CHAPTER 1: WHAT IS A NICHE MARKET? Over the years, Internet marketing has become much more competitive. It seems every online business has a website that is aimed at selling information or products to those who visit. These websites usually include a list of products, product descriptions, ebooks, newsletters, articles, and other content for consumers to read and decide if the products meet their needs. As competition has increased, Internet marketing tactics have also changed. Search engines allow businesses to purchase ad space, which helps increase their web rank. Online businesses must also be concerned with using keywords on their websites in order to further influence web rank in the hopes they rank high enough on search engine lists so consumers will visit the site. But what if there was a way for you to succeed in running an online business without having to worry about web rank or choosing the right keywords for your website? What if you could sell multiple products throughout the year and earn enough to work from home full-time? 6

If you are looking for this type of Internet business, then niche marketing is the answer. By targeting your audience first instead of creating a website and uploading products, you will be able to determine in advance how profitable a product will be before you even decide what to sell! NICHE MARKET BASICS It is important to keep in mind that if you decide to pursue niche markets, you will have to put in the time to research possible markets to determine which ones will yield the most profits. No two markets are the same, so your potential income will vary. In simple terms, a niche market is a small group of consumers who are interested in hobbies, sports, games, music, and other pastimes that may or may not be considered mainstream. A good example is a hobby such as gardening. While there are many people who garden, there are those who are more interested in certain types of flowers or vegetable gardening. When searching for a niche market within the gardening community, you will have to conduct research and find out more about gardening and types of gardening to see if there 7

are any areas that are not catered to online, but are sought after by a group that is large enough to be profitable. A good niche market contains the following attributes: It has enough people who are willing to spend money to get the information they need Its not overrun by too many other businesses trying to cater to the group at the same time The Market Group contains enough people who will sign up for additional information about your services Its trendy, but not too trendy, (A trendy niche market will be around for at least six months) While a niche market doesn t have to contain all of these attributes for you to be successful in selling a product appropriate for that group, it should be a group that is hungry for information, but is not finding this information in too many places online. WHERE TO FIND NICHE MARKETS The best place to find niche markets is to begin by looking for general markets that are popular. Since many people enjoy 8

gardening, you could start your research by looking up how many gardening books there are on websites like Amazon.com or BarnesandNoble.com. You will probably find thousands of result pages. This means you are on the right track and the next step is to narrow down your search. By continually narrowing your search, you will begin to find smaller markets and eventually niche markets. There is a danger of becoming too narrow and finding groups that are not large enough to profit from, so be sure that you find groups that are small, but growing in popularity or who have a steady level of participants. You can measure the popularity of a group by conducting web searches. Typical niche markets that are profitable usually have between 10,000 and 50,000 results on search engines. Any larger, and you may have more competition from other businesses. Any smaller, and their may not be as much interest in your product. After narrowing down possible niche markets in gardening, you may have come up with rose gardens, which can be narrowed down to specific types of roses used in rose gardens. Your niche may be groups that enjoy planting specific types of roses and who need more information on how to do this in different types of soil, climates, and other conditions. 9

Incidentally, along the way, you may also discover the types of products you can sell to these niche markets. A gardening ebook about a specific type of rose could be very profitable as long as you sell it to the right groups of people. Other places to find niche markets include: Newspapers, magazines, trade publications, ezines, newsletters, blogs Advertisement and classified ad sections in newspapers and magazines Online classified ad sites like Craigslist.com Online auction sites like ebay Bookstores, online book dealers Retail stores Conversations with family and friends As you can see, generating ideas is the easy part. Conducting careful research to find specific niche markets takes the most time. But this is time well-spent because once you find a few niche markets; you can begin finding those interested in your product without having to compete with other businesses or with the Internet in general. BENEFITS OF CATERING TO SMALLER GROUPS Even though marketing logic suggests that selling products to a large group of people will yield more profits than selling to a 10

smaller group has been the driving force of many large corporations, you are a small business trying to compete with not only these large corporations, but other small businesses as well. Since large corporations for the most part do not view niche markets as profitable in the long run, you have the opportunity of catering to these groups without having to worry about the competition. Another benefit to finding niche markets and selling directly to them is that you will already be familiar to their needs. This makes creating a product, whether it is an ebook, report, ecourse, or step-by-step guides, and selling it much easier because you do not have to convince niche markets that they need your business they already know this because of the lack of information they have been able to find so far online. If you are the type of person who is easily bored by day to day tasks, being able to sell new products every few weeks or months to a different group will never become boring or old. Because of the research you to conduct, not only will you learn more about topics you might not have known existed, each day will bring different challenges. You should be disciplined however, in order to thoroughly research niche groups, create lists, correspond with customers, and create informative materials that they will want to purchase. 11

One final benefit is the ability to manage your own time. Working from home gives you more free time to enjoy hobbies, meet with friends, and set your own hours so you can work when you want. There is no greater joy than being able to run your own business, help fulfill the needs of those who are being ignored online, and being able to decide which niche markets to follow and which ones not to. GETTING STARTED The best way to get started is to create a list of topics that interest you. Being passionate and enjoying what you do will help you create products that are informative and helpful. Topics that are not of interest will become a burden and you may end up not following through. Do however keep an open mind to new interests. Create a List of Possible Markets After creating a list, visit google.com and conduct advanced searches. Find out which categories on your list are the most popular and try to narrow down it until you find smaller categories considered niche markets. Visit some of the websites that cater to these niche markets. Find out the following: 12

What do these websites have to offer? How popular are they? How often are they updated? Do these sites have an list or a newsletter? How long have these sites been up? What types of keywords are they using? This information will give you more insight into the popularity of the niche, if the niche has too much competition, and if the niche will be profitable. The next step is to compile a list of common keywords used to describe this niche. You can find them on the websites you visit or you can compile a list using free keyword search tools found on Yahoo.com or google.com or here: Q6uYAodnimlCg After entering in these keywords, take note of the advertisements that are featured on the search engine results page. If there are a lot of ads, then you know the keyword is competitive. This tells you that the market may be too saturated. Visit Yahoo.com and click on View Bids Tool. This tool will tell you big amounts that others are paying for the opportunity to post their ads on the search results page using particular keywords. 13

If the bids are low and there are a lot of companies using the keywords, then the click rate is usually low as well. This tells you that the niche market exists, but it may not be too profitable. Go through the rest of your list using the tools provided by Google and other search engines. Google Trends will give you valuable information about a topic from the past few months. You can check how popular the topic was, times during the week when it was more or less popular, and which countries it was the most popular if you want to extend your marketing efforts into the international arena. Generate Ideas for Products As you conduct your research, you should take note of possible product ideas and create a second list to make things easier later on. Once you have found your niche market, you will have to test it to see how well people respond. In Chapter 6, you will learn more about specific testing techniques to use in order to determine the types of products you should sell and also if there is enough interest from the market to be profitable. Depending on your strengths and what you are interested in creating, there are many possibilities for products. Common products include: 14

Ebooks White papers Picture guides Newsletter subscriptions Video & Video Tutorials Print materials Reference guides Memberships Advice and tips You will come across other ideas that are unique to your niche market during your research. When creating a product, keep in mind: Who your audience is Overall cost of producing a quality product How much you want to earn How long the niche market will be profitable If you feel this market will be around for a long time, you may want to break your product into two or three smaller products and offer them at different times during the year. This will sustain your income and allow you to be more creative if the market allows. 15

Now that you know more about what a niche market is and how to find them, your next step will be to learn more about why they are important to your business in the long term. While other Internet businesses fold after saturating the marketplace, your business can thrive because you will be constantly looking for new audiences/niches and creating new products for them to purchase. Because consumers are oftentimes fickle and unpredictable, selling products to those who need them now instead of to those who may need them someday is a sound investment in not only your business, but also your future. PROS AND CONS OF NICHE MARKETING Throughout this book, you will learn about many of the benefits of niche marketing and how you can successfully start your own niche marketing business. Understanding the pros and cons of niche marketing can make going into to it much easier and less stressful because you know what to expect for the most part. Below is a short list of pros and cons that can help you as you begin your first niche marketing project. 16

Pros Few start-up costs Research is easy to conduct You can fit research into your schedule No 'hard selling' required because you find a niche first before creating a product Informational product can be sold and sent online to customers Easy to market You can have several products out there at one time Endless niche possibilities Can easily be a part-time or full-time job Cons A little overwhelming at first Research can be time consuming until you create a routine for yourself Internet can be a daunting place filled with a lot of information 17

You probably don't know anyone who is in this line of work, so you may feel isolated Profits will differ from project to project Some niches will become unpopular faster than others As you can see, the pros definitely outweigh the cons. Because it may take some time for you to get used to finding niches and creating products that satisfy a need, try to remain patient throughout the process. Once you have used some of the tools mentioned in this book and others you discover on your own, you will find that niche marketing isn't that difficult at all. 18

