MLB Greening Initiative In 2008 Major League Baseball commissioner, Bud Selig, launched the MLB Greening Initiative. With the new MLB initiative the Pirates launched their Let s Go Bucs. Let s Go Green. program in 2008 focusing on: Recycling Conservation Education
Before Let s Go Bucs. Let s Go Green. No set recycling programs All trash went into landfill Millions of bottles were being thrown away each year Fryer oils collected and disposed of Cardboard and wooden pallets were the only recycled items
Recycling Recycling program started in 2008 at PNC Park Contour bottles were placed throughout ballpark All bottles are collected and recycled Cardboard continues to be recycled as started in 2001 Green Team created for collecting and separating recyclable items
Recycling Results Aluminum ,913 pounds Tons Tons Tons Tons Tons Plastic ,547 Pounds Tons Tons Tons Tons Tons

Paper Usage/Printing Paper: All paper used is more environmentally friendly. Toilet paper is made from 100% recycled materials Restroom hand towels are made from 45% recycled materials. All of the team's office paper, including copy paper, team stationary and business cards are made from 30 percent postconsumer paper. Paper Totals: Tons Tons Tons Tons Tons Printing: The Pirates print the club's various publications in soy based ink on FSC certified paper, including: Game Day Program Annual Pirates Yearbook Annual Community Report Pirates Media Guide PNC Park's A to Z Guide
Energy and Resource Reduction Before 2008, only the most rudimentary efforts were in place. Low Flow toilets (1.6 gpf) and urinals (1 gpf) Push button faucets Low flow aerators typically 2 gpm, ours are 1gpm All fan and cooling units are on variable frequency drives In recent years, initiatives in power and water reduction have reduced the carbon footprint of the ballpark and saved the organization hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Water Conservation Hydration station cuts down on plastic waste and water waste. Saved 40,071 bottles to date, which could stretch for 7 miles Reduced pressure washing operations by 1 gpm and installed credit meters
Energy Conservation Use of MicroLight lighting control system to maximize efficiency Relamped over 7000 fixtures with energy efficient bulbs reducing average from 100 watts to 25 watts Installation of occupancy sensors in most rooms Installation of timers on walk in coolers Conversion of bulk Co2 system to self pressurized system Domestic water pumps are shut down post season and reduced pressure from the city system is engaged
Heating / Cooling Installation of dry coolers allows the use of outside air to cool ice machine instead of chilled water and also eliminates waste water from condensation. Installation of unit that uses warm water from condensers to blow warm air into loading dock space. Addition of separate cooling systems that allow specific offices to cool without running an entire quadrant. Addition of plastic strips to freezer to hold temperature when door is open. Inventoried all refrigerator gaskets in ballpark and replaced those damaged or leaking. Use of economizer cycles to use outdoor air when temperatures permit to heat or cool building.
Composting Composting started in 2009 at PNC Park At the time, the Pirates were one of only four major league teams to take this step. This program allows for the collection of organic material, which helps in slowing down the production of methane, a greenhouse gas that is generated when food and organic material decompose in the landfill.
Composting Food Waste Tons Tons Tons Tons Tons Yard Waste Tons Tons Tons Tons Tons
Concessionaire Initiatives Most non biodegradable materials have been eliminated in the utensils, plates, napkins and food carriers. Now both companies use compostable materials in their products. The cups used at PNC Park are recyclable, and the Coke cups are compostable.
Rock and Wrap it Up In partnership with concessionaires ARAMARK and Levy, the Pirates also support Rock and Wrap it Up! Inc. Rather than being thrown away, prepared but untouched food is donated to the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. Served 2,800 Meals During 2013 Season

Green Cleaning Green Works Naturally Derived Cleaners Made with biodegradable cleaning ingredients such as coconuts, essential oils and corn. Micro fiber cleaning rags take airborne fibers out of the air Ready to dispense cleaning products in dispensing system to control portions and safety Pro Team vacuums with HEPA filters to reduce airborne fibers Kaivac Machine Green sealed program that is a no touch cleaning system. Tennant machine carpet extractor Green sealed equipment Tennant machine scrubbers Green sealed equipment Green odor control system in selected areas throughout the ballpark. In house laundering of rags and mop heads eliminating heavy metals transferred from others. Flat mop with microfiber mop heads to reduce airborne fibers and ergonomically better for the health and safety of the user.

The Pittsburgh Pirates and AgRecycle The Pittsburgh Pirates partnered with AgRecycle in AgRecycle was the best option for the Pirates in regards to composting.
