1 Annual Report
2 Our Vision To provide transferable transportable skills for long term employment ranging from basic skills, literacy and academic upgrading, through job specific training and apprenticeship, retention counseling and other on the job support Our Mission To collaboratively build skills, capacity, competency and sustainability to match the employment needs of Aboriginal People and the Member Partner Companies in North East BC Our Mandate To work collaboratively with member Partners to address the labour and skills shortages in the Aboriginal community in Northeast BC
3 BACKGROUND The Northeast Aboriginal Skills and Employment Partnership Program (NEASEP) bridges the skills gap between local Aboriginal Peoples and large scale industrial sectors, including Oil and Gas, Forestry, Mining and Trades, by providing essential skills training, education, apprenticeship opportunities, retention and employment support to participants. The project is co-funded by the Government of Canada, and is delivered under the guidance and direction of the North East Aboriginal Skills and Employment Partnership Society, and supported by North East Native Advancing Society, the BC Métis Association, and other industry partners active in the Northeast. Committed partners currently include such innovative industry and community leaders as Doig River Energy, Western Coal, Dunne-za Ventures, and EnCana Corporation, Shell Canada with new partner EWD and others waiting to come on board to participate in this project. NEASEP helps local Aboriginal people to successfully enter and remain in the workforce through a strategic and cooperative partnership with local industry and businesses. Through the project, industry will benefit by employing and retaining skilled, trained and supported Aboriginal workers. Aboriginal workers will have the opportunity to build their capacity and match their skills, abilities, and interests to a wide variety of training and employment options required by industry employers. This ensures that education and skills-training is personalized to the needs of the employee, and reflects the realities of industry employment in the Northeast. This will help create higher levels of job satisfaction, increased employment and retention rates and additional economic development incentives that will benefit both employers and Aboriginal communities. The program complements other initiatives and builds on past successes of the partners collaboration in developing realistic and efficient support systems and employment skills development for Aboriginal people.
4 MORE BACKGROUND In partnership with industry, the NEASEP program prepares, informs and educates participants in all areas related to their chosen career path (or one they may find interesting) through a structured training to employment planning process. NEASEP provides participants with the skills development, support and education necessary to establish workers with the capacity and skill base for long-term links to employment. Of particular significance, the goals for this project include an additional focus on training and employing Aboriginal women, and youth, who face additional challenges in entering and remaining in the workforce. Specific areas of support which together make this project unique, include: LIFE SKILLS ESSENTIAL SKILLS ACADEMIC SUCCESS SKILLS TRAINING AND ACQUISITION EMPLOYMENT READINESS LONG-TERM JOB RETENTION The Northeast Aboriginal Skills and Employment Partnership program is an exciting opportunity for industry leaders committed to supporting the human resource development of the Aboriginal peoples of Northeast BC.