CHAPTER 2: WHY IS FINDING A NICHE IMPORTANT? To be successful in online business, you don t have to rely solely on niche marketing. You can build a website, advertise, create a newsletter, and build a customer base that may generate years of income by catering to larger, general markets. Of course, you should sell a product that is useful to many different types of people. You will also have to continuously market your website, worry about web ranking, and find ways of attracting new customers. Niche marketing makes it easy to sell products by avoiding many of the marketing responsibilities, website maintenance, and other tasks that can overcome any business owner. In this chapter, you will learn more about the features of niche marketing and why finding niche markets is important when you want to sell specific products to those who need them. SHORT TERM SUCCESS VS. LONG TERM SUCCESS The Internet is a fickle place where customers come and go whenever they choose. They are the ones that are in control 19

when it comes to the overall success of your business. Before you jump into any Internet venture, consider what you want from it. Do you want short term success or long term success? Both require you to put in the time and effort to create a product, website, and marketing strategies. But the outcomes can be very different. Short Term Niche marketing falls into this category because smaller markets are usually not around forever. Niche marketing is successful because for the most part it is offering a trendy product that caters to those interested in the latest fads or ideas. It is not offering long term solutions to problems that have been plaguing people for centuries. Niche marketing supplies mostly informational products that satisfy an urgent need that is not being addressed in many places online or off. If a rare type of Orchid suddenly becomes popular due to a celebrity endorsement or an exciting presentation at a flower show draws lots of people, then you have found a niche market in which to cater to. You can create an ebook, report, or other type of informational materials to sell. And as this interest in this rare type of Orchid starts to fade, you will be well on your way to finding the next niche market. 20

This is true of any industry, event, hobby, or idea that does not become a mainstay in society. This is why niche marketing is such a lucrative online business because there are so many niche markets always coming available online. Long Term Long term marketing strategies are used to promote products that have more staying power. For example, common flowers that people find easy to grow or those that have special meaning when connected to holidays or celebrations are considered to have long term interest. While you can be very successful in this environment, keep in mind that you will encounter much more competition than when marketing to small groups. You will also have increased competition from large corporations that have more to spend on marketing than small businesses. If you are successful, you will be able to market one product for many years by making only small adjustments. For some, there is a certain level of security that comes with selling products that you know people already need. You don t have to decide which type of marketing you want to pursue right now. Take your time to look at each and 21

determine the pros and cons. This will help you make a better decision that suits your lifestyle and work ethic. MARKETING STRATEGY DIFFERENCES There are different marketing strategies to follow when selling a product to a general market and a niche market. While the goal remains the same to make a profit, you will have to use different tactics in order to entice and persuade customers to buy your product. When selling to a general market, you may not fully understand why they need your product. This can make marketing difficult because you may not know which benefits and features to highlight in order to generate more sales. While you can market your product on various websites, eventually you will have to determine which groups of people are the most interested in your product so you don t waste money advertising in the wrong places. When selling to a niche market, you already know what they are looking for because you created a product after finding out the market s need. This makes marketing much easier and less painful to your budget. Also, since you will probably sell informational products, they can be downloaded from the computer, which means you will not have to worry about packaging and shipping costs. 22

Another big difference is in the way you market your product. Because you will be testing your market when looking for the right niches, you will be compiling lists as you go filled with potential customers. After your product is complete, it will be very easy for you to create an campaign and start selling. With a general market, you will have to create a website or landing page to capture addresses and then create an campaign. WORKING WITHIN A NICHE MARKET One of the greatest advantages of working in smaller niche markets is that new ones are formed every day. You will always have an endless stream of possibilities when it comes to finding a new niche. Another advantage is that you don t have to come up with a product until after your research is done. By that point, you will probably know exactly what the market needs and you can develop a product or product that satisfies those needs. Other reasons to target niche markets include the following: 23

Products usually don t cost much to create and upload. If selling an ebook, the time you take to research and develop, or the cost for hiring a ghostwriter are the only upfront costs. You can sell products to more than one niche at a time. For those who enjoy working on more than project at a time, niche marketing is a great way to juggle a few at a time. Niche markets lead to other niche markets and sub niches that can also be very profitable. Competition is almost non-existent if you have done your research and found markets that are not being catered to. The overall cost of running your business is little. You will need a computer with Internet access, website, product to sell, and a budget for PPC advertising, freelance writing expenses, and other marketing costs. Selling products to niche markets does not require that you be an expert in any field as long as you can provide useful information that people are willing to purchase. 24

If you enjoy learning about new topics, then niche marketing will always keep your thirst for knowledge satisfied. As you can see, there are many reasons why niche marketing appeals to those who want to run an Internet business and why you should find out more information. WHY RESEARCHING A NICHE IS IMPORTANT As discussed in Chapter 1, it is only after research and analyzing possible niche markets that a profitable one will surface. But why is this preparation and research so important when there are plenty of niche markets to be found online? When researching a niche, you should look for: Size of group Competition Types of products needed Interest in these products Only after you have answered these questions will you be able to determine if a niche will be profitable or not. 25

Size of Group The size of the niche market matters because if the group is too small, it will not generate enough profit. While niche markets are smaller than other markets, they still need to be large enough so you can sell your product and earn a profit. Competition If a niche market is being catered to by one or two other businesses, then chances are the group will not be as interested in what you have to sell because they may have bought it already or they don t have a need for more products. Types of Products Needed If the needs are too specific, you may not be able to meet them. Finding out which products are needed by visiting blogs, creating an list and sending out surveys can help you determine the types of products are most needed and therefore will be the most profitable. Interest in these Products There should be a fair amount of interest in informational products by the group so you can make a profit. If not, then you may need to move on the next niche. 26

In your business, you want to be as successful as possible. This means catering to groups that will hopefully generate the most profit. Some niches will be more profitable than others. Throughout this book, you will learn tips and techniques that will prepare you for finding and researching niches, but in the end, the amount you make will depend on consumer reaction, how badly they want what you have to offer, and amount of competition in the marketplace. Finding a niche market is essential if you want to sell products to small groups online. Once you have found a few niches that look promising, you can begin developing your product and prepare to sell it to those who have been looking for information about a particular topic for a long time. 27

CHAPTER 3: THE BENEFITS OF SELLING A NICHE PRODUCT Niche products can be fun to develop and sell, especially to those who have been already searching for them online. If you are not the salesperson type, being able to offer a product that basically sells itself is a much better option than trying to convince people to buy a product you probably wouldn t buy. There are several benefits to selling a niche product, some of which you have already read about or have considered for yourself as you read this book. But let s take a few minutes to outline these benefits so you will feel more comfortable about the idea of selling your products to others. BENEFITS OF SELLING A NICHE PRODUCT Benefits of selling a niche product to a smaller group of people online include the following: Filling a need online that has been neglected in the past 28

Providing a product to those who are already looking for it Endless amount of niche groups Low start-up cost Research, writing, and marketing requires less time than working a full-time job You can work whenever and wherever you please You can explore new topics at any time Endless income possibilities As you keep reading, you will discover even more benefits of niche marketing which will further your excitement and help you along the way when starting your own business. Filling an Online Need By creating products for those who are already looking for them online, you will be providing a valuable service that will generate many thanks from the community you market to. Because people have such diverse interests and hobbies, it is nearly impossible for medium and large businesses to meet the demands of customers. By marketing to smaller groups, you can provide these services and give people the information they have been searching for. Depending on your competition, you can make a solid income by selling one or two products to these groups. 29

Providing a Quality Product What makes niche marketing so special is that customers are already lining up to purchase your product even before you create it! Finding smaller markets online that is in need of your services will generate instant income. All you have to do is create a quality product and market it in the right places. In later chapters, you will learn more about where those in your niche market can be found online and how to appeal to them through advertising and creating a website. At this point, you may be thinking about possible products to sell. You may also be thinking that your writing skills aren t the greatest and you don t enjoy surfing the Internet. Well, once you have sold your first product and made some money from it, you will quickly begin to appreciate using the Internet and becoming a better writer. As well if you re willing to make the investment, you can hire a ghost writer at E-lance. You don t have to be the best writer in the world, by the way. If you are able to convey information in clear manner and include pictures, charts, and other images, then that s all you need. Depending on the topic, most informational products are not longer than fifteen or twenty pages. 30

