Mathematics Alignment Lesson Grade Quarter Day 8 Common Core State Standard(s).OA. Generate two numerical patterns using two given rules. Identify apparent relationship between corresponding terms. Form ordered pairs consisting of corresponding terms from the two patterns and graph the ordered pairs on a coordinate plane. For example, given the rule Add and the starting number 0, and given the rule Add and the starting number 0, generate terms in the resulting sequences, and observe that the terms in one sequence are twice the corresponding terms in the other sequence. Explain informally why this is so. Standards for Mathematical Practice Standard 7 Look for and make use of structure Materials Needed: Transparencies/Blackline Masters- Spring Carnival Planning, Instructions for th Grade Committees Spring Carnival Planning Blackline Masters Committee Information sheets ( for each of the 7 committees), Describing the Patterns (one per group 7 copies) Assessment Ask students What is the relationship between the data provided by the PTA and the patterns you ve created? Homework Blackline Master, Numerical Patterns Journal Prompt Alignment Lesson Planning a Spring Carnival (Day of ). Display Transparency, Spring Carnival Planning and explain to students that the school PTA needs help planning the upcoming Spring Carnival. Explain to students that the PTA wants to compare the cost of using a party planner to the cost of having th grade committees plan the carnival.. Complete the Spring Carnival Planning chart and describe the patterns the students notice. Discuss the relationship between the cost of using the party planner and using th grade committees. Once you ve finished, students should reach the conclusion that it is much cheaper for the PTA to hire the th grade committees to plan the carnival.. Now that the th grade committees are in charge of planning the carnival, display Transparency/Blackline Master, Instructions for th Grade Committees Spring Carnival Planning. Review the instructions with students (for the overall project and for today, Day ) and then split students into the 7 committees (groups).. Have students work in their committees based on the directions discussed in Step. Circulate while students are working to verify that they have realized the correct numerical patterns and to guide the patterns they create. Also, guide students as they work to describe the patterns and relationships that exist. Students record their descriptions on the Blackline Master, Describing the Patterns.. At the close of the lesson, allow students to share how creating charts can help you see numerical patterns easier. Note: Students will need the Spring Carnival Planning chart as well as their committee s sheet for the remaining days. Source: Teacher Created Vocabulary None
Transparency/Blackline Master Grade Day 8 Spring Carnival Planning Standard.OA. Options for Party Planners Time (in hours) Party Planner Fee th Grade Committee Fee* $ $8 $ $ $8 $ $8 8 $9 0 $0 $8 * to be donated back to the PTA to save for th grade end-of-year activities. Complete the table. Describe the patterns in the space below.
Answer Key Grade Day 8 Standard.OA. Spring Carnival Planning - Answer Key Options for Party Planners Time (in hours) Party Planner Fee th Grade Committee Fee $ $8 $ $ $8 $ $7 $8 8 $9 $ 0 $0 $80 $9 $8. Complete the table. Describe the patterns in the space below. The party planner fee increased $ from hour to hours; this means that the fee for the party planner is $ per hour. To determine the cost for the party planner for any number of hours, you would just multiply the number of hours times $. The cost for the th grade committees is $8. I know this because the cost increased $8 from hour to hours. To determine the cost for the party planner for any number of hours, you would just multiply the number of hours times $8. It costs ½ times as much to have a party planner as it does to use the th grade committee. I know this because for hour the party planner charges $. For hour, the th grade committees charge $8. To compare the two amounts, I divided $ by $8 and got. which means the party planner costs ½ times as much. I can check this by dividing each fee for the party planner by. and I would get the th grade committees fee. This shows that it is cheaper for the PTA to have the th grade committees do the work instead of hiring the party planner again.
Transparency/Blackline Master Grade Day 8 Standard.OA. Instructions for th Grade Committees Spring Carnival Planning Last year, the PTA used a party planner to plan the Spring Carnival. Not only did they pay a lot for the help of the party planner, but they also felt that they didn t get the best deals on everything they needed. They need your help to make this year s Spring Carnival less expensive, but still fun-filled! The PTA needs 7 separate committees and have included very specific requirements for your work. For each committee, the PTA has included several charts containing information on cost from last year s Spring Carnival. This includes costs for certain items the PTA purchased and cost (in dollars or tickets) for various items available during the carnival. The PTA would like each committee to try to find a better offer for each service and item needed for the carnival. The costs will need to remain reasonable and will be compared to the costs from last year. You will work on this project for days and then present your ideas on the th day. Your presentation will need to be supported with data tables, graphs and your descriptions and comparisons of the data. Your presentation will need to persuade the PTA that the options you present are less expensive, but still fun. Day - Work with your committee to fill in the missing information in the data tables provided by the PTA. As a committee, create a better offer for each service and/or item needed. Lastly, describe the patterns you notice in the tables provided by the PTA and the patterns in the tables you create. Discuss any relationships that exist between the two. Day Work with your committee to create graphs based on your data tables from yesterday. You should include a line representing the cost from last year and the projected cost with your better offer. Describe the graphs and the relationships between the costs. Day Work with your committee to complete your descriptions of the graphs and the relationships between the costs. Prepare your presentation. Keep in mind, you should use the tables and graphs you created in your presentation. You should also make clear the relationships between last year s cost and this year s cost as you work to persuade the PTA that you ve found less expensive options. Day Individual committees present their findings to the class. Other committees make notes about the change in cost and ideas presented by each committee. Your teacher will serve as a PTA representative to decide if the committee created fun-filled, less expensive options for the Spring Carnival.

Answer Key Grade Day 8 Standard.OA. Name: Date: Numerical Patterns Journal Prompt Answer Key How can numerical patterns be used when planning for a party or big event? Give specific examples to support your answer. Numerical patterns come in very handy when you are planning a party or big event. Usually when you are planning a party, you have to buy numerous packages of things like paper plates, napkins, etc. Using numerical patterns makes finding your total cost easy. For example, if you know that a package of paper plates costs $.0 and you need 0 paper plates, you can use a numerical pattern to determine the cost. You will need 0 packages of paper plates (since 0 is ten times as big as ) so you need to multiply the cost ($.0) by 0. Your answer would be $.00. You could also create a table that would look like this to find the cost: Packages of Paper Plates $.0 $0.0 $.90 $.0 $.0 $.80 7 $7.0 8 $.0 9 $ $.00
