2 Tivida FL 2300 The High Speed Fluorosurfactant The new branched structure of Tivida FL 2300, the first commercially available C2-Fluorosurfactant of the Tivida FL platform technology, exhibits favorable environmental properties such as no oral toxicity, no aquatic toxicity, no inhalation toxicity, no mutagenicity and no bioaccumulation, and reaches remarkable better dynamic performance in coatings applications than longer chain counterparts. Tivida FL 2300 is a high speed, anionic fluorosurfactant that provides exceptionally fast lowering of surface tension for a broad spectrum of water and solvent based coating systems with minimal foaming. Wetting, leveling and gloss are significantly improved. Good recoatability is provided even at high Tivida FL 2300 concentrations. Due to the high speed reduction of the surface tension in coatings Tivida FL 2300 can be used even in very fast drying systems. Anti-blocking properties are much better in comparison to most fluorosurfactants on the market. 3 Rating Scala Surface Tension Measurement The efficiency of Tivida FL 2300 is demonstrated by determining the lowest surface tension achievable with increasing surfactant concentration (Static Surface Tension) as well as the speed of surface tension reduction (Dynamic Surface Tension) at 3 different surfactant concentrations. Tivida FL 2300 reaches a minimum surface tension of 20 mn/m with an outstanding dynamic behavior which is far better than any available surfactant on the market. Values below 25 mn/m can be reached in less than 200 ms. γ γ C [0.1 wt%] C [0.05 wt%] C [0.025 wt%] Anti Blocking Properties The anti blocking performance indicating face-to-face adhesion of two paint films pressed together was rated visually regarding adhesion of the paint films and defects of the paint surface. Two square strips of 4 cm x 8 cm paint films were pressed together 90 turned to each other by a 1 kg weight in an 40 C oven for 24 h. The films were then allowed to cool for 1 hour before the strips were separated and the ratings of film separation were given. Rating scala: from 0 (d: no surface defects, a: no sticking of stripes) to 5 (d: extensive surface defects, a: stripes cannot be separated by hands anymore). Draw down cards with approximately 20 µm film thickness demonstrate that at concentrations of 0.15 wt%, Tivida FL 2300 was found to improve leveling significantly and to eliminate craters. 4 Leveling White light interferometry was used to investigate the leveling properties of Tivida FL 2300 in a water based polyacrylate emulsion. Hereby surface structures of e.g. coatings can be visualized in detail. A concentration of 0.01 wt% active ingredient is already sufficient to reduce surface defects in the size of 1 10 mm. Without surfactant Containing 0.01 wt% active ingredient Recoatability/ Intercoat Adhesion Recoatability was tested in a typical automotive OEM coating using the Cross Cut Test. Tivida FL 2300 was added in different concentrations to the waterborne base coat system. Even with high concentrations of Tivida FL 2300 such as 1 wt% active ingredient the intercoat adhesion properties of the coatings system stayed excellent. Cross Cut Test on automotive OEM coating containing 1 wt% active ingredient Foam Test The foaming behavior of Tivida FL 2300 was tested in a water based acrylic melamine coatings system using the Tego Foam Test (ASTM D ). 50 ml of paint was stirred for 1 min at 2300 rev/min. Afterwards the height of 45 g of the stirred paint was measured with a graduated cylinder. This test demonstrates the clear advantage of the branched structure of Tivida FL 2300 in comparison to linear fluorosurfactants. It can be expected that this will result in improved processing properties of the paint and fewer defects in the final coatings layer.
