1 DAIMLERCHRYSLER MANUFACTURING TECHNICAL INSTRUCTIONS - SAFETY Subject: INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE IDENTIFICATION OF FACILITY PIPING SYSTEMS ISSUE DATE: 9/1/1992 EFFECTIVE DATE: 12/1/1988 REVIEW DATE. 1/22/2003 SERIES & NO. SMI PURPOSE To establish a uniform system to assist in identification of the types of materials conveyed in piping systems and their direction of flow. This is accomplished by specifying a uniform color and legend code to identify the general categories of piped materials. Use of this instruction will facilitate the identity the pipe content, thereby promoting safety and lessening chances of error, confusion, or inaction in times of emergency. 2.0 SCOPE This instruction is limited to the identification of contents of facility piping systems. It does not apply to electrical conduit, pipes buried in the ground, labeling of hazardous materials, machine tools, dies or equipment. Refer to Coating System Standard Section 1 for color codes which apply to machine tools, dies and equipment. 3.0 REFERENCES Federal and State Occupational Safety and Health Acts A.N.S.I. A "Scheme for the Identification of Piping Systems" 4.0 FUNCTIONS AFFECTED Advance Manufacturing Engineering Plant Facilities Engineering Employee Safety Special Security Operations Industrial Hygiene 5.0 OPERATIONS AFFECTED DaimlerChrysler Corporation 6.0 INFORMATION AND INSTRUCTIONS 6.1 Definitions SMI-111, Page 1 of 11

2 Piping Systems: For the purpose of these instructions, piping systems shall include pipes of any kind, except electrical conduit, and, in addition, fittings, valves, and pipe coverings. Supports, brackets, or other accessories are specifically excluded from applications of this standard. Pipes are defined as conduits for the transport of gases, liquids, semi-liquids, or plastics. 6.2 Classification of Materials A. Materials Inherently Hazardous 1. Flammable or Explosive. This classification includes materials which are hazardous to life and/or property because they are easily ignited. It includes materials known as fire producers or explosives, such as gasoline, naphtha, thinners, kerosene, solvents, and oils. 2. Chemically Active or Toxic. This classification includes materials which are hazardous to life and/or property because they are corrosive, or are in themselves toxic or productive of poisonous gases, such as acids, alkalis (caustics), process waters, compressed gases, etc. 3. At Elevated Temperatures or Pressures. This classification includes materials which are hazardous to life and/or property when their release from the piping would occur in sudden outbursts, having a potential for inflicting injury or property damage by burns, impingement, or flashing to vapor state, such as steam, condensate water, cooling tower water, hot water, etc. 4. Radioactive. This classification includes those materials which are hazardous to life and/or property because they emit ionizing radiation. B. Materials of Inherently Low Hazard This classification includes all materials which are not hazardous by nature, and are near enough to ambient pressure and temperature that people working on systems carrying these materials run little risk through the release of these materials, such as drinking water. (Potable water) Potable Water. Potable water is defined as water safe for human consumption supplied from a source approved by a local health department. C. Fire Quenching Materials This classification includes sprinkler systems and other piped fire fighting or fire protection equipment. This includes water, chemical foam, CO2, etc. 6.3 Method of Identification Refer to 7.2 Piping Label Standards Chart Legend Legend identifies pipe content. Positive identification of the content of a piping system shall be by lettered legend giving the name of the contents in full or unabbreviated text (see Table 1). Arrows shall be used to indicate direction of flow. Use legend to identify contents exactly.refer to 7.2 Piping Label Standards Chart. Legend shall be brief, informative, pointed, and simple for greatest effectiveness. Legends shall be applied close to valves ( maximum space of 12 inches) and adjacent to changes in direction, branches, and where pipes pass through walls or floors, and at frequent intervals on straight pipe runs (sufficient to identify clearly). Identification may be accomplished by stenciling, the use of tape, or markers. In any situation, the number and location of identification markers shall be based on the particular piping system Pipe Markers The identification of the pipes with pipe markers is the most economical. The background for the legend must SMI-111, Page 2 of 11

3 conform to Table #2. These pipe markers may be the waterproof fabric, which is a heat-resistant, self-sticking type, or the waterproof reflective type. A stencil shall be used if an un-insulated steam pipe is identified. The marker, if possible, should be wrapped around and attached to itself. A sodium silicate coating can be given each marker, if desired. Tables 2 and 3 illustrate the size and color to be used for the legend. Color to be used to identify the characteristic properties of the content are shown in Table #2. Color may be displayed on or contiguous to the piping by any physical means, but its use shall be in combination with legend. Color may be used in continuous total length coverage or in intermittent displays. Pipe lines shall be identified at changes in direction (tee's, el's, etc.), within 1 of valves, and when they extend into or out of walls, floors, or equipment. The lines should be identified on straight runs at least every 50 feet. The intervals may be equal or unequal. It is best to change the interval so that markers are well spaced rather than have two (2) markers close together at the end or near a change of direction (see Figure 1). Table 2: Classification of Materials and Designation of Colors Color Color of Classification Legend Field Letters for Materials Inherently Hazardous Flammable or Explosive Yellow Black Chemically Active or Toxic Yellow Black Extreme Temperatures or Pressures Yellow Black Radioactive Yellow Black Materials of Inherently Low Hazard Liquid or Liquid Admixture Green White Gas or Gaseous Admixture Blue(Dk) White Cold Potable Water Green White Fire Quenching Materials Water, Foam, Co2, etc. Red White Fire Protection Systems Fire Protection Systems on grid system fire protection piping shall be painted red per color legend and will not SMI-111, Page 3 of 11

4 require label identification or directional arrows. Each grid system fire protection zone shall be identified with a sign attached to the base of the riser showing the zone number and a white on red legend located approximately six feet above the floor on the riser stating RISER #. Additionally, four signs per zone shall be attached by chains to the upper section of the riser with the three remaining signs randomly located hanging from the zone branch lines (truss area of the building). Note: This system of identification is not retroactive over non-grid system labeling practice: Type and Size of Letters Maximum contrast shall be provided between color field and legend for readability. Table 2 gives directions for color of legend on various color fields covered in this instruction. Use of letters of standard style, in sizes ½", (13mm) and larger is recommended. Refer to Table 3 for specific size recommendations. For identification of materials in pipes of less than 3/4" (19mm) in diameter, and for valve and fitting identification, the use of a permanently legible tag is recommended. Attention shall be given to visibility with reference to pipe markings. Where pipe lines are located above the normal line of vision, the lettering shall be placed below the horizontal centerline of the pipe Identifying Direction of Flow The direction of flow markers should be the same material and color as the pipe content markers. A direction marker is used with each pipe content marker, and the arrow always points away from the marker. On grid system fire protection systems, flow direction is not required. The following sketches depict some of the pipe connections which may be found in Chrysler facilities. These figures are shown to illustrate the method to be used to identify piping systems.
