2 IMPROVING ROAD SAFETY > I MPROVING SAFETY 01 IN OUR BUSINESS ROAD SAFETY IS SIGNIFICANT IN OUR LOGISTICS DIVISIONS. IN TOTAL, THESE DIVISIONS TRANSPORTED GOODS OVER MILLION KILOMETRES DURING THE YEAR, USING ROAD, RAIL AND INLAND SHIPPING NETWORKS. LOGISTICS AFRICA Most transport in the Africa region takes place by road, and road safety is therefore a key priority for the Africa division. The division is the largest logistics provider in South Africa and our ongoing focus on road safety ensures a position of sector leadership. The division has actively promoted road safety during the year through a range of approaches. Some of the safety measures which have been put in place include: >> The introduction and roll out of the Africa Safety Rules throughout the businesses to support development of a stronger safety culture in the division. The Safety Rules are laminated into driver sun-visors and key rings. >> The formulation of internal audit protocols on safety, to standardise procedures and processes. >> A process to audit sub-contractor safety, to ensure that business partners and contractors have sound systems in place to manage road safety. >> The introduction of independent accident reviews, to provide better insight into the root causes of accidents. >> Development of a fatigue management policy, which has been drafted and is being reviewed by operations. >> A project to ensure that all operations are accredited with Road Transport Management System (RTMS). RTMS is an industryled, voluntary self-regulation scheme that encourages consignees, consignors and transport operators engaged in the road logistics value chain to implement a vehicle management system with the objective of preserving road infrastructure, improving road safety and increasing the productivity of the logistics value chain. >> Continuing implementation of the drive-cam system (on board cameras), which has been invaluable in the division s efforts to understand the root causes of accidents. The system also creates awareness around near misses and enables proactive management.

3 ROAD SAFETY > IMPROVING SAFETY TRAINING OF DRIVERS IS ONGOING AS AN ESSENTIAL PART OF ENSURING CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT AND SAFER DRIVING BEHAVIOUR. THE DIVISION IS CURRENTLY EXPLORING WAYS OF BUILDING DRIVER TRAINING CAPABILITY INTERNALLY. To manage driver behaviour more closely, Imperial Retail Holdings (IRL), part of the Africa division, has installed advanced vehicle tracking and monitoring systems on its trucks. These devices bring significant benefits, including: > > Information on drivers currently on the road and the vehicles they are driving > > Information on driving violations and the area of occurrence > > Facilitating driver scoring > > Preventing trips by unauthorised drivers > > Tighter management control and enhanced security TRUCKING WELLNESS PROGRAMME Africa also participates in the Trucking Wellness programme, which was launched in 1999 and is an initiative of the National Bargaining Council for the Road Freight and Industry (NBCRFLI). It is a primary healthcare delivery programme dedicated to the wellness of those employed in the Road Freight and industry. The programme s aim is to create awareness of HIV/AIDS and sexually-transmitted illnesses (STIs) among long-distance truck drivers and commercial sex workers. Imperial contributes to seven wellness centres under the programme, at a cost of approximately R per annum in addition to a R12 million contribution towards the Trucking Wellness programme per annum, made as a proportion of its wage bill. To date, Trucking Wellness has provided healthcare education to long-distance truck drivers, sex workers and community members. All the services offered are voluntary and results are strictly confidential. All industry members testing positive for HIV are immediately referred into the NBCRFLI HIV treatment programme. 02

4 > I MPROVING SAFETY ROAD SAFETY 03 LOGISTICS INTERNATIONAL IN THE LOGISTICS INTERNATIONAL DIVISION, THE FOCUS ON SAFETY ALSO EXTENDS TO WELL-BEING AND OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH. OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY STANDARDS ARE STRICTLY REGULATED BY LAW AND THE UNDERLYING LEGISLATION IN THE DIVISION S AREAS OF OPERATION IS HIGHLY DEVELOPED. THE DIVISION THUS MEETS INTERNATIONALLY-ACKNOWLEDGED STANDARDS AND NORMS THROUGH ITS INTERNAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS. All accidents and incidents are evaluated, whether or not they result in injuries. Suspected or confirmed cases of occupational disease are investigated, as well as any other situation which may be a potential risk to employees. A project to manage occupational health and safety in the barge and pushboat fleet was implemented during the year. The project aimed to reduce the total number of accidents and lost days due to accidents, two key safety metrics for the business. Focus areas were the prevention of accidents and the improvement of metrics relating to work-related and nonwork-related illnesses. Actions under the project included: >> Crew education, both shoreside and on board >> On-board tool box talks, in particular relating to tasks identified as carrying a high risk >> Analysis of occupational accidents on all barges >> Improved communication with the barges crews to maintain awareness of key risks In addition, welcome back interviews were implemented to minimise lost days due to illnesses. After long-term illnesses, employees are invited to an open discussion about work-related factors contributing to their absence, thus enabling employee feedback to be gained on measures to make the working environment more employee-friendly. Occupational health and safety checks of all barges are undertaken by certified experts to identify weak points that need to be rectified, as well as elements of good practice that can be shared across the fleet. As a result of the measures implemented, the shipping business unit in the International division has been successful in reducing sick leave from the average level of approximately 10% experienced from 2009 to 2013, to 4% in the calendar year 2014 and 5,12% in the first four months of During the financial year under review, the Road Transport division of the International division established a partnership with UCON, an environmental management consulting company, to ensure that legal requirements for authority management are met and to identify opportunities for establishing even higher environmental and safety standards. Areas covered include licences and approvals, plant safety and water protection. The division s safety efforts were recognised during the financial year by ExxonMobil, which presented Lehnkering with its Safety Health and Environment Award for its successful safety strategy.
