1 Dr. Dieter Brodalla, ESTAL Is ESTAL prepared for the future? Dr. Dieter Brodalla gave a report about the activities undertaken by the association in the past 2 years in order to better prepare the organization and its members for future challenges. He informed the audience about the new organization and ESTAL s efforts to develop a global cooperation network. After presenting the new members of the European association, he appealed to all the members of ESTAL (surface finishers, suppliers, national associations, associate and sustaining members) to be active in the various subcommittees in order to benefit from the information exchange offered by the association s network and to contribute to the improved image of aluminium.

2 Dr. Andreas Postler GDA Development in Europe s aluminium and construction markets Dr. Andreas Postler presented several economic indicators in Europe and gave an outlook on the building and construction market, where economic trends in Southern European countries play a key role. The presentation explored the regional developments in the construction as well as in the aluminium semis sector and gave some ideas about short-term prospects.

3 MO Panam, President of Qualicoat The value of Qualicoat Mo Panam gave a review of the history, the development and the organization of the quality label organization for coatings and explained the audience which are the Qualicoat benefits. Customers and specifiers receive coated products that meet clearly defined quality and performance criteria. Qualicoat defines comprehensive quality requirements and independently monitors their compliance by licensed plants worldwide. As a result, purchasers of coated aluminium receive a premium grade product delivering longterm value, sustainability, with good quality and peace of mind.

4 Modar al Mekdad, QMEA Aluminium Surface Treatments and Market Trends in the Middle East Modar al Mekdad explained the role and the organization of QMEA, the Quali Middle East association, located in Dubai and described the challenges faced by surface finishers and suppliers of surface treatment products due to the climatic conditions in the Gulf region. He presented many innovative and gigantic building projects realized in the Middle East, which let the audience speechless

5 Arvind Kumar, ZAK Trading A collaborative venture for Quality in Indian AluminiumSurface Finish Industry Starting with a quick presentation of India and the Indian market, illustrated with a quick video film with beautiful pictures, Arvind Kumar explained the current opportunities of the Indian surface finish market and presented the newly created association Qualindal. He talked about his vision for the future ESTAL and Qualindal relationship and explained the 3 Cs; i.e. Challenges, Common opportunites and Commercial success.:

6 Herman Terryn Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) Understanding Mechanisms of Cr 6+ free Conversion Coatings Prof. Terryn informed the congress participants about the research currently done at VUB and TUDelft on several important Al surface finishing topics such as influence of pre-cleaning steps on interfacial properties, formation of Chromium free conversion coatings, formation of anodized layers, development of new self healing organic coatings up to a new generation atmospheric plasma coatings. His presentation focused on the mechanism of conversion coatings on Aluminium, for which research shows that there is a clear relation with pre-cleaning steps and the initiation and growth of the layer on the pre-cleaned aluminum alloy. These types of effects are believed to be very crucial for the success of these Chromium free alternatives.

7 Dr. Axel Schmitz, Vulkan Inox Kinetic satination of Aluminum surfaces Nowadays, anodized aluminium components are used in a wide range of areas where the aluminium look needs to be retained and corrosion protection is required for sensitive aluminium surfaces. Dr. Axel Schmitz explained how the blasting process applies small blasting particles to the aluminium substrate surface by compressed air or by wheel blasting machines in the industrial sector of profiled section production. The suggested stainless steel blasting abrasive mixture removes pressing marks and any surface scratching with low blasting abrasive costs in comparison to the expensive etching process.

8 Timur Ulucak, Qualanod President The quality label organisaiton Qualanod Timur Ulucak gave an overview of the quality label organization for anodizing, Qualanod, explained the purpose of the technical specifications and the advantage of holding the Qualanod licence. After giving details about the inspection procedure, he showed the future prospects and possible developments of the quality label for anodizing

9 Werner Mader, GDA International Anodizing standards Werner Mader informed the audience that a series of ISO standards testing methods had been published recently. Now worldwide uniform standards for testing the properties are available, which however do not apply to quantitative properties. The quantitative properties of the oxide film are determined according to the requirements arising from the application and the place of use and are often agreed between anodizer and customer, consequently can greatly vary from application to application and from climate to climate. Therefore it is important to know which elements should be defined in a specification, and this is the purpose of information standards.

10 Hans Jürg Alfort, GSB International Why GSB International? A safe and sustainable use of Aluminum in Building and Construction requires a careful and efficient use of resources. This can be ensured by a close and comprehensive cooperation of all process partners. Ac cording to Hans-Jürg Alfort, from a technology point of view of Coated Aluminium GSB has started to establish a network between semi producer, pretreatment supplier, material suppliers and coater with the essential benefit of reacting on upcoming changes fast. This is a main contribution to ensure a future for the players of the markets.

