DESERTEC Renewable and Clean Energy Renewables can supply electricity during 99,9% of the time Götz Schuchart Co-Founder DESERTEC Foundation

Source: NASA

In 2050, the world s population will need 3 planets to cover its demand for resources 3

How can 9 billion people live peacefully together on just one planet? 4

Challenges of a global energy supply growing energy demand and the threat of climate change 1. By 2050, the global demand for electricity will more than double The world population will grow from 7 to around 9 billion people Developing countries will catch up with industrialized states 2. Simultaneously, a fast and drastic reduction of CO 2 is necessary in order to prevent catastrophic climate change 5 If the earth warms by more than 2 C, tipping points will be reached, and lead to runaway climate change If we release over 750 billion metric tonnes of additional CO 2, it becomes more and more likely that we will pass the 2 C limit At the current rate of growth, CO 2 emissions will breach that 750 bn tonne limit in 25 years

Clean energy is available in abundance! Within 6 hours deserts receive more energy from the sun than humankind consumes within a year

Clean energy is available in abundance! But only a fraction of these areas would be needed to supply the world s population with clean energy Today and in the year 2050

Global fossil fuel reserves Conventional energy resources vs. Annual global solar radiation

The DESERTEC Concept for EU-MENA (Europe, Middle East, Northern Africa)

The DESERTEC Concept for EU-MENA DLR Studies: renewable energy potential in the EU and in MENA Biomass: TWh/y Solar power: TWh/y Geothermal: TWh/y Electricity demand in EU-MENA in the year 2050: TWh/y Windpower: TWh/y Hydropower: TWh/y 10

The DESERTEC Concept for EU-MENA The best sites offer the greatest benefit for climate protection For the same investment, the best sites can produce more clean electricity and therefore replace more conventional power Solar energy especially in the south, wind power in coastal areas, hydropower in the mountains, biomass in fertile central Europe, geothermal as available 11

The DESERTEC Concept for EU-MENA faces many challenges for it s implementation 1. Difficult Geo-Political environment Many countries with different political systems involved in the concept Unstable political situation in several MENA countries 2. Difficulties due to the financial crisis / Uncertainty for investors 12

DESERTEC and Brazil We want to promote the basic ideas of the DESERTEC concept for Brazil Brazil has excellent conditions to achieve the supply of electricity 100% from renewable energy sources. We would like to promote the revision of the Brazilian National Plan for Energy in order to put highest priority on renewables and set aggressive but achievable goals for the future! We believe that Brazil has in many ways more favorable conditions than other regions on Earth for achieving the final goal in a faster time frame. 13

DESERTEC and Brazil 1) The country already receives 70% electricity from Hydro Power 14 Source:

DESERTEC and Brazil 2) The country has excellent conditions for Solar Power 15 Source: ATLAS de Irradiação Solar no Brasil (Adaptado).

DESERTEC and Brazil 3) The country has excellent conditions for Wind Power 16 Source: Atlas do Potencial Eolico Brasileiro

DESERTEC and Brazil 4) The country has excellent conditions for Biomass 17 Source: CENTRO NACIONAL DE REFERÊNCIA EM BIOMASSA - CENBIO

DESERTEC and Brazil Excellent conditions for achieving electricity supply from 100% renewable sources 5) The country has no need to create any new expensive energy storages which are usually required for Solar and Wind Power due to the high usage of Hydro Power 6) Brazil has all required renewable resources inside it s own country 7) Brazil can achieve the goals without depending on other countries cooperation (although it would be favorable to have an integrated concept for LATAM or the South Cone). Considering all these factors in comparison to the conditions which we are 18 facing in EU-MENA, Brazil is a land of milk and honey!

High level vision for Brazil 1) No need to construct additional hydro power plants besides the ones in construction and planning 2) Use Solar and Wind Power to replace Fossil Fuel and Nuclear Power Plants 3) Use Biomass Power plants to cover peaks not covered by Hydro Power (golden reserve) 4) Invest heavily in energy efficiency measures (huge potential!) 19

High level vision for Brazil 5) Incentivize decentralized generation of energy a) Grid connected PV (residential and business) b) Use of Solar Thermal and Biomass by the Industry (process energy) c) Solar Thermal for Residential Water heating We truly believe that it is possible to achieve the electricity supply from 100% renewable sources. It will take many decades but it is the only way for a sustainable future and Brazil could become a world wide leader in this respect. 20

DESERTEC is promoting the establishment of the necessary framework conditions South America We are starting activities in Chile Peru and soon in Brazil 21

22 Become part of the solution!

2009 DESERTEC Foundation Fast worldwide implementation of the DESERTEC Concept Founded by the Club of Rome and committed private individuals, the nonprofit DESERTEC Foundation is a global civil society initiative aiming to shape a sustainable future With around 30 staff members and country coordinators and a large global community of supporters, the foundation is active around the world, accelerating the global implementation of the DESERTEC Concept: It informs civil society and politicians about DESERTEC Supports knowledge transfer and scientific co-operation Fosters exchange and co-operation with the private sector Evaluates and initiates projects that could serve as models 23 Promotes the establishment of necessary framework conditions

Informing the world that DESERTEC Demonstrates how to combat climate change, ensure a reliable energy supply and promote security and development by using all renewable energies where they are at their most abundant and by integrating them into a transnational super grid.
