5 5 MATERIALS OF CONSTRUCTION OPTIONS COMPOUNDS Wilden pumps use a variety of rubber compounds manufactured specifically for use as elastomers. These compounds consist of natural rubber and man-made additives to increase the compounds resistance to specific types of fluids. Diaphragms made of these compounds are all reinforced with a nylon fabric mesh which lends dimensional stability and strength to the compound. C -.0 C to 76.7 C SUITABLE APPLICATIONS An excellent general purpose material for use in non-aggressive applications such as water based slurries, well water or sea water. Exhibits excellent flex life and low cost. Excellent for applications involving petroleum/oil-based fluids such as leaded gasolines, fuel oils, non-synthetic hydraulic oils, kerosene, turpentines and motor oils. Excellent for use in applications requiring extremely cold temperatures. May also be used as a low cost alternative when pumping dilute acids or caustics. Excellent for use in applications requiring extremely hot temperatures. May also be used with aggressive fluids such as aromatic or chlorinated hydrocarbons and highly aggressive acids. Teflon would normally be used for these applications as its flex life is better than Viton however, in applications requiring a suction lift outside the range of Teflon, Viton will be the preferred option. Along with rubber compound elastomers, Wilden also use various thermoplastic elastomer compounds, listed below. These compounds are made entirely of man-made elements and are injection moulded to shape. They do not require reinforcing due to their inherent dimensional stability and tensile strength. C Geolast Red - C to C SUITABLE APPLICATIONS An excellent general purpose material for use in non-aggressive applications. Exhibits excellent flex life and durability. Wilden s most economical diaphragm. Also available as part of the EZ-Instal flex profile diaphragm line. Made of Santoprene, this material is an excellent low cost alternative to in many acidic and caustic applications such as sodium hydroxide, sulfuric or hydrochloric acids. Wil-Flex offers excellent abrasion resistance and durability at a cost comparable to Neoprene. Sanitary options include: full stroke length Integral Piston Diaphragms (IPD) and a sanitary material with a special profile allowing for an easy install. Made of Hytrel, Saniflex diaphragms exhibit excellent abrasion resistance, flex life and durability. This material is FDA approved for food processing applications. This outstanding general purpose diaphragm is also available as part of the Ez-Instal Flex-profile line. Equivalent to Nitrile (Buna-N) Geolast is an injection moulded material that is an excellent choice for applications requiring enhanced oil resistance. This material exhibits exceptional performance for a variety of fluids. ELASTOMERS Teflon is one of the most chemically inert man-made compounds known. Wilden engineers were the first to discover that by reinforcing a moulded Teflon diaphragm with concentric ribs they could control the flex pattern. The ribbed design extended the flex life 5 times longer than that of any other diaphragms. This mad the use of Teflon in diaphragm pumps cost effective, greatly expanding the range of applications where a diaphragm pump can be utilised. As it is not an elastic material, Teflon diaphragms require a rubber back-up diaphragm to provide flexibility and memory. COMPOUND COLOUR CODE TEMPERATURE LIMITS SUITABLE APPLICATIONS Teflon White -. C to. C Excellent choice when pumping highly aggressive fluids such as aromatic or chlorinated hydrocarbons, acids, caustics, ketones and acetates. 9 9 See How It Works Figure 1. Air supply is directed to the left air chamber behind diaphragm A. Diaphragm A is driven by compressed air away from the center section and toward the liquid chamber. The opposite diaphragm (diaphragm B) is pulled in by the common shaft. Diaphragm B is now on its suction stroke while diaphragm A is on its discharge stroke. The movement of diaphragm B toward the center block opens the bottom right check valve and closes the upper right check valve. This movement creates a vacuum within liquid chamber B. Atmospheric pressure forces fluid into the inlet manifold, past the lower right inlet check valve and into liquid chamber B. When the pressurized diaphragm A reaches its full stroke, the air distribution system redirects the air supply to the back side of diaphragm B. Figure. The pressurized air forces diaphragm B away from the center block and the common shaft pulls diaphragm A toward the center section. The air chamber on side A, exhausts its air to atmosphere. Diaphragm B is now beginning its discharge stroke, while diaphragm A is beginning its suction stroke. The movement of diaphragm B toward the center block, opens the bottom right check valve and closes the upper right check valve. Diaphragm A creates a vacuum that begins to open the inlet check valve (lower left) and closes the discharge check valve (upper left). Figure 3. These same hydraulic forces lift the discharge valve ball off its seat while the opposite discharge valve ball is forced onto its seat, forcing fluid to flow through the left side of the pump and out the discharge manifold. The movement of diaphragm A