2 Ultra Deepwater Trends Drive Technology Farther Operators are pioneerg deep-offshore exploration and development projects water depths up to 12,000 ft. These wells represent technological challenges combg deepwater environments and creased total drillg depth. Safety and efficiency are key to project success particularly durg completion and tervention which require settg and runng larger and heavier casg strgs with hook loads approachg or exceedg 2.5 million pounds (1,250 short tons). Operational Challenge From Drill Pipe to Landg Strgs Traditionally, thick-walled drill pipe was used as landg strg order to perform completion and tervention operations shallow waters. In deeper waters however, these conventional landg strgs cannot withstand higher hook loads due to a phenomenon called slip crushg. This phenomenon is a major problem which needs to be addressed when designg landg strgs and slips 1. As a result of biaxial loads, stress concentrations may damage, and some cases even crush, pipe, hence reducg the axial load ratg of the landg strg. Beyond Friction Welded Landg Strgs One of the current operational challenges with existg friction welded landg strgs is lked to the positiong of the slips sufficiently far from both the weld area and the Heat Affected Zone. The limited length available for settg the slips requires additional time for proper positiong and set up. This is particularly problematic when usg extended slip designs, newly troduced to the dustry. Vallourec has developed an novative forgg process to produce seamless forged landg strgs. 1 Slips are used to grip pipe on the rotary table. The make-up torque to be applied, however, is with the same range as what current make-up tongs can handle. For this reason, the tool-jot area of the landg strg jot is submitted to additional heat treatment, order to brg the mimum yield strength of the tool jot back to a lower value (135 KSI). 4 Product Qualification The design performance has been assessed usg: Spiri Rehold Equation: the most widely accepted formula to predict slip crushg Fite Element Analysis on the slip areas, the elevator shoulders and the connection threads A full-scale physical trial performed jotly with a renowned slip manufacturer Germany, usg a specifically designed pullg unit. The design has been tested under 2.5 million pounds (1,250 short tons) and a load of up to 4.4 million pounds (exceedg the yield tension of the thick walled tube section million pounds). Our full scale test results have been compared to those obtaed with the Fite Element Analysis and have confirmed the expected performances of the CrushFree Landg Strg prototypes under 2.5 million pounds load capacity.
