On one side, silicones can be used as pressure sensitive adhesives (PSAs) and on the other side paradoxically they can also be used as release coatings. Silicones are used as silicone release coatings in a wide range of applications. This can be the more traditional applications of label, hygiene and tape release, to less well known applications such as composite release and food release. Even in the well-established applications, where there is constant pressure to improve performance, there are a number of new developments to meet the new performance challenges (such as flat release and slippery release). In terms of silicone pressure sensitive adhesives there is a growing market for silicones PSAs where high temperature and stable adhesion performance is required. Shorter delivery times, more flexible logistics solutions and efficient use of raw materials improve the sustainability performance of the local converters. Better availability of a local high tech glassine gives converters the option to replace polycoated kraft papers with a more sustainable and more performance driven option.
