3 Accurate Drying Results For Quality Flavor Creations SmartCal means efficient quality control: The recently developed Reference Substance SmartCal verifies the measuring performance of METTLER TOLEDO Moisture Analyzers within the shortest time. Givaudan, the Swiss flavor and fragrance company, was among the first to evaluate this innovative quality control solution at its production site near Zurich, Switzerland. Valid moisture analyzers for true results Givaudan develops flavor creations for food markets around the world and is a leader in the flavor industry. Whether sweet or savory, many of them come in form of powders with a moisture content between 2 and 7%, which is analyzed during production with the HG63 Halogen Moisture Analyzers from METTLER TOLEDO. Moisture analyzer performance monitoring is essential in order to ensure valid results. At Givaudan, consistent results, after analyzing the same sample on all of the four HG63s, indicate that the moisture analyzers are working correctly. Occasional heating temperature monitoring completes the instrument control. Conventional calibration procedures, however, are rarely performed, as they are time consuming and laborious. In this case, Dominic Mathies, laboratory head at Givaudan, welcomes the SmartCal solution, It is fast, simple and gives us the reassurance of having our instruments under control. 10 minutes to verify instrument performance SmartCal is a reference substance releasing a defined amount of moisture depending on the drying temperature selected. The reference substance test is performed in very similar conditions as with flavor analysis and is just as simple. During heating at 100 C, the test substance must lose a specified amount of moisture. If the result displayed after 10 minutes is within the control limits, the moisture analyzer is confirmed to be functioning properly. A test frequency of once per month is appropriate for Givaudan s quality requirements and ensures valid results. Its activities include the selection of seeds, formulation and the manufacturing of raw materials and finished cosmetic products. Mrs. Gomez is quality control lab manager of the production site located at Fontenay-sur-Eure, France. Alban Muller started his pioneering business in Montreuil in He founded a small company manufacturing vegetal extracts for the cosmetics industry with his wife. More than thirty years later, it still has the feel of a family business, but has expanded into a group with a presence in more than 50 countries. From seed to finished product The group has 3 sites in France and is renowned for its expertise in the beauty and phytotherapy fields. Mr. Muller, chairman of Cosmetics Valley from 2005 to 2011, has always insisted on steering his group according to principles combining ecoresponsibility and quality. Therefore, production has deliberately been located in France. The recent awarding of ISO certification (version 2007), guaranteeing Good Manufacturing Practice in the production of finished cosmetic products, is also proof of this commitment. The site at Fontenay-sur-Eure, home to both the head office and production, is no exception. Estelle Gomez, quality control laboratory manager, explains, "Selection of raw materials is critical. Our main sup- 4

5 plier of fresh plants is based in the region so every sample offered can be assessed by someone from our dedicated laboratory team". She adds, "We offer our customers a complete range of finished products and natural plant-based extracts. Our offer consists of around 300 plants, 50% of which come from the area surrounding the factory." The QC laboratory's activities have grown significantly since 2002, including a five times increase in the lab surface area and expanded premises. Mrs. Gomez now has a team of 7 people making all the necessary checks, such as ph, HPLC, dosing with heavy metals and microbiological analysis, etc. An all-in-one solution "We have been using a glass pycnometer and an old refractometer for a long time," explains Mrs. Gomez. "The refractometer broke down, which means we are dependent on our colleagues at the R&D laboratory in Montreuil to take measurements.
