1 Nahas Building, 4 th floor Eco-Building, Sustainability, & Green Associate Training This innovative course, suitable for all levels, has been designed to give architects, engineers, developers, or any other construction professional a complete and methodical understanding of sustainable development in design and construction. The Course 8 Seminars, each 2.5 to 3 hours, cover both theoretical concepts and practical applications on ways to minimize and mitigate the impacts of design and buildings on the natural environment, as well as enhance the health & well-being of buildings' occupants. Alternatively, the modules can be undertaken individually or in any combination. Most eco-building design and techniques can be adopted, when applicable, to all type of projects, whether residential, commercial, public, or other buildings. Case studies have also been integrated into the seminars program to enrich the course with practical examples of projects in Lebanon. The Seminars In addition to the regular presentations, we invite specialist professionals in the construction industry to intervene and present specific eco-friendly solutions or products - during some of the sessions. 2 Case Study - Yarze 1674 (targeting BREEAM Very Good certificate, with NEEREA): First project targeting BREEAM to obtain the NEEREA loan, project s sustainability features, NEEREA loan challenges Seminar 2 - Wednesday November 8 th, 2017 Bio-climatic Design in warm / hot countries: Basic design principles of bioclimatic houses in warm/hot countries, overview of natural ventilation & various passive ventilation techniques, insulation & U- values, air tightness, reducing the heat island effect, importance of natural daylighting, glazing, shading devices, green roofs Seminar 3 - Tuesday November 14 th, 2017 Choice of Materials & Waste Management: Importance of materials selection (lower impact materials, local and regionally-sourced materials, recycled or re-used materials, sustainably-sourced materials and timber, renewable materials), how to choose between different building elements, low-impact finishes, waste management during construction and during the building s operation Introduction to Life-Cycle Assessment & its application in the construction industry: Familiarization with Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and environmental footprinting, their importance & use in the construction industry, including: LCA contribution to BREEAM & certification credits, LCA standards, tools, and eco-labeling including Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) Seminar 4 - Wednesday November 15 th, 2017 Energy-Efficiency Lighting & HVAC: Overview of energy-efficiency technologies / solutions suitable to hot climates, lighting and appliances, building services HVAC systems control and low-energy cooling, mechanical ventilation with heat recovery, low-environmental impact cooling, choice of refrigerants and refrigerant leak detection systems, sub-metering and BMS, thermal comfort, thermal zoning and controls, and commissioning. Case Study: Thermal Modeling: A full dynamic 3D model of a Printing Press in Kuwait including the objectives of the analysis, modelling procedure, results, and conclusions Introduction to Renewable Energies: Overview of renewable energy technologies / solutions suitable to the Mediterranean and hot climates (solar water heating, photovoltaics, building integrated photovoltaics, solar thermal heating, solar thermal cooling, wind power, geothermal

3 energy and ground-source heat pump, CHP, tri-generation and energy waste recovery) Seminar 5 - Tuesday November 21 st, 2017 Nahas Building, 4 th floor Sustainable Sites, Ecology & Landuse: Overview of what constitute sustainable sites, reduction of site water pollution, overview of how to protect and enhance the ecological value of a site and its biodiversity Case Study - Casa Batroun: A small private house renovated and extended in an eco-friendly manner, which achieved the BREEAM Excellent rating and is the 1 st project to be BREEAM-certified in Lebanon, and 1 st Excellent rating in the Middle-East. Presentation describing the bio-climatic design; the choice of materials; as well as all the energy-efficiency, water conservation, and sustainability features of the house. Seminar 6 - Thursday November 23 rd, 2017 Introduction to Water Conservation: Importance of water conservation, water-efficient devices and fixtures, rainwater collection in buildings, grey-water recycling, low-water irrigation and landscaping Case Study - IC Elementary School: First project in Lebanon to achieve a Certificate and the Gold; presentation includes the IC School environmental policy, for Schools, and the new buildings green features (from each credit category within ) Seminar 7 - Tuesday November 28 th, 2017 GA Exam Preparation Session Overview of, the USGBC, and GBCI Green Associate exam preparation: GA specific exam preparation (overview of GA exam structure, hints on what to pay attention at, sample exam questions, online resources useful to prepare the exam) Green Associate Mock Exam

4 Seminar 8 - Wednesday November 29 th, 2017 This seminar is in collaboration with theotherdada Introduction to Biomimicry by theotherdada: Biomimicry is a Sustainable Design Methodology and approach to innovation that seeks sustainable solutions to human challenges by emulating nature s time-tested patterns & strategies. The core idea is that nature has already solved many of the problems we are grappling with. Animals, plants, and microbes are the consummate engineers. This seminar will give an overview of Biomimicry with some of its applications. Introduction to EcoDesign & Circular Economy by EcoConsulting: An introduction to the Circular Economy, and what is meant by eco-designing while keeping in mind the full life-cycle of a product, from resource extraction to product disposal. A discussion about some of the most important criteria of eco-design will be followed by a few challenging questions to pick up your brains! CPD Certificates An individualized Continuous Professional Development (CPD) Certificate will be issued by EcoConsulting for all seminar sessions attended. Certificates of attendance can also contribute to the GA or AP Credentials Maintenance Program (CMP), or to demonstrate eligibility in order to register for the GA exam.
