Internal PREDICT seminar 6 COMPLETE framing the display study DG ENTR and IPTS/JRC EU ICT industry competitiveness depends (partly) on its ability to grasp opportunities created by emerging disruptive technologies Analyze prospects of success of the EU ICT industry innovations regarding technologies that will have a disruptive impact Three steps: Identified emerging ICT technologies with potential disruptive characteristics Analyse their potential: further technological development and market success, Assess the competitiveness of the European ICT industry Technologies analysed 2008: Web /2009: Displays (OLED and e-paper), RFID (Item-level and mass transportation) 2009/2010: Emerging (1) Robotics, (2) games software, (3) embedded software technologies
Internal PREDICT seminar 7 Display technologies - Asia and LCD dominance Rapidly growing industry, 100 billion global market, growing at about 10 % per year, driven by transition to FPD Asian suppliers dominate European companies behind, although more competitive in some vertical niches (e.g. displays for avionics) some parts of the value chain (e.g. research, supply of material and equipment) Market dominated by LCD Source: isuppli
Internal PREDICT seminar 8 Disruptions as European opportunity? Rapid technological development improved resolution, colours, response time, viewing angles, power consumption lower cost etc. but also new features (paper-like, 3D, touch-sensitive etc) Number of emerging technologies : OLEDs, touch-screen displays, flexible displays/electronic paper, near-eye displays, head-up displays and 3D technologies Could disrupt the current industrial structure Typically niche applications, offers a unique performance or cost advantage, to later invade also mainstream applications. (OLEDs?) New technologies may also open up completely new markets which the incumbent technology could not address. (e-paper?) Provide opportunities for European players to enter and strengthen their position in displays.
Internal PREDICT seminar 9 Objective of the study To assess Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLEDs) and Electronic Paper (e-paper) could be disruptive, and how well placed EU firms would be to take advantage of such disruptions. SCF Associates
Internal PREDICT seminar 10 Three major questions Are OLEDs/e-paper disruptive? How is Europe positioned to take advantage? How can policy support?
Internal PREDICT seminar 11 Statements by Jan Blochwitz-Nimoth, CSO, Director, NOVALED AG OLED display is clearly a disruptive technology. Not as disruptive as the first flat panel technology (LCD) was at its time but with the best combination of performance (best mix of LCD and plasma properties), manufacturing costs (less assembly needed than LCD) and power efficiency (due to only create the light when its needed). But OLED will not be the technology that wins the whole value chain of flat panel displays back to Europe. At least high resolution OLED displays are based on active matrix backplanes - here Europe has lost the race. However, Europe is well positioned as technology provider (Novald), equipment (Aixtron, Applied Materials Germany...) and materials (Merck, BASf, Novaled) supplier. On the other side of the value chain Europe is well positioned in displays for special, car, and industrial applications using today LCD displays from Asia. The only chance to cover the whole value chain OLED display in Europe might have is via organic backplane technology. This is closely related to all e-paper developments. On the long run it may be possible to drive OLEDs by organictfts, but a lot of research work is required (good area!). Novaled and others clearly are committed to extend their supplier position to the world wide OLED market: display and lighting. Synergies between display and lighting are very helpful here. We can use in Europe the same synergies when thinking about production of (niche) display products: that can be done in manufacturing equipment (for OLED deposition) which is to be installed for lighting application. One (only) needs to purchase backplanes form Asia (e.g. Taiwan in this respect, not the preferred business model of Asian companies but possible) and coat the white OLED and the colour filter here in Europe. Surely this makes no sense for standard TV displays but for all special applications. That is one of the reasons why we push in AMAZOLED to work on the white+color filter approach. EU can support here by further fund related R&D projects and by pushing the synergies between OLED display and lighting.
