2 Introduction 2 benchmarking is vital, particularly in industries like Building and Civil Engineering Contracting where the recruitment landscape is dynamic and ever changing. No matter what happens in the industry and employment trends, salary alone should never be the sole reason for someone to accept a new job. However, it is important for employers to keep up to date with salary data to ensure they are able to attract the top talent from the relevant candidate pools, and more importantly retain their staff with market rate remuneration. It is also shrewd for candidates to keep their fingers on the pulse of the high/low/average salary levels for their job role. 4 4 Construction Market in the UK 2017 The UK Construction market has enjoyed another buoyant year so far meaning recruitment in the sector has been extremely busy again. There are still major skill shortages across the UK with full order books and pipelines meaning companies are continuously demanding more skilled professionals. A busy market also drives high levels of staff movement between businesses, and as a result salaries are usually driven up. It is important to keep a close eye on the salary trends here. London is busy as ever, and more developments in the Midlands and North have meant that all over the UK we are seeing recruitment increase and demand of skilled professionals grow, particularly in the Commercial and Planning disciplines. The housing market in particular is poised to continue its steady growth, although the impact of last year s EU referendum and the triggering of Brexit has yet to really take hold. The following salary information is based on our own placement data, which you can use to reliably understand the salary levels of different positions in the build contracting industry. 10 Civil Engineering Market in the UK 2017 Civil Engineering in the UK has been having an excellent year the market has grown considerably and we are not expecting it to slow down in the foreseeable future. There have been some interesting recruitment trends that it is important for employers and job seekers alike to be aware of but all typical of a healthy and robust market. Over the past twelve months, many major projects have been awarded or moved to construction such as HS2, Thames Tideway and Hinkley. Most contractors on these major projects draw on their own staff resources from other projects which in turn requires roles to be back filled, although these resources are often not sufficient. It is interesting to see the effects these patterns have had on average salaries as companies are all looking to attract the same staff and must offer more than just the basic package/rate. Speed of recruitment is also vital; too much hesitation and a company can easily lose a star candidate to their competition. Companies are thinking harder about what they need to do to attract staff subsistence for the right person makes a big difference, but we are finding also that a bigger focus on company culture and overall ethos has become imperative in making a business stand out as an attractive employer. Many companies are now retaining our services and thus allowing us to allocate proper resources to finding the right person for their specific requirements.
