The MSC offers a contributory pension scheme (employer s contribution 9%, employee s contribution 6%) and a Death in Service insurance benefit equal to four times annual salary. Employees are entitled to join Tier 2 of the pension scheme on satisfactory completion of their probation period. 35 / 40 hours a week, depending on location with one hour unpaid for lunch. The MSC supports flexible working, so the pattern of hours may vary according to operational and personal needs. The MSC works across different time zones and the post holder may be required to undertake periodic international travel. No overtime is payable, however, under certain circumstances time off in lieu may be granted if prior approval has been obtained. Permanent contract with a notice period of three months in writing on either side. There is a probationary period of six months. 25 days per annum, or prorated equivalent, plus statutory holidays. There is a discretionary carry-over entitlement of five days per annum (or prorated equivalent). The MSC strives to be an equal opportunities employer and commitment to this process is expected. 2 A. JOB SUMMARY: Reporting to the Senior, the candidate will have key organisational responsibility in contributing to the development and credibility of the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), the world s leading sustainable seafood ecolabelling programme. The candidate will help to manage and direct the MSC s Chain of Custody (CoC) programme, including the implementation and evaluation of traceability policies and procedures. The CoC standard is the MSC s traceability standard, which helps to ensure that products sold or labelled with the MSC ecolabel originated from a certified fishery; the MSC is also responsible for the CoC of the Aquaculture Stewardship Council. There are currently around 4000 CoC certificates around the world, and the programme continues to grow. As a 3 rd party standard setter, the MSC does not carry out CoC audits directly, but relies on a network of 25 accredited certification bodies and over 400 auditors globally to certify supply chain companies. The CoC team is responsible for ongoing oversight and strategic development of the CoC standard, as well as carrying out additional supply chain monitoring and testing (such as our DNA testing programme). This is an enthusiastic, dedicated, and supportive team with global presence, and an impact that helps to shape traceability standards across the broader seafood industry. The successful candidate will manage and support on numerous aspects of the CoC programme, including policy development, relationship management with Conformity Assessment Bodies (CABs), clients and other stakeholders, quality assurance of the CoC program and incident management. The post holder will also be responsible for a varied set of projects that may include risk management, development of electronic auditing tools, program monitoring and product authentication, digital traceability, traceability at sea and regional stakeholder engagement (in particular UK and Ireland or US). Up to 10% of the role may include travel, including internationally. B. RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE ROLE (Key Results and Outcomes) The work of the is linked to the MSC s overarching objectives: 1. Ensuring the credibility of the MSC helping maintain and build credibility and support for the MSC programme with a wide range of stakeholders. Ensuring the CoC programme is rigorous, commercially relevant, cost effective and credible and producing high quality, consistent results that demonstrate continuous improvement. 2. Getting certified products to market - ensuring the relevance, accessibility and cost-effectiveness of the MSC CoC programme at a global level to the broadest range of members of the supply chain, including independent operators, and developing country companies. 3. Maintaining and building strategic relationships with the MSC s stakeholders - ensuring good relationships with all stakeholders and drawing on expertise offered by the MSC s governing bodies. Implementing a strategic and inclusive approach to maintaining and building relationships with a broader spectrum of MSC s stakeholders in the policy setting process. 4. Maintaining quality internal systems and processes ensuring internal standards setting and certification systems and methodologies meet relevant international standards and/or codes of practice and are implemented consistently across the organisation. Ensure excellent data handling of CoC information. The post holder will perform the following functions either directly or through coordination with internal teams (exact responsibilities are dependent on expertise of the post holder and other team members): : Page 2 of 6
3 Monitor programme effectiveness: Regularly and objectively evaluate the performance of the MSC s CoC certification programme, especially with respect to the clarity of requirements for CoC clients. Identify key areas of integrity risk across the different types and geographies of MSC supply chains. Take responsibility for oversight of the CoC certification programme in a specific geographic region. Policy development: Contribute to the development and implementation of new policies and procedures, particularly in support of the MSC s governing bodies decision-making processes; including the preparation of papers presenting the justification for proposed policy changes or new initiatives. Ensure that internal CoC programme activities occur with a collaborative team approach and open communication style, identifying and effectively resolving areas of differing views, including involvement of others as appropriate. Incident management: Manage the processes, protocols and responses to any incidents and product integrity risks in the MSC and ASC supply chains. Manage the QMS, horizon scanning, escalation processes and leading investigations. Project management: Manage strategic, multi-stakeholder projects in an effective, proactive, and detail-oriented manner; example projects may include advancement of a risk-based monitoring approach, developing electronic traceability tools, or leading the product authentication program (including DNA and antibiotics testing). Organise consultations with stakeholders in the region to provide input on the different projects in the CoC team; consultation may involve online outreach, webinars, in person events and one-on-one outreach. Training, capacity building and stakeholder engagement: Contribute to the development and delivery of technical training and capacity building programmes in relation to the MSC CoC standards and methodologies for internal and external audiences, particularly auditors and MSC staff in regional offices. Engage stakeholders in policy development. Report writing: Produce clear, high quality written and verbal reports, briefings, submissions and other outputs. C. PERSON SPECIFICATION The ideal candidate will have experience working with food supply chains, certification bodies, ecolabelling initiatives, or other supply chain traceability projects. Experience in the seafood sector and prior knowledge of the MSC programme is highly desirable. Technical Skills and Experience Relevant Bachelor or Master s degree or equivalent in a relevant field; extensive experience could be used to supplement educational requirements. : Page 3 of 6
4 Ability to demonstrate in-depth and practical understanding of global supply chains, certification systems, and/or key issues related to traceability systems (for example, in areas such as food safety, legal requirements both nationally and internationally, fraud deterrence, product tracking, electronic traceability systems). Excellent computer and IT skills, including confident use of MS Office products (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and Adobe Acrobat are essential. The ideal candidate will have skills / experience in at least two of the areas below: Knowledge of food supply chain industry traceability standards and certification requirements. Knowledge of supply chain traceability systems or standards, particularly electronic traceability systems. Experience with traceability requirements at sea, at landing and at auctions. Experience with supply chain auditing, internal auditing and a lead auditor qualification, quality assurance, risk management or compliance. Experience managing the development or implementation of technology projects related to supply chains or auditing. Knowledge of product authentication methods, including DNA, antibiotics or isotope testing, or other promising technologies for seafood authentication. Demonstrable knowledge of food safety or quality systems management, product or supply chain risk assessment, traceability systems and relevant national and international laws relating to product labelling, and traceability. Direct experience working in seafood or food supply chains. Stakeholder-Oriented Demonstrable experience working with stakeholder engagement in supply chains, fisheries, governments, science and / or engos. Evidence of an ability to successfully develop and manage relationships with colleagues at all levels, stakeholders and collaborators, with a people-centred approach to business and work essential. Management, Organisational Demonstrable proactive approach to work planning and problem solving Excellent project planning and management, personal organisation and time management skills, demonstrating an ability to manage competing workloads A successful record of strategic thinking, project development and management Direct line management experience desirable as the post holder may be responsible for one direct report Versatility to combine self-management and self-support when working alone with productive team membership.
