16 IMU-CET Gateway To Maritime Education 1 Why Merchant Navy Merchant Navy (or Merchant Marine) refers to the merchant fleet of a country, which varies in capacity. Seafarers on merchant vessels, who hold various military-like ranks and responsibilities and are sometimes members of various maritime trade unions, are required by the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watch keeping for Seafarers to carry Merchant Mariner's Documents. The following is a partial list of the merchant navies or merchant marines of various countries. It is a rewarding and adventurous opportunity for anyone who loves traveling and adventure. The Merchant navy career options mainly include the following category: 1. Navigating Officers (Deck side Officers) 2. Marine Engineering Officers (Engine side Officers) 3. Crew Members (To assist the Officers) 4. Specialized Officers (Electrical Officer, Radio Officers) Shipping companies offer these positions on contracts for a period of 6 to 9 months. After finishing the contract period, the officers can enjoy leave & whenever they want to join back, the company will absorb them immediately. Presently the demand for Marine Engineers & Deck officers is high worldwide. The shipping companies are facing great shortage for the Deck & Engine officers. Hence the trained persons are getting immediate job opportunities all over the world. NAVIGATING OFFICERS TEAM They are responsible for the navigation of the Ship, the loading / discharge of cargo, radio communication and the control / safety of the crew, and passengers. The chief navigator of the ship is the 3

He exercises complete control over the officers, crew and any passengers on board the ship. Trainee Cadets ENGINEER OFFICERS TEAM The ship's engineers have complete responsibility of the ship's engine room i.e., the main engine, boilers, pumps, hydraulic fuel systems the ship's electrical generating plant and distribution system. Fourth Engineer 5. Junior Engineering Cadets CREW TEAM The GP crew involve with all kind of day to day activities to assist either to Chief Officers in Deck side or second Engineer in Engine side. One can get Promotion from GP crew position to Captain Level or Chief Engineer level with proper exams and sea experience. The catering crew will perform the food preparation and kitchen activities. The recent boom in the global economy has driven the sea freight market high and the order books of most of the world's shipyards are full through the next 5 years. There are 70,000 ships plying across the oceans, and numbers are expected to increase very fast. Each ship requires a Captain and three navigating officers. With the growing demand for new ships, there is expected to be a shortage of officers globally. The commercial purpose of the fleet offers lucrative openings for engineers and navigators and catering & hospitality staff worldwide. Among all developing countries, India ranks as one of the countries having the largest merchant shipping fleets. Therefore, there is enough scope for employment in Indian as well as foreign ships. On successful completion of training at pre-sea and post-sea training institutes the candidates are eligible to take up jobs on board Indian/foreign vessels. Merchant vessels are ships that are primarily used either for carrying cargo or passengers. Basically, the ships that are engaged in active commercial transportation fall in this category. The navy ships or pleasure craft that don t charge passengers are excluded from the category of merchant vessels. Merchant vessels come in different sizes and shapes. It can be as small as a 6 m (20 ft.) long diving boat, or as big as ultra large crude carriers (ULCC) that can be up to 415 m (1,361 ft.) long. They are the main tool of ocean transportation, carrying crude oil and goods throughout the world, in varied sizes of tankers, containers and bulk carriers. Almost all countries in the world possess and operate merchant ships. Currently, the Greek merchant fleet is the largest in the world accounting for over 16% of the world s total tonnage. ***** 5

19 IMU-CET Gateway To Maritime Education 2 Types of Merchant Vessels Merchant vessels can be divided into different categories according to their size and purpose. Dry Cargo Ships Dry cargo ship is a term generally used for bulk carriers and container ships. While bulk carriers are used in the transportation of bulk cargo such as grains, coal, ores and cement, container ships are normally used for carrying miscellaneous goods. Bulk carriers: As the name suggests, a bulk carrier is primarily used in carrying unpackaged bulk cargo items including grains, ores, cement and other similar cargo. They comprise of 40% of the merchant fleets in the world. They can be categorized in six major categories according to their size. The categories include Small, Handy size, Handy max, Panamax, Capesize and Very Large. Their size can range from a small mini-bulker to giant ships with a capacity of 400,000 dead weight tonnage (DWT). South Korea is the largest builder of bulk carriers in the world. 6

20 IMU-CET Gateway To Maritime Education Bulk Carrier CONTAINER SHIPS Container ships are ocean vessels that carry goods in large containers, a technique called containerization. They can be divided into several categories according to their size. Main categories of container ships include such as feeder, feedermax, Panamax, new Panamax, and ultra large. They play a dominant role in international trade. 7

21 IMU-CET Gateway To Maritime Education Container Ship TANKERS Tankers are used for transporting crude oil, finished petroleum products, liquefied natural gas (LNG), chemicals and other liquids in bulk. They play an important role in international trade with a share of over 33% of the world tonnage. Tankers come in varied sizes ranging from handy size tankers to ultra large crude carriers (ULCC) with a size ranging between 320,000 to 500,000 DWT. 8
