1. Feed the Flock: You have $15 to buy lunch for family, which items will you purchase. Give calculator if they need it. Have them explain what they purchased and why. Is their meal healthy? (See printable pg 6 in this document) 2. Confessions Homeschooler Skip Counting Mazes 3. Weighing objects: Gather various objects from around your home. Estimate weight of each item. Using small scale, weigh each item and record real weight next to estimated weight. Just for fun, include feathers and rocks of the same weight to show that for example 1lb is 1lb no matter what the object is. You may want to have them estimate how much they think 4 apples will weigh. Is it more than a pound, less than a pound or equal to a pound? Will 4 oranges weigh the same or more? Compare and contrast foods, estimating and recording real values. (See printable pg 7 in this document) 4. Liquid Measuring/Volume: Gather a variety of different containers to see which one holds the most or least amount of water. I.e.: sauce pan, soda bottle, cup, mug, skillet, soda-pop can etc. Using a standard measurement of water for all items, guess if it will overflow, will it fit? Record actual answers, discuss which holds more. (See printable pg 8 in this document) 5. Liquid Measurement 2: In preparation purchase 1 Gallon of Milk, 2 Half Gallons, 4 quarts, 8 pint containers. (can do gather materials over time) Fill Gallon container, then show how it will fill each of the other sets. 6. Tape Measure It (See printable on pg 9 in this document) 7. Figure out the square foot of room in your home. (See printable pg 11 in this doc.) 8. Loving Living Math: Whose Pet Is It? 9. Add It Math Game 10. Cookies fraction game. (See printable on pg 11 in this document) 11. Subtract It! Math Game 12. How much money in the box? Fill your workbox with a handful of money, a small white board, and dry-erase marker. Have student count money, then write correct amount on white board. 13. Make the Date 14. Domino Math (See printable on pg 14 in this document) 15. Loving Living Math: Popcorn Puzzlers 16. Domino Parking lot Math 17. Logic Links 18. Building Skills: Lego s 19. Add It Math Game 20. Mazes: Pick an age appropriate maze for your student to work on. 21. Daily Learning Notebooks 22. Dice Math Addition (See printable on pg 15 in this document) Copyright 2010 Erica Made Designs, LLC. 3
23. iphone: Logic and Math Games i.e. Move it, Math Bingo, Rocket Math, Jewel Bling 24. Estimation Jar: Fill jar with objects, provide paper and pencil for students to estimate how many objects are in the jar. Give prize for winner. Object suggestions: Beans, Jelly Beans, Gummy Bears, M&Ms, Gumballs, Counting Bears, marbles, suckers, etc. 25. Greater than, less than 26. Rounding: Teach 1.99 = $2.00 and so on. Label several items with $x.99 prices. Give students monopoly money, allow them to purchase items. Have them round to decide what they can afford to purchase. 27. Guess my number: Have child guess number. Give them clues like higher or lower. Once they ve got the concept, let them pick a number and you do the guessing! 28. Rush Hour Jr 29. Unifix Sudoku 30. Dice Math Subtraction (See printable on pg 16 in this document) 31. Shapes: Pattern Blocks 32. Place Value Game: Build a number using number cards, then discuss which number is in each place; hundreds, tens, and units. (See printable pg 17 in this document) 33. Grocery Game 2: Figure price per pound and price per unit. Take a field trip to the grocery store. Let your child measure apples, oranges, and other fruits. Write how many pounds they are purchasing. Once home figure out what the price per pound was for the item, then figure out price per unit. What was the difference? Can you estimate how many items you can buy based on price per pound? 34. Blokus Game 35. Grocery Game 3: Make a shopping list for each child (I divide things I plan to purchase between my kids) Let them find, then check off each item on their list. Help them to choose the best value for their money. (See printable list on pg 18) 36. Logic: Tangram Cards. 37. Grocery Game 4: Shapes take a trip around the grocery store or your home and try to find items that are cylinders, cubes, rectangular boxes, cones. Discuss properties of objects, will they stack well? Why would we care if objects stack well? Helps with storage, more space = more product. This is helpful for the grocery store and our pantry! 38. Subtract It Math Game 39. Fraction Magnets 40. Grocery Game 5: Pantry Organizing. After a trip to the grocery store, have your children help you put items away. Explain why we put things where we do. Mine is organized by shelves, so the top shelf is breakfast food such as cereal, granola bars etc. The next shelf might be canned goods. One shelf might be crackers, snacks, etc. Which objects go in the refrigerator or freezer? Do we put fruit in the meat drawer? Why not? This will help them develop logic, classifying and reasoning skills. 41. Making Patterns: Make patterns using beads, colored objects, dominoes, pattern blocks or any other object your child likes. The older the child the more complex the pattern you can require. For younger children try lacing beads. Older girls can use real beads to create necklaces and bracelets. Boys can use matchbox cars, colored rocks, etc. Have them estimate how many of each item they will need to complete their project. Copyright 2010 Erica Made Designs, LLC. 4
42. Color Cube Activity Cards and Blocks 43. Puzzle Day: Pick a challenging puzzle from your stash! 44. Calendar: Countdown with your child to a specific upcoming date such as their birthday or a holiday. Each day make note of how many days/months remain. 45. Allowance or chore system: Let your child earn tickets or money for chores completed. Allow them to use some of the money for purchasing items, some of it for savings, and some for tithing. Help them to save for items they want, keep talking to them about how much more they need so they don t lose interest. 46. AnimaLogic by FatBrain Toys: A logic game with 60 full color puzzles to solve, great for building sequencing and logic skills. Copyright 2010 Erica Made Designs, LLC. 5
You have $15 to buy lunch for a family. Which items will you purchase, how much do you need? Things to consider: Is your meal healthy? Will it be well received? Is it cost effective to serve this meal? How many people? What is your meal plan? Item Price/Unit Units Needed Total Cost Budget Remaining Did you stay on budget? Yes No If NO why? Was your meal healthy? Did everyone like the meal? Would you serve this again? Copyright 2010 Erica Made Designs, LLC. 6
Gather several different types of objects. Before weighing, estimate how much each item will weigh and record it on the spreadsheet below. Then record actual weight. Note the difference if any. Compare objects such as rocks and feathers. See if you can make the two items weigh the same based on how many you add to the scale. Item Estimated Weight Actual Weight Difference Observations Copyright 2010 Erica Made Designs, LLC. 7
Gather a variety of different containers. Estimate which will hold the most and least. Record any observations such as overflow. Item Will the water fit? Will it overflow? Actual Results Observations Copyright 2010 Erica Made Designs, LLC. 8
Tape Measure It! Use tape measure to record lengths of objects below. Graph their length on the chart on the following page. Copyright 2010 Erica Made Designs, LLC. 9
Measure It Graph Graph items measured on previous page. Which is the longest? Which is the shortest? Copyright 2010 Erica Made Designs, LLC. 10
Square Footage of Room Draw Map of room below. Measure the length and width of the room in feet. Multiply these two numbers together to get the square feet of the room. For example, if your room is 10 feet by 12 feet, the square footage would be 120 square feet. For extra fun, gather prices for carpet. Make sure to include cost of carpet padding in total cost. Area = Length x Width Length of room in feet: Width of room in feet: x = (length) (width) (Square Feet) Carpet Cost per sq ft: x Sq ft of room = Add Padding Cost per sq ft: x Sq ft of room = Total Cost: (If you want to be accurate, add 10% to total carpet sq footage for waste.)
