4 Fish traceability in Europe GS1 Fish Traceability in Europe Guideline 2015 Produced in response to recent EU legislation - EU 1224/ establishing a Community control system for ensuring compliance with the rules of the common fisheries policy - EU 404/ laying down detailed rules for the implementation of Council Regulation (EC) No 1224/2009 establishing a Community control system for ensuring compliance with the rules of the Common Fisheries Policy - EU 1379/ on the common organisation of the markets in fishery and aquaculture products 4

5 For example: EU 404/2011 Article 67, section 8 Member States shall cooperate with each other to ensure that the information affixed to the lot and/or accompanying physically the lot can be accessed by the competent authorities of another Member State than the one where the fisheries or aquaculture products have been put into the lot, in particular when the information is affixed to the lot by way of an identification tool such as a code, barcode, an electronic chip or a similar device. Operators using such tools shall ensure that they are developed on the basis of internationally recognised standards and specifications. 5

7 What is e-locate? Sea Fisheries Protection Authority (SFPA) Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM) and GS1 Ireland (GS1)...have initiated a project to assess international best practice in the use of weighing, labelling and traceability technology, to identify the needs of the Irish fish industry and to provide resources to facilitate the adoption of these standards at all levels in Ireland... This project has been named e-locate 7

8 National Traceability Framework GS1 Ireland; Have a central role in influencing the development of a GS1 Standards Based National Traceability Framework Are involved in the drawing up the approval criteria and subsequent auditing of companies to ensure that they meet those criteria Are developing a national training programme for the fish industry to ensure that all parties and stakeholders are aware of the e-locate framework, and to ensure its adoption throughout the industry in Ireland Provide professional advice to the fish industry