Once you begin earning a steady income, you may be able to hire freelance writers to create products for you so more time can be spent on marketing and finding niches. Endless Supply of Niches As the Internet continues to expand, the need for information on various topics will also grow. Keep in mind that you will have times when one niche is more successful than another. Or, after careful research, you realize the niche will not be profitable, there are hundreds of others waiting to be discovered. Once you develop your own way of researching possible niche markets, use this method each time and you will find success. Use the tips mentioned in this book to get you started. While there may be a growing interest in niche marketing, many people approach it the wrong way by creating a product first and researching niche markets later. By finding your niche first and determining what its needs are, you can create a tailored product that is sure to sell quickly. Start-up Costs Are Low The cost of researching possible niches will not cost you much except a few hours of your time. While you may need to 31

spend some money on advertising, this cost will vary from niche to niche. But you will learn later in this book ways to market your product without having to bankrupt yourself in the process. Not Your Typical 8-Hour Job If you have ever dreamed of working from home and having more time to spend pursuing hobbies, enjoying time spent with family and friends, or just being able to sleep in late, then starting your own business is key. Once you find a niche and offer products, they will basically sell themselves. Because the Internet is open 24-hours a day, you can make money while you sleep. Another advantage of niche marketing is that you can create more than one product at a time and sell to several markets at once. This means continual income possibilities. There aren t too many jobs that can promise that! Even if you already have a full-time job, niche marketing is a perfect side business because of the limited amount of work required. Work on the weekends or in the evenings when you get home to earn some extra income. 32

Set Your Own Hours When selling products online, you don t have to worry about deadlines, bosses, or co-worker stress levels. While you should try to get your product out as fast as possible once you find a niche, you don t have to adhere to a strict timeline like so many other jobs. You will also be able to work when you want to. If you are a morning person, then work in the morning and take the rest of the day off. If you are a night person, then work into the night if you choose. Since you can research online anytime you want, you can create a work schedule that is just for you. Learn As You Earn Even though some of your niche markets may turn out to be less than profitable, you will still have learned much about a new hobby or fad that can be used at a later time or just to make good conversation at a niche forum. That will help you to be perceived as more of an expert to the niche so whey you turn out another product, they will be highly likely to buy from you. If you enjoy learning about topics that are new to you, then niche marketing will provide you with many opportunities to learn more about the world around you. 33

If you want to become an expert in a particular topic, you can create several products to sell to one niche market. Your name will become recognizable quickly and sales will increase. As long as the niche is interested in what you have to offer, you can produce as much as you want. Endless Income Possibilities The amount you earn will depend mostly on the amount of interest people have in your product. This is why research and preparation are so important in the beginning. Why waste your time creating a product that no one is interested in purchasing? Once you become more comfortable with Internet and offline research, creating your product, and marketing it, you will be able to repeat the process at a much faster rate. Keep in mind that you are not reinventing the wheel; you are simply learning the best ways to approach smaller markets and repeating the same process over and over. This will earn you the most income. BENEFITS OF NICHE MARKETING BUSINESSES Now that you have learned more about the benefits of niche marketing for personal gain and financial stability, you should consider how easy it is to get started. Because starting a small business can be frightening Below you will find the 34

benefits of selling products to niche markets as opposed to starting other types of Internet businesses. These benefits include: Repeating the same simple routine Residual income Low cost of product fulfillment (Digital downloads.) Ability to sell same products in other markets Niche marketing is a business whose growth is determined by the amount of energy you want to put into research and creating a product. Repeating the Same Simple Routine Even though niche marketing has become more popular over the years, most people do not take the time to learn how it works because of these two words: research and product. Since these words imply hard work, being innovative, and imaginative, most people are scared to move beyond learning what niche marketing is. to learning how to turn it into a profitable business. While you will have to spend a few hours a week researching possible niche markets, once you find them, you can begin creating your product and selling it. You can use the same research techniques mentioned in the opening chapters of this 35

book over and over until they become second nature. This will reduce the time spent researching. What most people don t understand is that once you have learned how to spot a possible niche, your work is almost done. Residual Income Once you present your product, you can move on to the next niche market. Unlike other products where you make improvements to increase sales, niche marketing, in most cases, is short-term meaning you will only earn a certain amount on one project. But while you are busy working on another, your current product will be earning money. After circulating a few products to different niche markets, you will be able to sit back and enjoy the additional income. You can take your time finding the most profitable niches, or begin working on other business ideas. Residual income gives you the freedom to make better business decisions over the long term. Low Overhead Costs When Using Downloads Chances are the informational products you will be selling include reports, ebooks, or guides that inform and educate. These days, you don t have to create physical copies of your materials. Customers can download them to their computers 36

from your website. This is very easy and does not cost much in monthly website fees. By allowing customers to download your products, they will be much happier receiving products in minutes rather than having to wait for their materials to arrive through regular mail. They will also be able to download materials at any time. You save money on printing and shipping costs and don t have to worry about running out of books to sell. Ability to Sell Products in Multiple Markets When conducting research, you may find that two markets share the same needs. This means you can create one product and sell it in different markets. Having the ability to increase your income from one product is another perk of this business. Now that you have a better understanding of the benefits of selling products to smaller groups and starting a niche marketing business as opposed to other Internet businesses, it is time to learn more about how to go about finding niches and determining their value. Even if your Internet experience is limited, there are a few key websites to visit that can provide you with most of the information you need when choosing niche markets. 37

CHAPTER 4: HOW TO RESEARCH NICHES At this point, you should have a pretty good idea of what a niche market is as well as the many benefits of marketing to smaller groups. In this chapter, you will learn more about researching possible niche markets. Because there are so many possible niche markets available, it can be confusing when you first start out. Do not be discouraged because once you learn the system, it will become very easy to spot a niche group through simple research techniques that you can use time and time again. While the Internet can be your best friend when trying to see if a niche group will be profitable, there are many other sources for you to use when brainstorming. The best way to approach Internet research is to first create a list of possibilities. Don t be afraid to list any hunches you have, or even ideas that seem absurd. Some of the best targets are small groups that want what others do not. Your list can be as long as you want it to be, but you should continually add to it so you have an endless pool of ideas to draw profitable niches from. 38

Before you begin researching online, generate your list from the sources below as they can help you create a solid foundation for your list and reduce the time spent surfing on your computer. LOOK AROUND YOU One of the easiest ways to find potential niches is to look around you. Observing trends, seeing what s popular, and determining what people want isn t as hard as it may seem. The best ways to observe the trends to see what s popular include the following: Watching television When watching your favorite television programs, observe how many times the same commercial airs or the same types of commercials air and at which times during the day. Ad space on television is very expensive, so large companies are not going to waster their money creating commercials that are not going to be profitable. It is from these commercials that you can find smaller niche groups within the groups the large companies are advertising to. Add to your list popular products that you see. Later, when you are conducting your Internet research, you take a general product such as an antique car and narrow this topic down to specific cars and other 39

products associated with collecting, selling, or identifying antique cars. Many times, you will find a niche market by first researching popular more ones. When watching television, don t forget to view a few infomercials, visit television shopping channels, and identify trends in fashion, home décor, and others while watching your favorite sit-com or drama. In addition to television, note commercials you hear on the radio as well. Visiting Bookstores Bookstores as a goldmine when searching for niche groups. While you may be inclined to drop by your local bookstore, visit larger chains such as Barnes and Noble and Borders because these chains cater to trends and books that are currently popular. The key to finding a profitable niche is to find a hot trend and then find a group that is interested in an offshoot of that trend. Chances are they are searching for products that satisfy their curiosity. Large chain bookstores also make it easy for you to browse through quickly. All the popular topics are usually placed in the front of the store. After taking note of some of these products, move to specific categories to see what is trendy. Most of these major 40

bookstores also have a magazine section where you will be able to see what currently interests people the most. Flip through some of these magazines and look for the ads section. These ads may give you clues as to which niche groups are the most popular at the moment. If you are familiar with the subject of the magazine, take note of what s missing. You may stumble upon a popular niche market that no one is currently selling to. In addition to finding possible niche markets to add to your list, you can also determine which niches are full. This means that there are too many people competing in the market, which could indicate smaller profits. By eliminating niches early, you can save valuable research time. Reading Newspapers Reading local or national newspapers is another way to stay in touch with the latest trends to see what people are interested in learning more about. The newspaper also includes ads and a classifieds section that can provide you with many possible niche markets to add to your list. Pay attention to the editorial section as well to get a better idea of what social issues people are concerned about the most. 41

