3 Handling Technical protective measures Precautions must be taken to prevent electrostatic charging, and adequate ventilation and/or extraction must be provided at the workplace. Personal protective measures Where there is a risk of dust formation, respiratory protection (use of a face mask) is necessary. First aid in the event of accidents and fires Burns caused by molten material must be treated by a doctor; otherwise no special measures are necessary. Disposal Non-reusable waste can be disposed of on tips or incinerated in accordance with local authority regulations. -MOD in mixtures with other products should be disposed of as directed. General properties By virtue of its chemical composition and polymeric structure, -MOD has a range of specific properties which are retained when it is mixed with. Mixtures of and -MOD are: - oil, grease and solvent resistant - non-volatile - resistant to abrasion and tear propagation - migration resistant in contact with other plastics and coatings - lightfast - resistant to extraction by most organic solvents, including perchloroethylene and trichloroethylene - low-temperature resistant - bitumen resistant - low-fogging - approved for food contact applications in accordance with the BGA (BgVV) recommendation. Mechanical properties Mechanical properties were tested on the following formulation: Table 1: Formulation* Components Parts S-, k-value 8 - Baymod PU-MOD - 8 Barium/zinc stabiliser 3. Lubricant. The formulation was homogenised on a roll mill for 1 min at 1 C. The resultant milled sheet was compression moulded for 1 min at 175 C to produce sheet from which the test specimens were cut out. 6 Low-temperature resistance A clear illustration of the behaviour of /-MOD polymer blends is provided by the shear modulus as a function of temperature (Figs. 9 and 1). N/mm propagation resistance test on shoe soling (ASTM D 15-55). Crack growth Adding -MOD to plasticised reduces crack growth. This is a measure of the resistance of shoe soles to bending stress during use, and is determined by the SATRA- Ross flexural fatigue test C Temperature υ 1 tan δ % C Temperature υ Material: (k-value ): -MOD 8 : : : : - : 1 In this test, a 1.7 mm long chisel-cut is made along the centre line of the test specimen, which may be either a shoe sole or a test strip. One end of the specimen is then clamped in the flex test machine, while the other is free to move. The specimen is then placed over a rod and flexed through an angle of 45 C at a rate of cycles/minute. The test continues for 1, cycles or until the crack is 6 mm long. The test was carried out on compression moulded sheets (measuring 1 x 5 x 6 mm) whose composition was as follows: Formulation (A)* Fig. 9: Shear modulus G and loss factor tan δ = f (temperature). Torsion pendulum test as a function of -MOD content (DIN ) The cold crack temperature test to DIN (Fig. 6) is best suited to /monomeric plasticiser blends. Problems may arise when performing this test on /polymer blends because their cold crack temperature is influenced to a greater extent by processing parameters and variations in the thickness of the test specimens than is the case with plasticised. At the end of the test period the specimens are taken out, excess liquid is wiped off, and they are weighed. The -day test specimens undergo additional conditioning for 14 days at 3 C and % relative humidity before being weighed. Either dry blends or granules can be used as starting materials, depending on the chosen process. Processing temperatures range from 1 C to C, with the actual temperature being determined by the formulation. The mixing should be carried out as follows: - add the powder and other dry ingredients to the high-speed mixer and mix at C - add the liquid components and mix at a higher speed at 11 C. The liquid components must be completely absorbed by the. - cool and mix at a lower speed When the temperature is below 9 C, add Baymod PU-MOD and mix for approx. 1 minute at a higher speed - cool to C while mixing slowly - empty the mixer , Page 9 of 1

10 Compatibility -MOD is compatible with in any mixing ratio. Monomeric or polymeric plasticisers can be added if greater flexibility is required. Compatibility with Mesamoll is particularly good. Other polymers such as Baymod N (acrylonitrile-butadiene copolymers; NBR) can be used. Stabilisation /Baymod blends can be made heat and light stable by adding the usual stabilisers. The actual choice depends on the type of used, the requirements of the particular process and the end use. With S-, excellent results have been achieved using calcium/zinc, barium/zinc or lead stabilisers, plus epoxy stabilisers or chelating additives if required. Although organo-tin stabilisers provide an excellent stabilising effect when used in /-MOD blends, they can cause the material to stick to the moulds, particularly at high processing temperatures (approx. 19 C). Lubricants Lubricants should be chosen with particular care and added sparingly to prevent exudation. Neutral wax esters, metal stearates (e.g. Ca, Zn and Pb) and combinations thereof are all suitable. In addition to these products, high molecular processing aids such as acrylates and EVA copolymers can also be used. Stearic acid should be used in very small quantities, if at all.
