Department of Chemical Engineering Polytechnic School University of São Paulo SEPARATION OF POLYMERS ABS AND HIPS FROM WASTE TÍTULO ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT (WEEE) USING FROTH Autor (no caso de Tese e Dissertação) FLOTATION
Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment (WEEE), Extractive Metallurgy Laboratory From UK Directive of Environmental Agency: The amount of WEEE generated in the Community is growing rapidly. The content of hazardous components in electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) is a major concern during the waste management phase and recycling of WEEE is not undertaken to a sufficient extent.
Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Extractive Metallurgy Laboratory Examples Mobile phones Computers Televisions Printers Tools Toys Refrigerators Microwave oven Audio systems Washing machines
Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Extractive Metallurgy Laboratory Generation in the World circa 50 million ton/year The increase in generation is 3 times higher than the other kinds of MSW
Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Extractive Metallurgy Laboratory Generation in the World Amount of de PC s in the World millions millions millions billions Only in Brazil, about tons of mobile phones were discarded in 2011.
Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Extractive Metallurgy Laboratory Araújo, Waste Management, 2011
Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Extractive Metallurgy Laboratory Components Printed circuit boards, batteries, LCD, wires, magnets, keyboards, metallic case, polymeric case,... Elements and chemicals substances Metals, ceramics and polymers
Plastic Waste Extractive Metallurgy Laboratory -The most common plastics in WEEE are the ABS (acrylonitrile-butadieneestyrene) and HIPS (high impact polystyrene). -ABS and HIPS are difficult to separate: they have similar specific weights. -Froth flotation may be possible by selective wetting agents.
Objective Recycling, Waste Treatment and Extractive Metallurgy Laboratory Objetives In this work, froth flotation was used to separate ABS and HIPS mixtures. The experimental work tried to use selective wetting agents to depress the plastic.
-The ABS and HIPS were comminuted using a knife mill. Y -The experiments were conducted in a glass column: 105 cm high and 8 cm in diameter giving a volumetric capacity of 3 dm 3. -A ceramic sparger plate at the base of the cell: produce gas bubbles with compressed air (3.0 dm 3 /min). -The floated plastic were mechanically removed after a 10 minutes period. Men
Selective wetting agents:: -Ethanol -Acetic Acid Men
ABS recovery using ethanol solution % Ethanol (% weight) % Recovery ABS (sunk) % Purity ABS (Recovery) o Best recovery was achieved using a solution with 20 wt% of ethanol. o ABS recovery: 96% o purity: 98%
HIPS recovery using ethanol solution % Ethanol (% weight) % Recovery HIPS (Float) % Purity HIPS (Recovery) o Best recovery was achieved using a solution with 20 wt% of ethanol. o HIPS recovery: 98% o purity: 96%
ABS recovery using acetic acid solution % Acetic Acid (% weight) % Recovery ABS (sunk) % Purity ABS (Recovery) o Best recovery was achieved using a solution with 40 wt% of acetic acid. o ABS recovery: 96% o purity: 83%
HIPS recovery using acetic acid solution 100 as 80 % Acetic Acid (% weight) % Recovery HIPS (Float) % Purity HIPS (Recovery) o Best recovery was achieved using a solution with 40 wt% of acetic acid. o HIPS recovery: 96% o purity: 86%
Contact Ang. ( ) ABS & HIPS wettability in ethanol solution Ethanol (%weight) ABS HIPS
Contact Ang. ( ) ABS & HIPS wettability in acetic acid solution Acetic Acid (%weight) ABS HIPS
Recycling, Waste Treatment and Extractive Metallurgy Laboratory o 20 %wt ethanol solution showed the best result considering purity and recovery when compared to any studied acetic acid solution. o Increasing the concentration of ethanol in the solution, the contact angle between the solution and the studied polymers (ABS and HIPS) decreases. o The increase of acetic acid concentration in the solution decreases the contact angle between the solution and the studied polymers (ABS and HIPS). o HIPS started to present depression for contact angles higher than about 50.
