7 Vietnam Food Security Index Overall, Vietnam was ranked top three of food security in ASEAN. World Rank OVERALL SCORES 1 Malaysia 2 Thailand 3 Vietnam 4 Philippines 5 Indonesia 6 Myanmar 7 Cambodia STRENGTHS - existence of national dietary guidelines (Nutritional Standards) - continued steady annual growth in agricultural production - existence of government s food safety guideline - well-developed multilateral farmer financing programs CHALLENGES The challenge is not only in continuing the good focus and progress in food availability, quality and safety, but also in ensuring affordable nutrition for Vietnam s growing population.
8 Food Security - One of the key sustainable growth considerations for Vietnam Assessment through Affordability, Availability, and Quality & Safety Vietnam food consumption makes up more than 50% share of household expenditures. Agricultural sector plays an important role in ensuring food security. 21% of country GDP comes from agriculture sector. Vietnam is world s leading rice exporter. Vietnam continues to face challenges in addressing the nutrition needs. 8 8
9 National Food Security Plan 2020 The country will need 50.3 million tons of food including 32.1 million tons of rice in A minimum of 3.8 million ha of land has been set aside for rice cultivation up to Strengthening research and the application of technology and reducing post-harvest losses Renovating land policies and enhancing environmental protection standards. 9 9
10 National Nutrition Strategy By the year 2020, Improve diet of Vietnamese people in terms of quantity, balanced quality, hygienic and safety. Reduce child malnutrition, especially prevalence of stunting Manage obesity/overweight, and limit risks of nutrition related chronic diseases. 13 Maximizing the yields of seeds through sustainable farming practices Rice-After-Shrimp Farming System In Vietnam, rice is grown in the rainy season and shrimp is farmed in the dry season. Farming both of these on the same field presents unique challenges. DuPont developed PHB71, a rice hybrid that can better withstand salty soil Local rice farmers have experienced great success with the seeds. Video link 13
14 Maximizing the yields of seeds through sustainable farming practices DuPont Farm Model Project Launch A collaboration project to educate farmers on good sustainable farming practices for high rice production output while maintaining environmental stewardship and safety. The pilot project will be carried out in the North Vietnam, at Thanh Hoa Province, by Q
15 Protecting fields against pests and disease We are working side-by-side with farmers supporting them to access tools and technologies to grow food sustainably. We collaborate with public organizations and our business partners to transfer technology to farmers and educate them about good farming practices. Every year DuPont in Vietnam provides training on safe use to approx 75,000 farmers nationwide. 15
16 Enhancing the nutritional value of food Our solutions help improve the nutritional value of food, ensuring food safety, and finding sustainable solutions. We offer a broad range of food and dietary supplement solutions, providing enhanced bio-protection, improved nutritional profile, and better taste and texture. Dairy milk is a key part of a nutritious and balanced diet especially for Vietnam s younger population. 16
17 Reducing waste by diagnostic testing and packaging technology to protect food from contaminants and decay DuPont creates unique packaging technologies and materials that speed production, reduce cost, and minimize the impact of packaging on the environment.