Social Gatherings Now that you are on the look out for possible niche markets, pay close attention to what people are discussing at parties and other social gatherings. You will be surprised by how many ideas you will gain by simply listening to others. Attending seminars, lectures, art openings, and other educational forums is another way to add to your list of niche markets. Remember that niche markets are oftentimes offshoots of popular markets. Attending smaller events that attract a specific group of people can be very beneficial to you. SURFING THE WEB By now, your possible niche markets list should be growing. Keep in mind that niche marketing should be fun and give you the opportunity to learn more about people and about topics you may never have heard of before. You should enjoy visiting bookstores, attending social events, and keeping up with the times by reading the newspaper and magazines. While you will learn plenty by leaving your home and interacting with others each day, there is a lot of information you can gather from the Internet as well. But since surfing 42

the web can become tedious, below is a short list of places you can visit when adding ideas to your list. Later, you will learn how to use these resources when choosing niche markets and brainstorming for possible product ideas. Amazon.com The largest online bookstore, Amazon.com not only lists books by category, but also gives you information on the most popular books on the site, recommends other books people have bought that are similar, and includes descriptions and reviews of books by experts and ordinary buyers. This is a wonderful resource when hunting for niche markets. Other large online bookstores including Borders and Barnes and Noble also have large websites that are helpful. Ebay For those who want to buy into some of the trends they see in fashion, home improvement, technology, and more, but who cannot afford to pay full price flock to online auction sites like ebay. When looking for niche markets, research the most popular auctions and items that people are searching for. You will also be able to get an idea of how much they are willing to pay for these items. Remember that those who use ebay are much more inclined to make other purchases online as well, so 43

finding niche markets through auction sites is a good indication that your product will sell very well. Visit ebay pulse to conduct searches or to find ideas for your list: Also visit: to read a monthly report that includes top selling categories on ebay. Craigslist Craigslist has managed to bring millions of people together by allowing them to buy and sell goods, services, and other items quickly and easily. This is a good resource to use when adding to your list because the site s inventory changes each day. You will be able to get a sense of what people want from the ads posted. You can search through different cities in the US and the world to see which goods and services are needed at any time. Visit craigslist: MySpace When targeting certain social groups, social networking sites like MySpace, YouTube, and Facebook are great 44

resources. You can see what is in this week and what is out the next. Because these sites cater to those in certain age groups, the information you learn may be limited, but is valuable nonetheless since most people who use this site also shop online. Visit: to learn more. Bookmarking sites Bookmarking sites were created to help people return to websites they have visited in the past. When people bookmark a site, this is a good indication that they will likely return to it and make a purchase or sign-up for membership. Popular bookmarking sites include: o Delicious Popular - o Digg - These sites catalogue the most popular bookmarked sites so others will be able to find them as well. When searching for niche markets, look at these bookmarking sites for good ideas. Blog directories are similar to bookmarking sites in that they list popular blogging sites that people visit. You will be able to find which topics interest people the most. Two popular blog directories include: 45

o IceRocket o Technorati Use these sites when you want to add to your possible niche markets list or when you need to conduct further information about a niche market. In later chapters, you will learn more about these sites and how to use them. Search engines Search engines like Google, Yahoo, and others now offer free services that allow you to conduct in-depth searches of popular topics to that tell you specific information like how many websites exist that cater to certain topics, how popular topic searches are, and current and past trends of these topics. In the next two chapters, you will learn more about how to use these tools and what to look for when choosing a niche. But for now, concentrate on building your list and using these tools to see what s popular on the Internet. Article databases Article databases are another important tool you can use when building your list. These databases store thousands of articles about every topic you can think of. They are used by webmasters and others who want to 46

fill their websites with valuable content, but who cannot afford to pay a freelance writer. You can search these databases to see which topics are being written about the most. This will give you a good idea of the popularity of topics so you can add them to your list. Popular article databases include: o Ezinearticles o Goarticles o Isnare.com By researching the topics these articles are being written about, you can find out enough information about the niche market to see if it is profitable or not. Searching the Internet is not as difficult or time consuming when you know where to look. Since you are only looking for possible niche markets for your list, this should not take up too much of your time. Once you have a list of 50 or more topics, then you are ready to conduct thorough online research. At this stage, you will be narrowing down your list and creating a new one that includes profitable niche markets. This does not mean you should stop adding to your list of possibilities, however. 47

Each day, try to add five new topics that look promising using the methods mentioned above. Always maintain this list so you never run out of ideas. As your business grows, you may only add five new topics per week, but the point is to keep your eyes and ears open because you never know where the latest marketing opportunity will come from. 48

CHAPTER 5: POPULAR NICHE CATEGORIES Because knowing where to find possible niche markets online is only part of the equation for running a successful niche marketing business, in this chapter, you will learn how to use specific tools offered by search engines and other sources to narrow down large categories into smaller ones. It is from these smaller categories that you will find a wealth of niche markets waiting for your products. If you have been keeping a list of possible niche markets, your online research will go a lot smoother. Have this list ready when visiting search engines like Google and Yahoo. While there are other search engines you can use such as MSN Search, Lycos, and Dogpile, most of the information you find using these search engines was taken from Google and Yahoo listings. Starting at the source will save time and energy when researching niche markets. Below is a list of less common, but still useful search engines that you can use when searching for niche markets: Nichebot - Shopping.com Top Searches

AOL Hot Searches - Dogpile Webcrawler MSN These search engines include up to date news and information they may provide you with clues as to where the next trend is coming from which could indicate new niche markets. In this chapter, we will focus on finding niche categories using tools provided by Google and Yahoo since these search engines are the most popular sites that people use when looking for information. By using the tools provided, you will be able to find smaller groups, analyze what they are purchasing and where they are most likely to go when looking for products as well as how much they are willing to pay for them. The Clickbank Marketplace and the Wayback Machine are other resources your can use to learn more about your completion and to generate ideas about products to sell. 50

GOOGLE If you re like most people, you've used Google once or twice when searching for information online. But have you ever used Google for more than just web searches? If not, then you are missing out on some very good tools provided that can make searching the Internet not only more effective, but also fun. One of the best places to start is by finding out which products are popular today. On Google s homepage, click more located in left-hand corner. Click products and you will see a list of products. You can begin your search for niche markets here. Compare what s on your list to see if there are any categories that match. If not, don t give up; hold on to your list as you can use these topics in other searches. Begin by clicking on topics that interest you. These topics may also be easier to create products for later on because you have an interest in them. Keep in mind that for now, you are simply browsing the Internet looking for popular items that people are searching for. Listed below are other tools to use when searching for niche markets. 51

Google Directory When you want to narrow down a topic, the Google directory is a good place to begin. To get to the directory, go to You will be given a list of popular categories to search that will help you narrow down your topic. Pull out your list and begin your search. Each category has sub-categories to search. Eventually, you will reach a page that contains a list of websites where you can find additional information. If there are few websites listed, this is a good indication that you have found a profitable niche because the niches needs are not being met. Google Sets If you are having difficulty narrowing down your topic or you want to generate more categories from a larger topic, use Google sets. This is a tool that allows you to create a set of like items that you can search from. Visit to use this tool. This is a good tool to use when brainstorming for niche markets as well. After a set has been created, you can search through websites that contain the information. Google Zeitgeist This tool is used to help you generate niche ideas or to see how popular the topics on your list are. You can search in the 52

US or around the world if you choose. While this is tool will only give you an idea of how popular a trend is becoming, it is handy when beginning your research. Google Trends If you have a few topics that have gained exposure in the past few months, you will want to check out their popularity to see if it will continue to be popular a few weeks or months from now. Google trends is a tool that can give you a better idea of how many people have been searching for a topic over a certain amount of time. You can track the progress of any topic you like to see if the trend will continue of if it will die down. Trends on the downside are usually not worth pursuing. Visit Google Labs, to see more search options and tools that are available. While some of the tools are experiments at the moment, you will find some that are very useful in your search for profitable niche markets. Google Adsense Google Adsense is a marketing tool you can use when you want to know how high or low the bids are on certain keywords. When businesses pay to advertise on search 53

engine result pages for Google or Yahoo, they first have to bid on the keyword. Those who bid the highest are able to place an ad on the results page for that keyword. If the bids are high for the keywords you're interested in, more than a dollar in most cases, then the competition may be too fierce, which means it will be less profitable. But if the keyword bid is low, usually around thirty cents, then the competition is probably not as fierce, but the niche market might not be too profitable if there isn't enough interest by those looking for information. Further research will be needed. Visit for a tour of all the tools you can find on Google Adsense. YAHOO Yahoo is another popular search engine you may have used when looking for information online. Like Google, Yahoo offers several tools you can use to aid in your search for niche markets. The Yahoo directory is where you will find a list of all the categories Yahoo has to offer. Similar to Google, you can click 54

on a topic and narrow your scope until you find websites that offer information. Other tools you can use include: Yahoo Search Marketing Yahoo search marketing used to be called Yahoo Overture, but changed its name when Yahoo decided to add services to those advertising on Yahoo search engine results. If you want to use the tools provided by Yahoo search marketing, you will have to open a free account by visiting With your account, you will be able to research the popularity of the topics on your list, the average bid on keywords by other businesses, and which markets keywords are used most often. If you have a bunch of very broad topics on your list, you can break them down by creating a list of keywords that best describes the topic. Begin your search by entering in keywords to see how popular they are by those surfing the Internet. Keywords that have been searched more than 50,000 times in one month may be too popular to be considered a niche market. On the other hand, keywords that have been 55

searched less than 10,000 times in a month may not have enough interest to be profitable. You should try to find keywords that have been searched between 10,000 and 50,000 times in one month. This means that there is enough interest in the niche and there may be little competition. Once you have narrowed your topics, visit Google and use their bid tools to see if the results are similar. Yahoo Buzz Yahoo buzz is a great place to find ideas for niche by getting a better idea about what people are searching for online. Similar to Google Zeitgeist, you will be given a list of hot topics that can be turned into keywords for your research. Visit for more information. After narrowing down your list and finding a few niche groups that look promising, it's time to begin putting your product together. Since the majority of those who earn an income sell information in the form of an ebook, or special report, your product will probably be digitally based. This means it can be downloaded directly from your site to the user's computer after they pay for it. Because niche markets have a limited life span, you will need to act quickly in putting together your materials so you can 56

sell them before the trend wears off or competition becomes too fierce. But if you are unsure as to which products to offer, the following websites can help you find products that appeal to your niche group. CLICKBANK MARKETPLACE One of the best resources you can use to see the types of products being sold. Clickbank is a company that helps people sell their own digital products including ebooks, white papers, and special reports, and also helps people find profitable affiliate marketing programs so they can sell another company's products. You can use Clickbank to search for your topics by category, sub category, keyword, or by product. Since Clickbank helps people sell their products, you can also get a better idea of what your competition is offering. Depending on your niche, you may only have one or two competitors, but if you want to stand out, you will have to create a product that is different from theirs. Visit and click the 'Buy Products' tab to research your niche groups to find suitable products to sell. 57

