4 Keynotes Keith Harrison-Broninski: The Future of BPM BPMS technology is now mainstream yet few knowledge workers (175 million in US and Europe) use it. Why is the BPMS restricted to routine work processing orders, arranging deliveries, payment settlement, and returns handling? What is preventing BPMS usage for product research, project management, market development, sales support, problem solving, organizational improvement, and business growth? Routine work is merely the tip of the organizational iceberg. It is knowledge work that drives competitive success, so we need to answer this question. To see what is holding back the BPMS, we need to take a very high-level look at enterprise computing. The two main developments in the 20th century were the automation of predictable activity sequences, and the use of databases to capture real-world information. In this century, we will see the next main development software that helps people carry out unpredictable processes. In his keynote speech, Keith Harrison-Broninski will explain how, powered by SOA, the Human Interaction Management System (HIMS) finally brings to life Smith and Fingar s dream of extinguishing the task-based organization of work the fragmentation of human endeavour into its simplest components - and replacing it by the supremacy of the business process. Keith Harrison-Broninski is a researcher, writer, keynote speaker, software architect and consultant working at the forefront of the IT and business worlds. Keith is author of the landmark book, Human Interactions: The Heart And Soul Of Business Process Management (Meghan-Kiffer Press, 2005). Keith is also a contributing thought leader to In Search Of BPM Excellence (Meghan-Kiffer Press, 2005) and to the forthcoming International Handbook of BPM (Springer, to be published in 2009). He also writes a regular column for bptrends.com and a popular blog for ebizq.net, IT Directions which covers next steps in IT and business. Andrew Watson: Achieving Business Agility through SOA and BPM Service-Oriented Architecture is certainly this year s business computing buzz-phrase. But what does it really mean, and how can it help build agile, adaptable IT systems that serve the needs of the business? OMG s architects have been using SOA for more than a decade, so are well placed to answer this question. This talk will explain how SOA provides the foundation for building flexible business software, but shows that Business Process Modelling (BPM) tools are the key to realising SOA's full promise. Andrew Watson is the Vice President and Technical Director of Object Management Group (OMG). Andrew has overall responsibility for OMG s technology adoption process, and also chairs the Architecture Board, the group of distinguished technical contributors from OMG member organizations which oversees the technical consistency of OMG s specifications. From 1992 to 1996 he also chaired the OMG s Object Request Broker Task Force, which was responsible for the development and deployment of the CORBA 2 specification. Previously Andrew spent six years with the ANSA core team in Cambridge researching distributed object architectures, specialising in distributed object type systems.
5 Ken Rubin: Challenges and Impacts of SOA on Healthcare Enterprise Architecture Within the healthcare community, enterprise architecture is just beginning to transition from being used exclusively by early-adopter organizations and finding its way into the mainstream. Similarly, serviceoriented architecture is increasingly receiving attention as an approach of interest and potential viability to improve healthcare delivery, business-it alignment, and health IT efficacy. While the impacts of SOA are not self-evident within an EA, the resulting programmatic changes can be profound, affecting the nature and role of business community engagement, the core architecture development, governance and oversight, and realization of the architecture within the organization. This session will explore the particular challenges of Enterprise Architecture (EA) faced by healthcare institutions, and discuss and determine the impacts of service-oriented architecture on those programmes. Additionally, this session will discuss existing and emerging standards work that colors EA activities, highlighting how these available industry assets can be leveraged to jump-start and strengthen SOA-aligned EA activities. Ken Rubin is the Chief Healthcare Architect for the [US] Federal Healthcare Porfolio for EDS, an HP Company. Primarily focused on healthcare enterprise architecture, informatics, and electronic health record interoperability, Mr. Rubin co-chairs and founded the HL7 Service-oriented Architecture Workgroup, co-chairs the OMG Healthcare Domain Task Force, and established the Healthcare Services Specification Project (HSSP) a collaboration between standards bodies to produce health industry SOA standards. Mr. Rubin serves as the Enterprise Architect for Open Health Tools, an open-source healthcare development community. Mr. Rubin lives with his wife in Bowie, Maryland, a suburb of Washington, DC. Partners The event is supported by the following organizations:
