1 LGC Guidance Notes for Sheep and Goat Abattoirs This document contains useful information and reminders for sheep and goat fallen stock brainstem samplers All forms and documents mentioned or attached in the appendices will be either sent to you or be available Overview of services provided: LGC will provide the following: o supply of necessary consumable items to approved abattoirs o BSE Customer Care Team: o Testing of samples Transport, sample notification and consumable request forms All forms are obtainable from the LGC website

2 Consumable items Please do not over order consumable items. Ordering All ordering must be linked to the throughput of the site. All orders will now be sent to LGC s BSE Customer Care Team. LGC will adjust all orders as they feel appropriate on the basis of known throughput of the site and the known levels of consumables previously ordered. Forms Will be ordered via the consumable order forms shown Appendix 2 Packaging There will be three packaging sorts available Small Bio Box (up to 6 samples) Medium Bio box (up to 20 samples) Large Bio box (up to 40 samples) Please see Appendix 4 for sample packaging guide Spoons Disposable plastic spoons must be used for all fallen stock. Metal spoons, air or water extraction methods can not be used. Spoons should not break if used correctly please apply minimal pressure. Although LGC will normally supply blue spoons to sites, others can be supplied from time to time. Pots A common cause of complaints from the testing laboratory is if the tops of pots have not been screwed on correctly. This can lead to leakage during transit making the packaging difficult to handle: contaminated packaging has to be sent for specialist burning rather than being recycled. Forceps A pair of forceps is provided for each head as with spoons these must be treated as clinical waste

3 Despatch of samples LGC will be responsible for the costs of transport of samples. The LGC courier will be Topspeed The sampling site is responsible for having the sample box packed correctly and ready for despatch. A transport request must be sent if the site requires a pick-up. If the site requires a same day pick-up they must send this request before mid day. Once samples have been despatched, sites should inform LGC s BSE Customer Care Team by Faxing a Notification of Samples Sent form on the same day Further information Any queries should be directed through LGC s BSE Customer Care Team