to the center block of the pump creates a vacuum within liquid chamber A. Atmospheric pressure forces fluid into the inlet manifold of the pump. The inlet valve ball is forced off its seat allowing the fluid to enter the right liquid chamber. As the pump reaches its original starting point, each diaphragm has gone through one suction and one discharge stroke. This movement constitutes one pumping cycle. Our electronic controllers automate your Wilden pump for batching and other electronically controlled dispensing applications. We can also create laminar process flow by eliminating pump pulsation, or control the liquid level within a system of process. WILDEN Wil-Gard The Wil-GardTM detects diaphragm failure at the source: the primary diaphragm, not at the air chamber or the air exhaust as other systems do. 36 BIOCOR The ALMATEC pump series BIOCOR is especially designed for sterile applications within the pharmaceutical, biotechnical and food industry. As demanded for in these applications all housing parts of the BIOCOR pumps have no horizontal areas and each pump comes with four ball lifting magnets, which magnetically lift the balls off their seats so the pump can be drained entirely without having to be dismounted. The three pump sizes B, B 3 and B achieve max. capacities of 3.5/7.5/17 m³/h (15./33/75 gpm) respectively and a max. discharge pressure of up to 7 bar (0 psig). The wetted housing parts are electro polished 316 L stainless steel with a surface roughness of 0. μm, and the centre block is made of conductive polyethylene. With a driving pressure of max. 7 bar (0 psig), the AH series of pumps build up a delivery pressure of 15 bar (1 psig) due to internal pressure boost. These genuine double-action pneumatic diaphragm pumps are available in three sizes with a maximum delivery volume of m³/h / 70 l/min / 1.5 gpm (AH 15), m³/h / 10 l/min / gpm (AH 5) and m³/h / 330 l/min / 7 gpm (AH ). All housing parts in contact with the product are made of PE UHMW which is seven times more resistant to abrasion than Polypropylene and is also more wear resistant than iron, aluminium and some steels. 38 QUATTROFLOW Quattroflow's positive displacement pumps incorporate four piston-diaphragm technology, with no mechanical seals, that are driven by an eccentric shaft and electrical motor. Quattroflow products primarily serve the pharmaceutical and biotech industries that require reliability, product safety, purity and cleanability. The Quattroflow production program consists of four pump series: - QF 150: This pump series is the best entry for laboratories, research centers and universities - small, portable, quiet and scalable. - QF : A versatile tool for many applications in laboratories, pilot and production plants worldwide. Stainless steel valve plate and new diaphragms allow inline steaming, autoclaving and easy cleaning. ALMATEC 3 - QF 0: The QF-0 Series is used in mid-sized crossflow systems and in chromatography systems, where gradient mixing requires a 0:1 turndown ratio. - QF K: The biggest Quattroflow pump with a max. capacity of 000 l/h meets the requirements of high process volumes. The pump series 150, and 0 are also available in a "single use" version with product chambers made of plastic. The main focus is the demand of the users for prevention of expensive and time-consuming flushing. Options A variety of optional equipment is available to allow for a precise set-up to your specific application. Pulsation Damper If a virtually uniform flow is needed, pulsation dampers in different versions are available. Pump series: E-SERIES, CHEMICOR, BIOCOR, FUTUR Barrier Chamber System The ALMATEC barrier chamber system meets high safety requirements. The individual diaphragm is replaced by two diaphragms arranged in tandem with a barrier chamber of conductive PE between them and filled with non-conductive liquid. A change in conductivity of the barrier liquid is detected by sensors and signalled to a controller, which triggers an alarm or disconnects the pump. Pump series: E-SERIES, CHEMICOR, BIOCOR Stroke Counting ALMATEC air-operated diaphragm pumps can be used continuously (h operation) or intermittently for hours, minutes or for an exact defined number of strokes. To accurately count the strokes a sensor can be installed in the pump's center housing (available as pneumatic version also). Pump series: E-SERIES, CHEMICOR, BIOCOR, AH, FUTUR Diaphragm Monitoring A capacitive sensor installed in the pump muffler detects the presence of liquids and in case of a diaphragm rupture it relays a corresponding signal to a controller that triggers an alarm or disconnects the pump via a connected solenoid valve. Pump series: E-SERIES, CHEMICOR, BIOCOR, AH, FUTUR Flange Connection According to recognized industry safety standards, all E-SERIES pump sizes from E 15 to E 0 can be equipped with thread bushings and flange-o-rings for flange connections to DIN or ANSI / PN. Pump series: E-SERIES Draining System The E-SERIES pumps in sizes 15 to 50 are available with a special ALMATEC draining system consisting of a bypass system in the side housings that can be activated easily either via hand-operated valves or pneumatically. In this way, the pump and piping can be drained without having to be dismounted.
