each location will conduct, at a minimum, a semi-annual review of all pedestrian safety aisle, dock and storage area identification markings for deterioration. Areas identified as being discrepant or deteriorated shall be repainted in a timely manner. PEDESTRIAN AISLE IDENTIFICATION Clearly marked (yellow) pedestrian aisles 36 inches wide in all main aisles and aisles where there is significant pedestrian traffic. Footprints (yellow, and in the shape of a foot ), spaced no greater than 10 apart (or optional solid fill with blue), located inside the pedestrian aisles (See Appendix A, diagram). Clearly marked intersections with 45-degree corners, where possible. Stop signs either printed on the floor or posted (at eye-level) at main intersections that have significant traffic. SHIPPING AND RECEIVING DOCKS Clearly marked (red) perimeter of the dock area as an area restricted to authorized personnel only (See Appendix B, diagram). Signage either posted at eye level or printed on the floor indicating a zone restricted to authorized personnel only. PIV operators assigned to dock area and authorized personnel entering a restricted dock area are required to wear highly visible vests. Barrier guards surrounding personnel workstations located inside restricted dock areas. STORAGE AREAS (CENTRAL MATERIAL AREAS AND BULK) Clearly marked (red) perimeter of the storage area as an area restricted to authorized personnel only (See Appendix C, diagram). Signage either posted at eye level or printed on the floor indicating a zone restricted to authorized personnel only. PIV operators assigned to storage area and authorized personnel entering a restricted storage area are required to wear highly visible vests. Foot-printing marked on floor designating specific location for storage containers and pedestrian aisles. Barrier guards, as necessary, to protect adjacent areas. POWERED INDUSTRIAL VEHICLES Clearly marked (foot-printing) designated parking areas for PIVs not in use, such as during shift changes. FLOOR PAINT/COATING REQUIREMENTS AND SUPPLIER System 1- PPG/Pittsburgh Paints Aquapon WB 98 series waterborne epoxy PPG Aquapon WB 98 line waterborne epoxy is to be used for identification where floor area is subject to light to moderate PIV and vehicle traffic.
