End of life vehicles in Nigeria Nigeria is a huge market for endof-life-vehicles, which are sold for dumping prices. These vehicles are often smuggled from Europe or North America, in over 1400 illegal routes to Nigeria and Benin. Picture source: Source:
Quantity of vehicles There is no exact number of vehicles registrated. However, official statistics from Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) and Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) indicate that over 500, 000 units of vehicles terminate life annually in Nigeria used cars and new cars were imported in 2012, ELVs per year (??? Numbers have to be proofed) Picture source: Source:
Recycling possibility In Nigeria there is a huge informal sector with highly educated technicians and engineers, with an impressive ability for repairing used electronic equipment and for local resale, which has been declared as unresuable goods from Europe or North America. Good basis for collecting scrap and ELVs, how is the struicture of the sector? Are they well organized? 24 JICA Japan International Cooperation Agency Picture source: JICA is an organization which helps local governments in planning projects in environmental protection of social impacts in developing countries, in conformity with their own guidelines. With their projects they try to guarantee justice and to reduce the distance between poor and rich people. Ongoing Project about ELV recycling in Nigeria, who is involved Source: JAPAN INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION AGENCY (JICA) - GUIDELINES FOR ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL CONSIDERATION
Demand Europe: Future Cars (less energy consumption, but high amounts of Non-Recyclables) LCD Screen Europium Yttrium Cerium Glass & Mirrors Polishing Powder Cerium UV Cut Glas Cerium Hybrid Electric Motor and Generator Neodymium Praseodymium Dysprosium Terbium Serviceseiten50plus.de Diesel Fuel Additive Lanthanum Cerium 25+ Electric Motors Throughout Vehicle Neodymium (NdFeB) Magnets Catalytic Converter Cerium/Zirconium Lanthanum Hybrid NiMH Battery Lanthanum Cerium 25
Challenges: Today and tomorrow * End-of-Life vehicles (ELVs) are waste (dangerous with liquids) and should be treated carefully export to Africa with no permit is illegal ELVs contain high amounts of resources (and hazardous substances) which are not renewable Mio. of cars are shipped as waste and used cars from Europe to Africa: Recycling facilities should be in place Prerequisite: Legal framework is necessary because of the need to improve standards (authorities have to monitor and control strandards) Cooperations are necessary between countries with high and low standards Educational programmes have to be developed informal sector should be included! For investments there is a need of further informations, like market studies... 26
