A Close Look at the Lack of Evidence Behind the Claims and How They Fail to Meet Best Practices for Environmental Marketing Phil Riebel, President, Two Sides North America This presentation will analyze in detail some environmental claims that going paperless save trees. A few examples will be used to illustrate that most of these claims are misleading for the following reasons: 1) there are few if any science-based and verifiable facts to support them, 2) they fail to consider the life cycle of sustainably managed forests, including the long-term environmental benefits of managed forests 3) they do not consider the environmental impacts of alternatives communication methods, i.e. electronic media, and 4) they do not meet best practices for environmental marketing as stated by the US Federal Trade Commission and the International Standardization Organization.

4 The Changing Face of Pulp and Paper Education in the United States Gary M. Scott, Ph.D., Professor and Chair, Paper and Bioprocess Engineering & Director, Division of Engineering, College of Environmental Science and Forestry, SUNY-ESF Historically, a strong core of institutions has provided educational programs to train engineers and scientists for the pulp and paper industry. The Pulp and Paper Education and Research Alliance (PPERA) is an alliance of such schools committed to training engineers and the advancement of the pulp and paper industry. PPERA currently has 11 educational institutional members in the United States including institutions that offer programs in paper engineering and paper science; bioprocess, bioresource, and bioproduct engineering; chemical and biochemical engineering; and material science. Over the past decade, we have seen the number of traditional paper engineering programs diminish as several institutions have shifted their emphasis more broadly towards biobased engineering. Many programs have also shifted to a more explicit focus on sustainability as these changes were made. From printing and writing grades, to packaging and some specialties, many brand owners turn to certified products to gain confidence in their supply chain. Meanwhile ongoing changes within the programs continue to add burdens to certificate holders, in some cases without providing significant benefits. In an effort to find uncover new models to grow certification, the Sustainable Packaging Coalition is using the Value Innovation Process. By connecting members from across the supply chain from landowners to brand owners the SPC is working to identify the commonalities and disconnections between stakeholders which may be limiting growth.