WAYBACK MACHINE If you want to see how long your competition has been selling products to a niche group, you can use the Wayback Machine. This is an interesting tool that lets you research a website back a few years to see when they added pages, made changes, or when they stopped updating them. This is a useful tool that you can use to get a better sense of their competition. You can view past pages they may have changed to see the products they used to offer, still offer, as well as products they are selling currently. Visit to use the Wayback Machine, which is a free tool sponsored by the Internet Archive. USING THESE TOOLS TOGETHER To get the best results, you should use the tools and services mentioned above together in order to have the most accurate research. By taking the time to research niche groups thoroughly, you will have better results in terms of profits than if you choose a niche market after reading about it in one source. While a niche market may seem profitable on the surface, you have to consider the costs of advertising which enables your 58

target group to find your site. If specific keywords used to describe your product or niche are not being used often enough, then your product will probably not sell that well. This is why researching keywords on both Google and Yahoo is important. Understanding what people want to know more about will give you a better chance at making a profit. Spend some time learning how to use these tools. Once you have sold two or three products, researching your next niche will become easier. Because most people do not bother to perform research on niche markets before selling to them, you have an advantage of getting it right the first time. While some of your niches will prove more profitable than others, if you spend the time researching topics on your list, you will be able to discard those that will clearly not be profitable and save yourself the time, money, and energy in creating a product and advertising it online. In the next chapter, you will learn ten ways to tell if your niche will be popular after conducting research. This too, will become easier once you have had some practice. When first starting out, try all the tools listed in this book. Once you develop your own system and are generating a steady income, then you may be able to rely more on certain tools than on others. Researching niche markets is not difficult and you will appreciate the time you spend once your 59

product is being downloaded and you are seeing the profits of your work. 60

CHAPTER 6: FIVE WAYS TO TELL IF A NICHE WILL BE PROFITABLE At this point, you've learned a lot about niche marketing and the tools you can use to find niche groups, how to narrow your searches, and how to locate popular niche groups that are desperate for products that inform and educate. During your research, you will stumble upon many possibilities that seem profitable at first, but after a little prodding, you discover they are already covered or there just isn't as much interest in the niche as you originally thought. Don't let this discourage you. Even the most skilled niche marketers run into duds from time to time. To make things a little easier, in this chapter, you will learn five ways to quickly determine if a niche is worth pursuing or not. While research is the key to success in niche marketing, it is counterproductive to spend all of your precious time hunting down niches that are not profitable when you can train yourself to see early warning signs that maybe the niche isn't what it seems. 61

1. DETERMINE THE LEVEL OF INTEREST If you can determine the level of interest in a topic early on, you will save a lot of time when researching possible niche markets. A healthy, profitable niche is one that people are interested in learning more about. And while there may be a book or two on the topic, information online isn't readily available. As you begin your research, take note of how many books are listed on websites like Amazon.com and BarnesandNoble.com. If you find three or more books that have been published within the last six months or a year, then you should continue your research. Since these companies are in the book selling business to make money, they will not carry books that are not selling quickly. Books that are in demand can tell you a lot about the niche. The next step is to see if there are any magazines or other publications on the topic that are available to the general public. This can also tell you if there is a sufficient level of interest to support the niche. Newsletters, online or off, are a good resource as well. The last place to check when trying to get a read on the level of interest is to conduct keyword searches for possible niches and topics on Google and Yahoo to see if people are actively searching online for more information. 62

As mentioned earlier, keywords that have been searched at least 10,000 times show a moderate level of interest and indicate a niche that is profitable. Once you have determined the level of interest, you should decide whether it's worth your time to pursue the topic in order to find the niche, or abandon it and begin researching other possible niches. 2. DETERMINE IF THERE IS A NEED FOR A PRODUCT After finding a niche that is thriving online, the next step is to find products that already cater to this niche. Visiting websites that are related to the niche will direct you to products that are available. During this stage, you should consider the following: How many products are available If these products are similar in that they provide similar information If there are any products that are not present, but should be Even if you find that there are products already being sold to a niche group, if these products are not suitable, or if they only appeal to a small cross-section of the niche, then there 63

may be room for your product. Take note of what is missing when conducting research. This can help in determining if a niche will be profitable and also when brainstorming for product ideas. If you find that the niche is saturated with products, then you should move on to the next niche. Profitable niches come and go very quickly, so oftentimes it's more about timing than the product you want to sell. Since there are many niches out there, you should find new ones with little difficulty. On the other hand, if you find a niche that is not getting the attention it deserves from other niche marketers, then you need to act on it quickly before the competition finds it. Creating a product within a few days as well as a website is important. Once you start your marketing campaign and people begin buying the product, the competition won't stand a chance. For many in niche marketing, as soon as they see one or two others selling products to a niche, they will move on to the next one. 3. MEASURING THE LEVEL OF COMPETITION As mentioned above, the amount of competition you face is another factor that can quickly rule out a niche as being profitable. Since niche groups are small, they usually can only sustain one or two products. Unless you have something 64

radical to sell, you will end up catering to a niche that is already saturated. Depending on the size of the niche, which can be determined through keyword searches, the number of forums created for the niche, and websites that are available, you should find your own comfort level when it comes to outselling the competition. If you are a salesperson at heart, you may enjoy the competition. If not, then walk away and find another niche. Because niches consist of ideas, products, and hobbies that are trendy, don't expect a niche to be profitable forever. This is why many in niche marketing find a few niches and launch several products at one time in order to keep the money rolling in. Niches that are saturated with products are usually on their way out, so be careful when investing your time and money in creating products and advertising them. As a rule, niches with more than three or four products attached to them are considered saturated. It's just not worth the time pursuing a niche that will not yield you the most profits possible from those looking for information. 4. NUMBER OF RELATED NICHES 65

The number of related niches, or sub niches, is a good indication of how popular a niche actually is. There are tools like Google Sets, which can offer sets of words or topics that are related and is an excellent tool to use when looking for popular keywords for your niche. But while researching these words, you may find other keywords that are just as popular. Following these keywords to see how popular they are can lead to profitable sub niches, or they can lead you to groups so small they are not worth marketing to. Use these Tools: If a niche has several related niches, your chances of finding a profitable one increase for a few reasons. First, the niche may be popular for a longer amount of time and people are curious about topics within the niche and are actively looking for information. Second, since most fads are an offshoot of another fad, you may find a popular niche that is saturated with information, but newer sub niches may have just been created, which may mean that the information available is little to none. Third, because sub niches can become popular at any time, your competition may not have found them yet, which means 66

you can create your product, upload it, and begin making sales quickly. Niches that have too many related niches attached may not be profitable because the popularity of the niche may be dying out. Depending on the number of other products available, you may have found a niche that was once profitable, but is no more. It is best to begin looking for a new niche at this point. Finding related niches is easy. Every search engine results page contains related keywords and topics for you to search. Click on a few of these to see how many search results are found. Make a list of these keywords and find out how popular they are. This will give you a better idea of how large the original niche is and how many related niches there are online. 5. LENGTH OF YOUR SEARCH How much time you spend researching a possible niche is another indication of how profitable it may be. If you're having difficulty finding information on a topic, or you are having difficulty narrowing the topic down to one or two niches when using simple search tools, then there may not be enough interest in the niche to make it a profitable one. If, 67

after spending twenty or thirty minutes researching a niche, you don't find much information, then begin a new search. Searches that take less than twenty minutes may indicate that the niche is popular, but also saturated with competition. Because web spiders used by search engines assign web rank through keywords, back links, and other indicators, search result pages that list thousands and thousands of websites means there is a lot content to be found on the topic you're researching. Another indicator is the number of times the keyword has been searched. Anything over 50,000 times in one month is a sign that the niche is saturated with products or will be very soon. How long you spend researching your topics in order to narrow them down will be up to you. A thorough search should take no more than an hour once you are able to narrow down your topic and find books, magazines, ads, and other items that pertain to the niche. WHAT TO DO ONCE YOU'VE FOUND A PROFITABLE NICHE When you find a niche that you believe will be profitable, it is important to begin developing your product, building your 68

website, and planning your marketing strategy as soon as you can. The goal is to beat the competition and get your product out there first. Even though you will be very excited to have found your first profitable niche, you need to stay focused and begin planning your next move. If you are new to Internet marketing, you will find Chapter 9 very informative as it will tell you where to place ads online and how to get the attention of those searching for your products. A profitable niche may only be profitable for a few weeks or months depending on how big it is and the demand for products. Some niches can be profitable for a year or more. Regardless of how long the niche is profitable, it is your job to create a product that appeals to the niche, provides them with information they've been searching for, and market it properly so it can be as profitable for you as possible 69

