4 Warehouse Storage & Material Handling Equipment Plastic totes are manufactured in hundreds of various styles, sizes and materials. Totes are designed in styles required by various industries. The following is a list of features: drainage holes in bottom, hand holds, stacking rims; for high/low temperatures, smooth walls, thick base; modular, straight wall, for high/low temperatures; textured bottom, stack on lids, stacking box; for 36 deep shelving, external ribbing, color coded; nestable/stackable, straight side walls, collapsible; reinforced side/bottom, stack on lids, nestable; mesh/side or bottom, label slot. In many cases, new or used totes are purchased with many features not really utilized but available if needed. Tote features include type of material: ABS Plastic Polypropylene Fiberglass Polyethyene Each of these plastics provide special features that could be required for your particular application. In the case of fiberglass, the main feature provided is its ability to be unaffected by water, oils, and most chemicals. In addition, fiberglass withstands specific high and low temperatures. Other features allow totes to be used in material handling applications such as pick modules, shelving storage or for lower cost shipping. The food industry requires totes that protect and organize food for transit to customers. Totes must be impervious to most industry solvents and will not corrode or rot. Thick uniform walls with label holders for identification are also required to allow cube stacking for storage and shipping. The plastic chosen for these totes in some cases is high-density polyethylene. Other plastic material could be chosen to meet additional requirements. General dry goods industries also choose their totes according to the application. When storing items in shelving for order picking, the tote choice can be determined by product size and weight. The desired tote when full must be within the shelving capacity. Different tote colors can indicate weight capacities to easily alert operators. In certain manufacturing applications, used plastic totes can be chosen with features such as size and stacking features so full totes easily stack on pallets for removal by a forklift or onto a conveyor for transport to the next operation. In these cases, product temperature and/or oily product conditions will require possibly fiberglass totes that are not susceptible to certain temperatures and/or machine oil. The examples chosen allow customers to pick and choose the best tote for their operation. In most cases, the more features required will result in a higher cost. The following questions that must be answered are (1) is the tote chosen based on required features, (2) based on cost and (3) can a used tote that meets all the feature and cost requirements be chosen? A typical cost for a High Capacity Fiberglass tote with a capacity of 3000 lbs, with a size of 24.1 L x 11.4 W x 6.9 H is $22.90 ea. or $11,450 for 500 totes. If the 3000 lb capacity is not required and a high density polyethylene tote is chosen with a size of 24 L x 15 W x 5 is $19.50 ea. or $9750 for the 500 totes. $1700 can be saved. The case for a 3rd choice is will a pre-owned/used tote do the job? The estimated cost for a used tote of equal specifications would be $9.75ea for 500 totes at a cost of $4,875 for a savings of $4,875. The final question that must be asked is which tote will do the job and how to choose. The approach that is recommended is to establish the minimum tote specifications required for the application keeping in mind that extra features lead to higher costs. Next, contact suppliers of each of the above examples and ask them to submit a quote for the x number of totes including a lead time and a sample tote for testing. 4 The choice can now be made based on the testing and one or more requirements: quality, specifications, lead time, and

It is the responsibility of Buyer (and not ASI) to determine the suitability of the goods for their intended use or fitness for any particular purpose. Capacities: ASI does not provide written or verbal acknowledgement of weight capacities on any used equipment and the customer agrees to seek out the manufacturer or visit their website to acquire such information as it relates to new product weight capacities. Customer may also hire an engineer to calculate such capacities. It is also the responsibility of the customer to attach capacity plates to each rack. Assignment of Warranty: If the goods sold herby are new, ASI makes no warranty of any kind or nature with respect to the same as set forth above. (Item 1), but does hereby assign, convey, transfer, and deliver to Buyer all of ASI s right, title and interest in and to any such warranty made by the Manufacturer(s) of the goods sold hereby to the entire extent that any such warranty(ies) is/are extended to ASI, by the manufacturer thereof. No Cancellations: Orders are not subject to cancellation, except with the written consent of ASI, which need not be given. Returned Goods: Goods purchased may not be returned without written permission from ASI; a restocking fee of 20% will be applied to all returned material. Therefore, only merchandise credit (valid for one hundred and eighty (180) days) will be issued to Buyer. Refused Goods: Orders refused by Buyer will be subject to a restocking fee of 20%, costs of labor, and return freight charges. F.O.B. Point: ASI goods sold hereunder shall be delivered F.O.B. its shipping point and shall be at the risk of Buyer from the time the goods are delivered to the carrier by ASI at the point of shipment (ASI facility), unless other delivery terms and/or conditions are specifically stipulated by ASI and Buyer herein. ASI will assume no responsibility for any loss caused by non-delivery at a specific time or date. Damage in Transit: For your protection, Buyer should examine each shipment carefully to determine if there is any evidence of damage or shortage in transit. Buyer should insist that delivering carrier make appropriate notation on the freight bill before Buyer signs it. If concealed damage is discovered after receipt of shipment, Buyer should immediately notify the carrier, requesting an inspection report to support any claim Buyer may have. Any claim for damages or shortage in transit must be filed with the delivering carrier. ASI will not accept returns of merchandise damaged in transit. Buyer s recourse is with the delivering carrier. Past Due Accounts: All accounts, if not paid when due, are subject to a 1.8% per month carrying charge until paid in full. Other Charges: Customer agrees to a weekly retention fee for orders that are not picked up or shipped upon written notification of completion. Indemnification: Seller shall not be liable to Buyer for, and Buyer shall defend, indemnify and hold seller harmless from all liability, claim, loss, damage or expense of any kind or nature including, but not limited to, Attorney s fees, caused or allegedly caused, directly or indirectly by (a) the possession, use or performance of the goods by Buyer, (b) any interruption or loss or service, use or performance of the goods, (c) any loss of business or profits or any special incidental or consequential damages, even if the Seller shall have knowledge of the possibility of such potential loss or damage, (d) damage to the goods or other property under any theory, and (d) injuries to persons occurring due to the acts of negligence of Buyer and/or any third parties. This agreement shall be governed by the laws of the state of Rhode Island and the parties consent that all controversies are subject to the exclusive jurisdiction and venue of the State of Rhode Island courts. The buyer expressly agrees to pay all costs and reasonable attorneys fees of ASI in connection with any legal action brought by or against ASI to either enforce or successfully defend the terms of the Agreement. Costs of Collection: In the event that all or any part of the amount due hereunder is not paid, as required, all costs of collection of the same (including Attorney s fees and costs of litigation) incurred by ASI shall be paid by Buyer to ASI. Governing Law: The validity, interpretation and legal effects of all contracts, agreements and sales/purchase orders shall be governed by, and the rights and liabilities of the parties thereto shall be determined in accordance with, the laws of the State of Rhode Island, and, for the purpose of resolving any issue pertaining to conflicts of laws, all acts to be performed and/or observed thereunder shall be deemed to be fully and solely performed and/or observed within the State of Rhode Island.
