1 Iotron Sterilization Equipment Sterilization Through Irradiation The Richmond Beekeepers Association is facilitating an equipment sterilization effort that involves the use of Iotron s electron beam irradiation system. The process has been shown to have a high degree of success in eliminating diseases in the hive. Please read below for more information about the process and details to participate in the RBA group treatment organized for early spring. Electron beam Irradiation of honeybee equipment destroys the pathogens responsible for many bee diseases, resulting in increased colony health, improved productivity, savings on drugs costs as well as equipment and comb replacement costs. Widespread, routine use of electronic beam irradiation has the potential to increase health of the industry as a whole. This does not involve the use of radioisotopes, but rather concentrated electricity. Iotron Sterilization FAQ Sheet Our local service provider is Iotron Industries. V3C 6L RBA Group Iotron Treatment This year we have collaborated with the Langley and Maple Ridge bee clubs to do 2 Iotron runs in the spring. With 3 clubs involved it will be easier to meet Iotron s minimum equipment requirement. This spring there will be one run in February and one in March. Payment You must pay at the club level, in full, in advance of the treatment. Iotron will accept only 1 payment for our group; they do not want to deal with payments from individual beekeepers. Please disregard the instructions on the Iotron Sterilization Equipment Form that says you have to pay when you pick up your equipment. When you drop your equipment off at Iotron, they will ask that you have the Iotron Sterilization Equipment Form completed. RBA prepares a list to give to Iotron of members names and their equipment for that run. Only if your name is on the list can you drop your equipment off at Iotron. Iotron will confirm you are on the RBA list, ensure you have provided your contact information and reconcile our list of equipment with what you drop off. Ensure what Iotron has recorded for you for equipment dropped off is accurate because it is based on this information we will be billed. In case of dispute we will rely on Iotron s Information. Equipment Preparation and Instructions Supers (with or without frames) Supers may contain frames but best results are achieved if frames do not contain honey or honey is minimized. If there are not enough frames to fill the super, add frames so there is minimal movement when bagged and taped. Supers must be wrapped in plastic bags, preferably overbagged to prevent honey leaks and re-contamination, and secured with duct tape on the top, bottom and sides to secure the frames. Each bag must be labeled with both your name and that of the Richmond Beekeepers Association (RBA). It s also good to add the number of the packages you are submitting, for example: Darlene RBA 4 of 15. I add a teaspoon of wax moth crystals to any package with bees wax just in case there is a delay in treatment or unwrapping it after it s processed. 3 Frames (with or without honey) Two (2) frames per bundle and must be wrapped in a plastic bag and taped securely, edges sealed to prevent leakage. Must be labeled with both your name and that of the RBA. $1.80 per pack (tax included) Bottom Boards Should be delivered as single pieces only and do not need to be wrapped in plastic. They must be free of debris and clearly and securely labeled with your name and that of the RBA. 5 APICULTURE INDUSTRY ELECTRON BEAM STERILIZATION PROGRAM WHY STERILIZE? At present, the Apiculture Industry is facing several threats from pathogenic organisms. Decreased Honeybee health has a direct impact on the productivity of pollination and honey production, robbing from hive revenue targets. Colony collapse and expenses associated with replacement of package Bees and Queens are also incurred. Other costs include increased use of drug treatments, replacement of diseased equipment and the investment of Bees in the building of new comb. Irradiation of Honeybee equipment destroys the pathogens responsible for many Bee diseases (e.g. American foulbrood, Chalkbrood, Nosema). The resulting increased colony health improves productivity, provides savings on drug costs as well as equipment and comb replacement costs and allows the Beekeeper increased assurance that revenue targets will be met. With new markets opening to residue-free honey, irradiation provides an opportunity to reduce drug treatment in the Beekeeper s IPM program. Widespread, routine use of electron beam irradiation not only controls disease, improves productivity and saves costs but has the potential to increase the health of the industry as a whole. PROGRAM DETAILS: EQUIPMENT DESCRIPTION ORDER SIZE PRICE SUPERS Less than a full truckload Note: Supers may contain frames but best (84 supers minimum; less than 1404 supers) $5.00/super results achieved if frames do not contain More than a full truckload honey or honey is minimized. (1404 supers or more) $4.50/super ORGANIZATION: The lowest cost is obtained by achieving the largest order size. Some details are described below but if you have any questions please contact Iotron. ACTIVITY PARTNER DETAILS Beekeepers can partner to achieve the largest load and often organize such that equipment accumulates at one partner s site and ships once a full load is achieved. It s good to keep track of each partner s quantities and consider labeling, to prevent mixing of partner s equipment (e.g. different color garbage bags; box markings; separate pallets). SHIPMENT We have obtained trucking and rail quotations for various locations. Please call to determine the best option ( ). (Note: full loads are most efficient) PALLET LOADING Often full pallets have 9 rows of 6 boxes (54 boxes/pallet). If the trailer height allows, it is ideal for Iotron if a second pallet can be interspaced between the 5 th and 6 th row of boxes in the stack. This allows a tall pallet to be split into two shorter pallets for easier handling.

6 BAGGING Supers should be over-bagged to prevent honey leaks and recontamination. Large garbage bags are ideal. Bands of tape should be wrapped around the super, to secure the frames in place, as supers are flipped over during the irradiation process. BOXING Boxing is optional but Great Little Box Company ( ) can produce boxes to fit a super (51X43x27cm). Box manufacturers tend to lower the unit price as the quantity ordered increases, so it would be worthwhile to partner when ordering. Note: supers should be bagged prior to boxing, as described above. Boxes may be reused ROUTINE CONTROL OTHER ROUTINE DETAILS: in future years if maintained in good condition. Consider color coding frames to indicate the year irradiated, in order to keep track of equipment. (e.g. similar to code for Queen Bee) DESCRIPTION OF PACKAGING REQUIRED FOR APICULTURE EQUIPMENT/SUPPLIES: Equipment & Supplies: Honey Supers, Frames, Misc. equipment, Pollen, Honey Packaging: (in general, the purpose is to prevent honey leaks and prevent recontamination) - Supers may be wrapped in garbage bags, open edges sealed with tape and entire box taped around in order to secure frames in position. Cardboard boxes may be used in addition. Frames should be as clean as possible. - Honey Containing Frames may be double stacked, wrapped in garbage bags or boxes and edges sealed. - Misc. Equipment will require a call to Iotron to determine the best orientation and packaging. - Pollen & Honey may be packed in a variety of configurations. Please call Iotron for options. LOGISTICS: Please call Iotron for solutions to improve cost effectiveness. For example, shipping full trailer loads is better than partial loads. Partnering with others increases the order size and also provides a cost effective solution. TURNAROUND: If fast turnaround time is required, scheduling an appointment will allow immediate treatment, while you wait, for same day pick up. Our regular turnaround time, without scheduling, is approximately 3 business days or less.