CHAPTER 7: SEVEN COMMON RESEARCH MISTAKES Throughout this book, you've learned the importance of properly researching possible niches and niche groups before creating a product and marketing it. Unfortunately, many people who go into this type of online business, even if they have good intentions, fail to do all the research necessary or they ignore what the research tells them and market a product that may not be as successful as they had hoped. After you finish reading this book, you will have the resources and the tools needed to research topics, find profitable niche groups, and create and market a product that will be successful. However, the work you put into it will determine how successful you'll be in this endeavor. Below you will find seven common mistakes that many beginners and experienced niche marketers make when looking for profitable niche markets. Even though these mistakes seem small, they can potentially cause people to lose profits that could have been theirs if they had only chosen niche markets more carefully. 70

1. NOT TAKING THE TIME TO CONDUCT ENOUGH RESEARCH The best way to consistently earn an income through niche marketing is by carefully researching possible niches until you find a few that will be profitable. While this concept is simple, there are many people who don't want to take the time to search online, visit their local bookstore, or read the newspaper. By taking the time and spending a few hours researching niches, you have a distinct advantage from those who choose not to conduct research or those who conduct only a little research. Skipping this step in the process will not help you in any way, so please do not overlook the importance of research. Another reason research is so important is that by researching what people are interested in learning more about, you will find materials that can be used in your product. This can save you a lot of time in the long run. While conducting research, you can build a list of possible sources to use when the time comes to write that ebook, newsletter, or tutorial. Combining steps is a great way to complete projects in a shorter amount of time. 71

2. IGNORING RESEARCH FINDINGS Another common mistake that people make when engaging in niche marketing is ignoring all the warning signs that a niche will not be profitable. These signs include: Not enough interest in keywords related to your niche Few magazines or books written on the topic Hard to find ads in magazines or online that promote products pertaining to the niche The niche is so new that people are still in the very beginning stages of curiosity about it Too many keyword searches on the niche signals too much competition Saturated marketplace within the niche Product you had in mind has already been created There are many warning signs that should tell you the niche, while it was a good idea, will not be a profitable one. Sometimes when people are engaged in the research, they forget that the ultimate goal of niche marketing is to provide people with new and valuable information that will yield you a handsome profit. 72

Even if you believe you have exceptional sales skills, you enjoy a challenge, or you are so interested in the topic that you want to market a product to others who feel the same, remember that there are hundreds of possible niche markets out there. Consider the amount of time you will be spending in creating a product, creating a website, and marketing how much is this time worth to you? Isn't it better spent marketing a product you know will sell quickly and easily? Once you've become more comfortable with the process and want to try your hand at marketing in more competitive markets, then it may be worth the risk. But for now, choose niches that will be profitable over those that may require more marketing savvy. 3. FAILURE TO NARROW DOWN NICHE CATEGORIES Starting with a broader category and narrowing it down is part of the fun of niche marketing. But if you don't take the time to find smaller groups, you may not find many categories that aren't already saturated with products. People who are new to niche marketing should begin by creating a list of possible niche groups as this will give them a base to start. During the research, this list should become shorter and topics should become narrower. 73

By conducting online research using Google and Yahoo, you will be able to discover keywords and phrases that can help in this process. Narrowing your searches has other benefits as well. You may discover a few profitable niches that pertain to one of the topics on your list. It is only through brainstorming and seeing where the research will take you that you will find these niches. One category may lead to several subcategories that will lead to one or more niche groups that you would not have found had you not followed the research trail. Another benefit is all the possible topics you can add to your list when you begin a new project. Try to always keep a running list of possible niches so you can refer to them whenever you have some spare time and want to conduct a little research. For many in niche marketing, it's not uncommon to have two, three, four, or more products out there are one time all catering to different niche groups. 4. NARROWING TOPICS TOO MUCH On the other hand, narrowing your topics too much can cause you to miss profitable niches or find niches that are so small; there is little profit to be made. As you become more proficient in researching possible niches, this issue should 74

resolve itself, however. While it's fine to follow the research trail to see where it ends, this can be very time consuming. When you narrow your topics too much, you are also eliminating the possibility of finding niches that are related to your topic. You should stop narrowing your topics when you find a niche with possibilities or if you find other topics to research. Ways to tell if you've narrowed your search too much include: Number of keyword searches is lower than 10,000 per month Limited amount of information found about the niche Niche has not shown any dramatic growth in the past few months Another way to tell if you've narrowed your niche too much is there will be few keywords available for topics that are related to the niche. 5. FAILURE TO UTLIZE DIFFERENT SOURCES As a niche marketer, you should enjoy the research process. Because it is similar to detective work, you should be actively researching throughout the day. If you mainly conduct research online, you may see the entire picture. 75

Visiting your local chain bookstore once a week, reading your daily newspaper, and talking to friends and family, you will be able to find out a lot without having to feel like you're working all the time. Utilizing different online resources is important as well in order to conduct thorough research. In this book, you have been given many resources, tools, and places where you can go to find out more on the topics you've listed. As you become better at spotting profitable niche groups, your research habits may change slightly, but for, now use all available resources online and off to find the most profitable niches. Another issue you could run into by not researching your niches carefully is that the product you create may already be out there. You don't want to sell the same or similar product as someone else, especially to a smaller group. If another person has already built a reputation within the niche, it will be even more difficult to sell the same product. It is only through research that you will be able to learn more about your competition and what they already have out there. 6. FAILURE TO RESEARCH THE COMPETITION This brings us to another common mistake that those starting in niche marketing may make. You need to research your 76

potential competition for several reasons. If a niche is too populated with products, then it may not be profitable. Niche marketing is successful when people are in need of the information you can provide them. If people have too many choices, then your profits will suffer. You also want to know the types of products that are currently available for the niche you want to target to see if there is a new angle you can take. Creating a product that is the same or similar to one that is already available will not be as profitable as one that is unique. Another reason why it is important to know your competition is to get a better idea of the marketing strategies they are using. If they have targeted this niche group, then it must be profitable. Review their product, website, and other information they provide to see which keywords they use, how their sales letter is constructed, and who their target audience. Many times you will find that there are several audiences within one niche. Finding the audience that is not being catered to can be very profitable. There is nothing shady or unethical about checking out the competition, it is a great way to find out more about the niche and to see if there is any profit in it. 77

7. CREATING A PRODUCT BEFORE FINDING A NICHE One of the best reasons to pursue niche marketing is the potential to earn profits by supplying those who are in search of information the materials they need. To ensure that each of your products will be profitable, finding out the needs of the niche is important. But some people reverse this and create a product to sell and then find a niche to sell to. While you can still make a profit from creating a product first, you are taking a gamble because you may not find a niche that is receptive to it. Why take this gamble when you can find a niche that is definitely interested in your product by conducting a little research first? If you are not the sales person type, then niche marketing is for you. Taking the time to research niches before selling a product will save you time, money, and allow you to move on to a new projects. Now that you know more about the common mistakes people make when trying to break into niche marketing, it should be very easy to avoid them. In the next chapter, you will learn how to create a website and sales letter that can be used to sell your product to the niche markets you have chosen. 78

CHAPTER 8: BUILDING A WEBSITE TO SELL PRODUCTS IN NICHE MARKETS In this chapter, you will learn what it takes to build a simple, yet effective website that can be used to promote your product and also take orders electronically so you don't have to be involved in selling or distributing the product. Thanks to Internet technology, all you have to do is upload your product, and find the appropriate payment program that will accept payments and release your product for download. You can invest in a shopping cart program, use websites like Paypal ( or you can find a web host that provides payment acceptance programs to its customers. REGISTERING YOUR DOMAIN In order to create a website that others can use to download products, your first step will be to register a domain so you can reserve a website address to prevent others from taking it. If you have other websites, then you already know how this is done. If not, then you have a few options. You can visit domain registration sites to see which names are taken and which are available. If a domain is available, you have the 79

option of purchasing it. If not, then you need to keep trying until you find one that is. Reputable domain search companies include: Keep in mind that you will still have to find a web host and rent some space online if you want to create a website even after registering a domain name. Some domain registration companies also offer web hosting and will combine the domain registration fee with the monthly web hosting fee into one easy payment. While you may be tempted to use free web hosting services, they are not always reliable and can be shut down at any time. Also free web hosts are able to post any type of ads on your site in lieu of payment, so be warned that you may have to compete with other ads on your site when trying to sell your product. Some company's that offer web hosting include: 80

