2 KEY PROJECTS Investigation on steel cleanliness in tundish ( 2011 ) A modern day steel making tundish is designed to provide maximum opportunity for carrying out various metallurgical operations such as inclusion separation, inclusion floatation, alloy trimming of steel. Numerical investigation of transient fluid phenomenon in a six strand billet caster tundish has been carried out. The numerical procedure and solution algorithm has been verified by comparing the numerically obtained results. Computational models have been developed to predict inclusion trajectories and their rate of floatation. (Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee, India) Physical modelling and numerical investigation of intermixing during ladle change over in continuous casting tundish. (2013) The objective of the study was to find the amount of intermixed grade because of mixing in the tundish as well as in the strand during ladle change over process in a continuous casting unit. The use of flow modifier devices, as well as the variation of process parameters were carried out to decrease the intermixed amount as compared to the normal operation where no flow modifiers are used in the tundish. The numerical investigation of the process was investigated using CFD modelling of the process. (CSIR Project, New Delhi, India) Physical investigations of grade mixing phenomenon in delta shape steelmaking tundish (2014) A physical investigation on delta shaped billet caster tundish has been carried out to analyze the intermixing behavior. The inflow rate of the stream from a ladle into the tundish was varied so that the level of steel in the tundish falls gradually. A tracer input has been made to monitor the concentrations at outlets of tundish and molds consecutively to obtain the F-curves. Flow rate of steel into the tundish as well as the tundish bath height has been varied and the intermixed amount was calculated by using a physical model of the tundish and water as the flowing medium. (Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee, India) Effect of shroud depth and advance pouring box on fluid flow and inclusion floatation behavior in a slab caster steelmaking tundish (2015) A three-dimensional numerical investigation has been carried out on two-strand slab caster tundish. The effect of the length of ladle shroud, advance pouring box (APB) and its wall inclination angle have been studied by analysing the various fluid flow characteristic values of the tundish. The sizes of inclusions have been varied to understand the inclusion floatation phenomenon. The results show that ladle shroud length, APB, and its wall inclination angle have a significant effect on the fluid flow characteristic of the tundish. (Short-term project, AMU, Aligarh, India) Numerical Simulation of Inclusions Motion Behavior in the Steelmaking Tundish (2015) The melt flow inside tundish has significant impact influence on non-metallic inclusions removal and entrapment. The parametric studies have been carried out to analyze the effect of specific parameters on the enhancement of inclusion entrapment. These parameters include density, size of non-metallic inclusions and different types of tundish furniture. The flow control devices such as a dam, turbulence inhibitor etc., have been used to modify the flow pattern and minimizing short circuit and dead zone. (Short-term project, AMU, Aligarh, India) Experimental and Numerical Investigations pertaining to Electrochemical Honing (2016) The experimental investigations are under progress on different conducting materials to see the effect of process parameters (inter-electrode gap, electrolyte flow rate, electrolyte flow pattern, flushing mechanism, rpm, tool material, the orientation of abrasive etc.) on material removal rate and surface integrity. Also, observation pertaining to geometrical tolerances will also be recorded both and after the ECH process. A simulation model will be developed on available pre-coded multi-physics analysis software taking account of fluid flow, electric field, and heat transfer.
