<Insert Picture Here> Global Perspective On Innovation Kevin Walsh Senior VP Research and Development Oracle Asia Pacific
Oracle Corporation World s largest enterprise software vendor $14.8 Billion revenue, FY06 275,000+ global customers 30,000+ applications customers 19,000+ small business customers 68,000+ employees; 7,000+ support personnel 19,000+ partners 9,000+ Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) Operating in 145 Countries
Innovation 32% of global companies rank innovation as their top priority in % of global companies rank innovation as one of their top 3 priorities Source: Second Annual BusinessWeek/Boston Consulting Group Survey on Innovation, April 2006
What is Innovation? The process of making improvements by introducing something new. The act of introducing something new: something newly introduced The process of translating new ideas into tangible societal impact The introduction of something new. A new idea, method or device. The successful exploitation of new ideas. Change that creates a new dimension of performance A creative idea that is realized. The capability of continuously realizing a desired future state The staging of value and/or the conservation of value. Source
Epiphany: There is no Epiphany! Innovation is hard to define, but it is even harder to achieve It s genesis is insight and creativity, but that alone is not enough It thrives on persistence in spite of failure It is not diminished by failure, and often reuses failure s experience in unpredictable ways It is a global phenomenon, which is amplified by sharing It can be best facilitated through the broadest application of open standards, sharing and adaptation of itself. It is an inclusive process which happens fastest when there is a way to leverage other innovations Innovation is not the same as Invention: Innovators must make the ideas into actions, not just describe them.
Innovation or Failure or Both? 1968 Spencer Silver invents a glue which doesn t stick - Useless failure! 1974 Arthur Fry uses on a bookmark - it works! M launches post-its but nobody will buy it, Failed again! 1979 They give away the product, people try it, they love it! Success!
Connected Ideas + Problem = Innovation
Ideas Cannot Stand Alone
Globalization Changes Everything Innovators are moving their supply chain offshore R&D: Procter & Gamble to source 50% of new product ideas from global partners by Design: Boeing designing navigation and landing gear systems offshore in India. Manufacturing: Dell, Apple, and Sony use China s Quanta Computer for laptop manufacturing. Our strategy is to work with global networks to leverage the best technologies on the planet. HP SVP Dick Conrad
Innovation and China Innovation is the core of China s science and technology policy and economic policy Innovation is the starting point of technological progress and the centerpiece of industrial restructuring and intensive economic growth approach Innovation is a key driver for China to become a global leader in the realm of science, technology and the economy
Oracle s Understanding of Innovation Innovation is a key factor of total factor productivity (TFP) and for achieving sustainable economic growth. Oracle proactively supports China s innovation Innovation can be manifested in the forms of: introduction of new products (product innovation) adoption of new production method (technological innovation) development of new market (market innovation) acquisition of new sources of raw material (new resources) implementation of new organizational structure (managerial innovation) (Joseph Schumpeter,1912) Integrative innovation and re-innovation through introduction, absorption and digestion are as important as original innovation for China at current development stage of per capita income of $1700. Technological and business process reengineering, upgrading and renovation of software and hardware equipment, and imitation, transplantation and integration of global industrial benchmark and technological leaders, including informatization of manufacturing and service industries, all belong to innovation Therefore, Oracle is willing to provide software platform for Chinese enterprises to innovate and help them to elevate their management level and competitiveness
Software is a Key Area for Innovation Software industry development conforms to the scientific development view of China: informatization will save financial and material inputs, achieve real, qualitative growth to increase efficiency Innovation is an internal requirement of software industry: Knowledge- and human capital-intensive, hi-tech in nature Quickly upgraded Diversely demanded in an ever enlarging market International division of labor formed as a result of years of global competition: The U.S.,Japan and Ireland are leaders in operating system development and software standard making, embedded software development, and module software development respectively Progress upward along the software industrial chain requires long-term accumulation. Highlighting re-innovation through introduction, absorption and digestion, borrowing international experience and capacity reservation, will lower followers investment risk, shorten their business cycle and obtain mutual benefits
Oracle s Innovation in Practice Three decades ago, Larry Ellison saw an opportunity on relational database and discovered that no company had committed to commercializing the technology. He and other partners founded Oracle Corporation which has become the largest enterprise software provider in the world today It is innovation that drives Oracle's success: Oracle is the first software company to develop and deploy 100 percent internetenabled enterprise software across its entire product line: database, business applications, and application development and decision support tools Oracle also commits to enable all software products to work collaboratively using the suite approach On R&D investment: Spent $2.2 Billion or 12% of total revenue in FY07 on R&D Acquired 30+ specified software companies since 2005 to meet customer demands more rapidly. Oracle integrates technologies and products of acquired companies and bought IPR authorization from them

In Summary Innovation is not just about thinking of new Ideas; It is making them happen that counts Innovation often comes from repeated failures which evolve and recombine to become success To foster Innovation it is important to consider The Global connectedness of ideas The process of discovery and application of ideas The reuse of ideas and best practices, especially through open standards The ability to leverage and connect unrelated ideas Across industries, locations, culture and applications Essential Elements = 5 I s : Infrastructure, Investment, Ideas, Information Flows, Interconnection