Geocities (partner of Yahoo) There are many more, but these offer low monthly fees and control panels that allow you to customize your website quickly and easily. You will also be able to track your marketing campaign with stats and trend reports that you know how well your sales are going and how many visitors you have each day. BUILDING YOUR WEBSITE When selling one product on a website, you do not need to create a fifty page website complete with flashy ads, lots of graphics, and other tricks that other online businesses do to increase awareness of their site. Because your product will be popular for a shorter amount of time, spending hours and hours finding the right fonts, creating articles, and customizing the sequence of the pages is not worth it. Keep in mind that your niche group is hungry for information they are unable to find anywhere else. This means they will not need as much encouragement and pushing to place an order. If you are the only game in town, chances are you will receive business regardless of whether you have the website 81

online or a professional, but simple site that highlights the benefits of the product. You do not have to be a computer genius to create a professional website that promotes your products. Since you will be using other forms of marketing including PPC, keywords on your site, and joining forums and creating blogs, your website will mostly be used as a platform to accept payment after a customer orders your product. Your web host will have many templates to choose from when the time comes to build your site. Most niche marketing sites contain a sales letter explaining the benefits of purchasing the product. You will learn more about writing an effective sales letter in the next section of this chapter. Sales letters also include links to purchasing your product; offer a free gift, or bonus report that entices people to make a purchase immediately. Images of your product will also help when making a sale. Depending on the amount of information you want to share with visitors, most sales letters are between two and eight pages. Another benefit of niche marketing is that you don't have to spend days creating a website. By using templates, writing an effective sales letter, and adding a few images, you can create an efficient website in a day or less. 82

CRAFTING YOUR SALES LETTER Many people are intimidated by the thought of creating a sales letter in order to get people to buy their products. By rethinking the purpose of your sales letter, you can create one that is interesting, tells visitors about the benefits of your product, the features of your product, and how they can order it quickly online. Headlines Headlines are the most valuable tool you have when writing an effective sales letter. Headlines should not only direct visitors to the next section of your letter, but they should also create interest and suggest what the section will be about. While this may seem like a lot or work, you can reduce your stress by breaking the letter up into sections and finishing one at a time until you have a complete letter. Creating headlines first can help you maintain your focus on each section. Your main headline should explain your product. For example, if you want to sell a product about starting an herb garden, which headline below do you think is better? 'Starting an Herb Garden in Your Home' 83

Or 'Five Ways to Start an Herb Garden Using Nothing More than an Old Flower Box, Some Dirt, and Seeds' Which one grabs your attention and curiosity? Which one are you mostly likely to spend time reading? Don't worry about your headline being too long or too wordy. The more you can explain about the product, the more people will want to read it. Subheadings should be just as bold, but they don't have to be as long. These headings should mention benefits of you product and continue to entice so the entire letter is read. You may need to reword your headings a few times, but the time spent perfecting them will pay off in increased sales. Tone of Sales Letter The tone of your sales letter should be conversational. If this is difficult for you, imagine talking to a close friend or relative. While your letter should be grammatically correct, it should also appeal to your target audience. By now, you should have a pretty good idea about who your niche group is and what they are looking for. 84

Benefits vs. Features It is this area that people have the most problems when writing a sales letter. Because most people buy products and services using emotional reasoning rather than logical reasoning, your sales letter should include all the benefits of your product that appeal to the emotional rather than the logical. Benefits can include: Ways your product can make a person's life more enjoyable or easier Reasons why your product can make it easier to pursue a hobby and why this hobby is beneficial in the lives of visitors Ways to improve a person's health, improve their financial situation, and other areas where people want to improve How your product can make a person happier Make a list of benefits that your product can provide and talk about them in your sales letter. The more benefits you can use, the better your sales letter will be. It is important not to make claims you can't back up, however. If you are selling a health product, for example, you 85

will need to do your research and find benefits of specific ingredients, overall treatment, and include medical statistics and testimonials from experts in the medical field to back up your claims. Even though you want your sales letter to include mostly benefits, you should include a few features, which invoke logical reasoning, so people will feel they are getting a full, honest explanation of what your product can do for them. Features include: Background on product Physical description of product (ebook table of contents, list of topics, etc.) How the product has helped others You can create a separate section that explains these features or you can sprinkle them in with your benefits. Keep in mind that your sales letter should include all relevant information you have about your product. While this may seem like a lot of work, the research you have gathered when creating your product should be enough. Additional Content In addition to writing about the benefits and features of your product, you can also include: 86

Testimonials of satisfied customers Documented research Quotes from experts in the niche product you're promoting Free reports, newsletters, and other gifts you are offering Any other information you find when creating your product that you believe will increase sales Any content that you add should only help to sell the product. Maintaining a positive outlook in your sales letter is the best way to inform people of your product. Ordering Your Product You should make it as easy as possible when it comes to ordering your product. Include a few links throughout your sales letter that visitors can click on when they are ready to place an order. Fonts and Font Color The font of your first headline should be the larger than the rest of the text. You can use different colors for your 87

headlines, underline, or bold them. Subheadings should be a little larger than the rest of the text, but not larger than the main heading. Don't use too much color, however. Choosing the wrong colors is difficult to read and could cause readers to not take you seriously. Your goal is to create a professional sales letter that persuades people to buy your product. Create colored links to ordering pages to grab the attention of visitors. IN THE END While sales letters are used to encourage people to buy goods and services, they should also serve to inform, entertain, and encourage visitors to learn more. Adding humor, fun facts, and other information can only make your sales letter more effective. Don't be afraid to show your personality in your letter. While you want to remain professional, you also want to connect with people so they will build trust and become more interested in your product. 88

CHAPTER 9: SELLING NICHE PRODUCTS ONLINE By this point, you should have a pretty good idea about how to find niche markets. Your next step will be to learn how to market a niche product, promote your website, and attract people to that site so they can learn more about your product. There are several ways to do this including online marketing using Pay-per-click advertising(ppc), keyword optimization, and other methods that allow you to speak directly to your niche market and will cost you less in advertising costs. When selling products online, you need to be aware of the types of marketing opportunities available so you can make the right decisions and make the most profit. Because people have different preferences when it comes to online marketing, once you've completed a few niche marketing projects and have made use one or more of the following online marketing methods, you will be able to find the formula that works the best for you. 89

Online marketing methods that will be discussed in this chapter include: Pay-per-click Advertising (PPC) Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Opt-in Mailing Lists Webmasters Forums, Blogs, and other Community Message Boards These methods have been very successful for most Internet business owners and are acceptable ways to attract attention to a website. As the Internet continues to grow, being noticed by target audiences becomes more difficult, so it will be up to you to create a marketing plan that works for each niche market you target. PAY-PER-CLICK ADVERTISING (PPC) Of all the online marketing methods listed above, this one is the most expensive, but also the most successful if you are able to advertise on search engine result pages that contain keywords relevant to your niche. You have probably seen PPC ads when conducting online searches. These ads appear on search engine result pages at the top and to the right of the page. In order to place on ad 90

on these pages, you will have to bid on keywords that you believe those looking for your product are most likely to use. Since there is limited space on these pages, only those with the highest bid will be able to place an ad. Depending on the number of people who want to place an ad using specific keywords, you may have to bid high in order to get a spot. Bids typically range from thirty cents a click to a dollar or more. This means that each time a person clicks on your ad, you will have to pay the amount per click that you bid. If on a budget, this can be a tedious task because while you have to be competitive, especially if the keyword is a popular one, you need to be able to estimate how many people will click on the ad each month based on the keyword's popularity. This is a tough marketing gamble to take if you are new to Internet marketing. While PPC can be very successful, there are other ways to advertise online that will generate interest in your product, especially if it is one of the only ones that caters to the niche. If you want to learn more about PPC advertising, visit Google Adsense to learn more about the bidding process, how to track your bids, and how to choose keywords wisely. 91

SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION (SEO) Another way to use keywords that pertain to your niche is to include them in your sales letter and other web copy. As mentioned in the last chapter, web spiders use keywords and other items when determining web rank. If you are able to choose the correct keywords, then your website will be ranked higher than others who use the same or similar keywords. Depending on the size of your website, you should choose a few keywords and an overall keyword density of 2%-5%. While you don't want to saturate your copy with keywords, including them will increase your chances for a higher ranking. Determining the number of times a keyword should be used is called 'keyword density'. Some of the free tools available online that can analyze keyword density in your web copy include: If you are unsure about which keywords to use, your notes from the research you conducted should be enough to help you choose words that describe the niche. Use Google tools to find out which keywords are the most popular for the niche topic and then use those words in your sales letter. 92