11 Henk Jan Stuiver, DSM The importance of powder in reducing the carbon footprint DSM Coating Resins is a leading specialty resins supplier for the coatings industry and part of the Performance Materials cluster of Royal DSM N.V. Henk-Jan. Stuiver explained how DSM Coating Resins develops and supply polyester resins for high performance, and high quality powder coatings that are cost effective and energy efficient. DSM is looking to improve the CO 2 footprint of polyester powder coatings further by lowering curing temperatures, reducing layer thickness and alternative systems to replace cross-linkers, which are harmful to human health and the environment.

12 Marco Georgiou, CRU Group The Global extrusion market In his presentation, Marco Georgiou discussed the world market outlook for extrusions including the challenges and opportunities facing extruders in Europe. He gave a review of the developments in regional extrusions demand by sector and some information on the prices and trends in global trade of extruded products as well as on the prices for basic extrusion shapes and regional billet premiums together with their key cost indicators.

13 Simon Meirsschaut, ESTAL Technical Coordinator ESTAL and the Challenges to the Surface Treatment on Aluminium as a result of European legislation Simon Meirsschaut showed how ESTAL defends the interests of its members at international level with examples of activities undertaken due to new or future EU legislations, like for instance the REACH legislation which threatens to ban the use of some substances utilized in aluminum surface treatment in Europe. Further he addressed the legislation on nanomaterials, the future revision of the reference documents for Best Available Technique for surface treatment and the ecodesign directive. Simon Meirsschaut showed how important it is for ESTAL to liaise with other European industry organizations and to communicate up and down the supply chains with and within the national associations.

14 Tom Hauge, Hydro Aluminium MM CTS Typical surface defects on anodized profiles In his presentation, Tom Hauge presented typical surface defects that are mainly based on defects originating from the anodizing process. He demonstrated how defects generated in the extrusion process revealed during anodizing and also mentioned the defects generated during the polishing processes. Besides, he discussed the defects generated during anodising, which are, however, linked with the profile quality.

15 Ernst Weigl, Piesslinger GmbH Cleaning of coated and anodised profiles Over time, surface elements that have been anodised or coated to the highest quality standard are subject to pollution which can affect their decorative appearance. Ernst Weigel showed that, if surfaces are to be maintained appropriately, they should be cleaned following set guidelines at least twice a year and more frequently with increasing levels of environmental stress. To guarantee an adequate cleaning of powder coated and anodised surfaces of aluminium facades, a specification should be agreed upon and only special y developed cleaning products should be used.

16 Michael Plate, Novelis Deutschland GmbH Anodizing for Architectural Applications An overview from an Al-producer s perspective Michael Plate addressed the various aluminium processes and the challenges encountered by an aluminium producer. He demonstrated how the various parameters may influence the quality of the anodizing process. After pointing out the differences between batch anodizing and continuous anodizing, he showed various building realizations which used various qualities of anodized aluminum.

17 Dr. Santiago Garcia, TU Delft Self healing coatings, one doesn t fit it all Dr. Santiago Garcia gave a report about the research done at the TU Delft about the aluminium coatings and their self healing properties. A coating system adds functionalities that the substrate does not have. An important and promising functionality is the self healing property of coating. Several self-healing strategies can be used for organic coatings. However the selection of the adequate self healing strategy depends on the coating type, its application and the type of damage. Many other coating functionalities such as color, brightness, wetting, adhesion, still need to be investigated.

18 Dr. Thomas Heusser, Audi Lightweight strategies in carbody construction and the impact to surface technologies In his presentation, Dr. Thomas Heusser highlighted the motivation of the car builder Audi to choose lightweight strategies. He explained the various levels of lightweight design to the audience, the physical challenges of the lightweight strategy and showed examples of their impact on the production and the surface technologies

19 Romuald Loegler, Atelier Loegler Magic aluminium Polish Style. Romuald Loegler, a renowned architect in Poland, has won numerous competitions in Poland and abroad, for a number of prestigious public buildings, such as the Jagiellonian University Library in Krakow, the Philharmonic Hall in ód, the Opera House in Krakow, or the Nordbahnhof in Berlin. In his presentation he gave us many illustrations of his buildings designed for institutions of higher education, secondary schools, banks, as well as commercial and residential buildings.
