2 Preface This document is a collection of job descriptions where Koppers H6 Marine piles have been used to provide long lasting, aesthetically pleasing, economical, low maintenance marine structures. These are just some of the hundreds of marine structures that utilise Koppers H6 marine piles all around Australia. The marina was extended in 1972 using 100 Koppers double treated piles.

3 Bakers Marina Pitwater, Sydney This fixed walkway timber marina in Pittwater, Sydney, was constructed in The owner, Jack Baker, completed the initial stages using untreated turpentine piles and timber decking. The marina was extended in 1972 using 100 Koppers double treated piles. An inspection at low tide in 1982 showed no sign of deterioration of the Koppers piles due to either decay or marine borer activity, while the untreated turpentine piles were showing attack by at least two types of marine borers. An unexpected example of the effectiveness of the double treatment resulted when the treated off-cuts were dropped into the water at time of construction and left undisturbed for eleven years.

When examined after this exposure, attack by Teredo in the exposed inner wood was obvious, while the treated sapwood envelope was completely in tact.

Please refer to the Koppers Piling Guide for suitable treatment of cut, drilled or damaged marine piles, such that the protective envelope remains sound.

4 An unexpected example of the effectiveness of the double treatment resulted when the treated off-cuts were dropped into the water at time of construction and left undisturbed for eleven years. In this situation marine borers had access to the untreated heartwood. When examined after this exposure, attack by Teredo in the exposed inner wood was obvious, while the treated sapwood envelope was completely in tact. This attack does not occur in the standing pile as borers do not have access to the inner wood. Please refer to the Koppers Piling Guide for suitable treatment of cut, drilled or damaged marine piles, such that the protective envelope remains sound. Note: Treated off-cuts should not be disposed of by throwing into the water, as PEC may bleed from the end grain of the timber, which can produce a very thin oil slick. Photo taken Dec. 1993, 21 years old During 1998 three of the Koppers double treated piles were removed to allow a large vessel to be temporarily moored. On inspection of these piles they were found to be completely sound and they were re-installed when the vessel left the mooring. Since the previous inspection in 1982, the marina building was completely reconstructed on Koppers CCA treated hardwood foundation piles also. Unfortunately, with a change of ownership and client requirements in late 2005, the marina was demolished and replaced with a concrete walkway, floating marina. It seems a pity to replace a cost effective, natural, proven product with one that will not look as good in the long term, or last as long! Originally prepared by Alan Maling, Kardon Marketing. Timber was chosen as the major construction material, both because it was relatively easy to transport and handle in a rather difficult environment and because the

All materials are from sustainable resources with an emphasis on timber and glass. The guiding motto for everyone involved with designing and building the resort was as nature would have it. Over 900 Koppers double treated timber piles were driven as building foundations. Specially designed steel connection detail used. Timber was chosen as the major construction material, both because it was relatively easy to transport and handle in a rather difficult environment and because the finished timber structures blended unobtrusively into the surroundings. The area is hostile to timber due to very active warm, brackish water marine borers and is a recognised termite area. 7 Lavender Bay Jetty North Sydney, NSW This jetty was constructed using Koppers double treat hardwood marine piles and was installed in October The piles blend in perfectly with the beautiful, iconic Sydney harbour features and attractions. After over 15 years of service the piles are still in excellent condition. Page 7

There are numerous examples of the concrete piles corroding, spalling and generally looking unsightly, while the timber piles are in as new.

The picture on the right shows a large patch of previously repaired spalled concrete due to reinforcement corrosion, this is still undergoing corrosion as can be seen by the cracking

8 Marina Mirage, Mariners Cove Surfers Paradise, Queensland (April 2008) Koppers supplied a number of double treated marine piles for this marina to be used as protection for the boats so they did not come into contact with the damaging concrete piles. There are numerous examples of the concrete piles corroding, spalling and generally looking unsightly, while the timber piles are in as new. The picture below shows the wear and rust stains on the concrete pole resulting from the pontoon guides. Another good feature of hardwood is its wear resistance. The picture on the right shows a large patch of previously repaired spalled concrete due to reinforcement corrosion, this is still undergoing corrosion as can be seen by the cracking and will have to be repaired again soon. The timber pile next to it is in as new condition. Koppers would normally recommend capping the timber piles as well, but it is likely the marina did not expect the timber piles to last very long they are in for a surprise! Why use two when you could just use the timber one for both pontoon support and protection for the boats? Page 8