You should also include keywords in headings, sub headings, captions in any graphic images you use, and in Meta tags, which are located in the computer code used to create your website. OPT-IN MAILING LISTS Opt-in mailing lists are a useful tool when it comes to selling products online. If you are planning to sell several products to one niche, or the niche you have chosen has several closely related niches, then you may want to include an opt-in box that those who visit your site can sign-up to receive updates on when new products will be available. One of the easiest sales you can make is to a repeat customer. If they liked the previous product they purchased from you, they will most likely return and buy the next product you have to offer as well. After collecting addresses for your list, all you have to do is send a quick to those on your list and sit back and watch your sales increase. Since you probably won't have an opt-in list for your first product, you can buy lists from other online marketers, list services, and webmasters who cater to your niche. The number of addresses on these lists varies, but a typical list may contain two or three hundred addresses or less. Don't buy lists that claim to have thousands of addresses on 93

them, as these may be from spammers and you don't want to be associated with that element when trying to run a legitimate business. WEBMASTERS If the niche you have chosen is a popular one, chances are there may be a few websites that have been created to offer articles, updates, and other information. Contacting the webmasters of these sites and letting them know that you have a product to sell that pertains to the niche is a great way to utilize word of mouth advertising. Since webmasters control the information posted on the website, they may post a link to your website, a short introduction of your product, or they may write a review of the product if you allow them to have a copy. Getting to know the webmasters of the sites that cater to your niche is a great way to increase sales and introduce your products to those within the niche. In addition to informational websites, you should also find online magazines, newsletters, and other publications that allow you to buy ad space or feature products that cater to the niche for free. Depending on the size of the niche, those who publish newsletters within it are usually in need of content and will be very happy to talk to you about your product and help you promote it. 94

FORUMS, BLOGS, AND COMMUNITY MESSAGE BOARDS When targeting a niche, going directly to the source can help attract people to your website instantly. During your initial research, you may have come across community forums, blogs, and message boards for those interested in the niche. These sites are used for people to share in the same interests, swap information, and alert others when new information becomes available. By participating in forums and blogs, you can speak directly to your target audience, earn their trust, and persuade them to visit your site. How you approach online message boards is important because if you post comments that are only about increasing the exposure of your product, your posts may be removed by message board moderators, or you will gain a reputation of being just another salesperson wasting space. When you first visit a message board, take a look at some of the comments to get a feel of what people are interested in knowing about. If there are specific questions listed, use them to help post they right type of comment. Your response should address specific questions asked or it can be a general comment about the niche. Include your URL, but don't be pushy or make any false claims. A soft sell here works best. 95

Since you had to create a product that is helpful to the niche, you should have a lot of knowledge to share. By posting comments that offer solutions, help, and information, those who visit the message boards are more likely to click on your like and check out the product. By earning the trust of those within the niche, you will begin to see an increase in sales. THE REALITY OF ONLINE SALES You don't have to be a marketing guru or a computer genius to sell informational products online. Because you already have a niche to sell to, you do not have to create an intricate marketing campaign. By making use of the marketing options mentioned above, you can alert those within the niche easily. Even if you decide to pursue a PPC advertising campaign, you won't have to spend as much money as other Internet marketers who are trying to reach many audiences at once or extremely large audiences. In order to be successful in online sales, you need to present your product in a professional way on your website, target your audience, who in this case, are those interested in the niche you are pursuing with a marketing campaign that draws them to the website. Making the ordering process as easy as 96

possible will allow you to make quick sales and increase your profits. After completing your first niche project, you will begin to see just how easy it is to sell products online to those who need them. 97

CHAPTER 10: WHEN TO FIND A NEW NICHE All good things must come to an end as they say, even in the niche marketing business. While you do not want a niche to dry up and become unprofitable, it will eventually and you will have to move on to the next project. If you are planning for the future, you've already moved on after launching your product. But if you haven't gotten that far just yet, in this chapter, you will learn some of the warning signs that can tell you when its time to move on to the next project. These warning signs include: Noticeable decrease in sales Keywords for niche are not as popular as they were before Trend is decreasing Increased competition Advertisers show less interest Reduction in forum and blog activity 98

Keep in mind that even though the niche will not be as profitable, it can still bring in some money which is why you should maintain the website until you see little or no profits. Moving on to another project while receiving money from another is how many in this business build wealth and maintain a steady income. Many times, most or all of these warning signs will be present. And while the decision will be up to you as to when you should discontinue selling your product, keeping an eye on the niche is important because you don't want to lose money by maintaining a site that no one is visiting anymore. NOTICEABLE DECREASE IN SALES Because you can track your sales using tools provided by a web host, you can determine when sales are the highest, lowest, and where the majority of the people who buy the product are coming from. These tools can also be used to gauge when sales begin to decrease as well. Depending on the niche, you may be making sales several months from when you first introduced the product or sales could decrease within the first couple of weeks. As long as people continue to buy the product, however, a profit will be made. In the meantime, you should concentrate on finding a new niche. 99

Tracking your sales week by week is a way to determine when sales finally decrease so much that it's not worth maintaining the website. At this time, you should decide whether it is worth paying monthly website maintenance fees or if you should abandon the niche altogether. Tracking your sales for two weeks or more can give you a good idea of how much sales have decreased and if this is a trend that will continue. KEYWORDS NOT AS POPULAR Another way to tell if people have lost interest in the niche and your product is by researching keywords pertaining to the niche to see if they are still being used as much as they had been when you first launched the product. If popular keywords have dipped below 10,000 searches a month, then interest in the niche has decreased too much for you to make any more profits. If keywords are still holding strong and sales are coming in, then you should keep selling the product a little longer. Sometimes keywords for the niche change. This is for several reasons including the introduction of sub niches. Use tools provided by Google to see if there are any new keywords you should be aware of. Track these keywords to see what the usage numbers look like. Make your determination based on how sales are going and how the popular the niche seems to be. Just because the niche isn t receiving new interest, those 100

who are involved in the niche may be enough to keep it going. They may also be sending customers your way, which is why you should track where sales are coming from using the tools provided by the web host. TREND IS DECREASING All niches are usually trend-based, meaning they are popular for a short time and then those interested move on to the next niche. When researching the niche, you may have found online magazines, newsletters, and other materials written about the niche. Check to see if these online publications are still available and if they are still catering to the niche. If not, then the trend may be fading. Check bookstores and other places to see if any new materials have been written lately. Trends that are on the decline receive less attention than they once did, so if you have difficulty finding the niche only a few weeks after you found plenty of materials about it, then you know the niche is on the decline. INCREASED COMPETITION If you notice an increase in competition, you may want to start looking for a new niche. Even if the niche is still popular, increased competition will cut into your profits. While you don't have to shut down your site just yet, be prepared for a 101

decrease in sales. It may be subtle at first, but it will become more noticeable over time. Increased competition can also be a sign that the niche is on its way out. Those who want to come into the niche quickly and make a profit must know this also, or they wouldn't be wasting their time if the niche was already saturated. A saturated niche is not profitable for anyone for long, so be prepared to leave the niche and move on to the next one. ADVERTISERS SHOW LESS INTEREST Advertisers are in business to make money and they will follow the trends until they are no longer popular. Then they will turn their sights elsewhere. If you notice that the number of ads in magazines, trade papers, and other sources you used to find the niche has decreased or stayed the same, then the niche is probably on its way out. By acknowledging these warning signs, you can predict how long a niche will remain profitable. Remember that decreased sales seldom have anything to do with your marketing campaign or product. This is just how the niche operates. Chances are if you profit from a product, then it was beneficial to many people. This means that by providing information that people were looking for, you have fulfilled your end of the bargain and have the profits to show for it. 102

REDUCTION IN FORUM AND BLOG ACTIVITY A reduction in the number of comments found on forums and blogs that cater to the niche is another sign that people are losing interest in it. Pay attention to the number of new comments, repeat users, and the creation of new forums and blogs. If you are seeing fewer forums and blogs being created, then interest in the niche is slowing down. Reduced comments and postings can occur for several reasons. If there is more than one product available, people may have found all the information they have been searching for a no longer rely on the forums for tips and advice. Or there are fewer people who want information about the niche simply because they are not interested in it. Another reason could be that there are too many blogs and forums available, so those interested in the niche are too spread out for you to get a good read on the situation. If you are curious about the interest level for the niche, you should contact webmasters and forum moderators. They may be able to give you additional information about the number of people who visit their sites and tell you if people are losing interest in the niche. PREPARING FOR A CHANGE 103

Depending on how you feel about the research process, you may want to jump right in and begin a new niche marketing project. While this may feel like starting all over again, remember the profits you made from all of your hard work. This should be enough to keep you going. Many people find that they really enjoy learning about new ideas, concepts, hobbies, and trends that are out there. And because you will be filling a need, you can feel good about helping another person by giving them access to the information you have compiled. When preparing to find a new niche, revisit past chapters of this book for inspiration, tips, and practical advice so you can have the same success you did the first time around. 104
