The course will cover topics that are pertinent to the study of air pollution, such as air pollution meteorology, sources of pollution, pollutant fate and transport, effects of air pollution, ambient air monitoring, and pollution abatement. Regulatory models currently available for estimating pollutant emissions and air concentrations will be presented and discussed in the class. Instructor s notes and excerpts from several reference books will be distributed in the class to supplement the topics discussed in the textbooks. Students are required to read the assigned chapters, classnotes, and excerpts prior to the class meeting. A list of the reference books is presented in this syllabus and additional references will be given in the class during the semester. Students are expected to complete a review/research paper during the semester. The topic of the paper has to be relevant to the field of air pollution. Final grade will be determined based on the student s performance in homework, quizzes, exams, research paper, and the final exam. Course Objectives: The objective of this course is to introduce the student to environmental engineering fundamentals and to establish the fundamental principles of an environmental ethic that will lead to sustainability for humans and the ecological systems that support us. Specifically, the student will develop the following skills: Perform materials balances for steady-state systems with conservative and non-conservative pollutants. (A2) Perform energy balances to analyze energy flows. (A2) Design basic photovoltaic systems and passive solar for residences. (C2, H2) Apply mathematics of growth to human and resource issues (H2) Explain and apply the fundamentals of risk assessment. (H1, J2) An understanding of water and air quality fundamentals and the law. (H2, J2) Ability to evaluate human activities and global atmospheric change. (H2, I3, J1) Ability to work in teams to solve open-ended design problem. (D1, C5, G1, G2, I3) The ability to understand the impacts of engineering decisions on the environment in which we live and the sustainability consequences of those actions. (H1, H2) 3
4 Topics covered 1. Mass and Energy Transfer (Chapter 1) 2. Environmental Chemistry (Chapter 2) 3. Mathematics for Growth (Chapter 3) 4. Risk Assessment (Chapter 4) 5. Solid Waste Management (Chapter 9) Class Schedule Class: MWF 10:30 11:20 Contribution of course to meeting the professional component: engineering science and engineering design component. This course contributes to the Grades Your grade for this course will be assessed based on your performance in the quizzes (20 %), mid-term exams and an optional final exam (40 %), homework (25 %), and term paper (15 %). Several quizzes will be given throughout the semester. The content of a quiz could be the materials covered in previous sessions or to be covered that day. Your lowest quiz will not be counted toward your final grade. There will be no make-up quizzes. Three exams will be given during the semester. Students are required to take all three exams. Make-up exams will be given only for extremely credible reasons. Final exam is optional. If you elect this option, your final exam will be used to replace your worst exam. Your final grade will be calculated based on the points you have accumulated as follows: A >90 B >80 but <90 C >70 but <80 D >50 but <70 F <50 Attendance of the class is mandatory. Your final grade will be downgraded one notch (i.e., from A to B or from B to C ) if you miss more than three classes without the instructor s consent. The instructor reserves the right to revise this grading plan. However, students will be informed of any changes during the semester. Homework Regular homework assignments will be used to reinforce the concepts and problem-solving 4
5 techniques covered in the textbooks and class. Homework will be assigned in class. All homework will be graded. Homework should be neatly presented on engineering paper or equivalent. You may be asked to present your homework solutions in class. Late homework will only be accepted in the event of illness or an emergency and must be approved by the instructor. Term Paper Your term paper will be graded on the basis of overall quality, technical content, clarity, use of graphics, and grammar. You should follow the format of a technical paper presented in a technical journal or conference as if you are preparing a paper for publication. Include in you paper introduction, literature review, technical analyses/important findings, discussions/further research, summary/conclusion, and references. Review as many papers that are relevant to the topic you selected as you can. Review and attach hard copies of at least 5 papers you reviewed for your term project. Abstracts and website contents available on Internet are not considered papers. Only review of cited journal and conference papers is acceptable. You may choose your own topic or pick one from the instructor s suggest list. A list of relevant topics will be given by the instructor by Feb. 20, Submit your term paper on April 26, You are required to make a 20-minute power-point presentation on April 29. Your final grade for the term paper will be determined based on your report and verbal presentation. Instructor s Office Hour During the specified office hours, you can drop in my office for any questions regarding the subjects discussed in the class without making an appointment. Of course, you are always welcomed to visit me at any other times, but I may not be available for discussion because of other commitments. Leave me a note, call for an appointment, or send me an will be the most effective way to catch me for your questions. Remember, do not pile up questions and expect me to answer all your questions the day before an exam. 5
