3 The National Steel Policy-2017 Summary :- India has a vision to produce 300MT of steel making capacity by (500MT production per annam) It speaks about availability/supliability of Iron ore by detailed exploration. To make steel making competitive, it is important to provide constant raw material and use of low grade ore by proper blended product for long time. R& D will facilitate the establishment of Steel Research and Technology Mission of India (SRTMI) 3

4 Threshold Value of mineral Objective :- Objective is to set the threshold value of the mineral based on the beneficiability and marketability for a given region below which a mineral obtained can be discarded as waste. With a commitment to zero waste - mining to prevent sub-optimal, unscientific mining and for sustaining mining operations for intergeneration's. 4

5 Threshold Value Notification of IBM In case of Iron ore, the Threshold value notified by IBM are as under ; In 1990 A. Goa Iron ore I. Hematitic ore 55% Fe (Both Lumpy and Powdery ore II. Siliceous ore - 40% Fe. B. Bellary Hospet region 58% Fe (Provisional). Threshold values Notification Dt 16 th October I. Hematitic Ore - 45 Fe% (Min) II. Hematitic Siliceous ores ( for ores of Goa region) 35% Fe (min). IBM Internal Circular No 3/2010 No. M /1/2009-CCOM Dt: 14/07/2010 (Exploration of G1/G2 under UNFC to be considered for Siliceous ore) i) Hematitic iron ore (both lumpy & powdery - 45% Fe(min) ii) Siliceous ore 35% Fe. We have conducted detailed exploration and discovered additional reserve and resources which includes Million Tonnes ( possibility of finding more with extensive exploration in progress) of siliceous ore average grade of 39 % Fe declared in MAMP

7 Siliceous Ore Vedanta Limited vision is to do more scientific and sustainable mining and working relentlessly towards optimum utilization of minerals based on the principles of conservation and scientific development. With a commitment to do Zero waste mining, to prevent sub-optimal and un scientific mining in line with national Mineral and Steel Policy. As Bench scale beneficiation study on High Silica Iron ore are carried in Modern Mineral processing laboratory and results are encouraging. The material can be upgraded from 40% Fe to 60% Fe with alumina (Al203) < 1% and Silica(Sio2) 12% with weight recovery of 55%. 10 Suggestions :- In the interest of conservation of mineral based of the principle of scientific and sustainable and zero waste mining concept. we submit the following suggestions. Siliceous ore available along with Hematitic ore, If thresholds are not changed it will be excavated and dumped as waste. Hence in Karnataka and other states Minerals are not conserved optimally. Siliceous raw material Acts as precious component at Steel mills due to less in LOI, siliceous ore in certain cases substitute for quartzite and also due to low Al2O3 (which is disadvantage for BF) can largely be used for blending with normal ore. IBM internal circular No 3/2010 No. M-11012/1/2009-CCOM Dt: 14/07/2010 shows that exploration to be done to revise the estimation under G1/G2 stages of United Nations Framework Classification (UNFC) Suggestions:- Considering Zero waste mining to prevent sub-optimal & un scientific mining and considering the conservation of mineral in it s true sense. Threshold value for Hematitic Iron ore should be maintained at +45% Fe as it is. Threshold value for Hematitic Siliceous ore at 35%Fe (Already available for Goan Ore) should be applicable for Karnataka. 10
