Trns-isomer conformtions Cis-isomer conformtions HOOC Introduction The chemicl structure of Estmn (1,4-cyclohexnedicrboxylic cid) offers the resin nd polymer industry unique dicid intermedite. The hert of the molecule is 1,4-substituted cyclohexne ring. The cycloliphtic structure (illustrted on left) is responsible for mny of the desirble performnce properties tht imprts to polyester resins nd enmels. Compred with romtic nd liphtic dicids, some of the benefits of using re tht it offers n incrementl improvement in hrdness/flexibility rtio over trditionl 1:1 blend of hrd romtic nd flexibilizing liphtic dicids. The stin/detergent/slt spry resistnce benefits re especilly useful in pplince-grde coil cotings (Estmn publiction N-330). Resins contining re lso used in stbilized exterior coil cotings. The performnce benefits of Estmn in coil cotings re described herein. HOOC Hrdness nd flexibility The cycloliphtic structure of Estmn with 1,4-ring substitution results in superior combintion of hrdness nd flexibility without mjor performnce weknesses. Stin/detergent/slt spry resistnce Estmn imprts better stin/detergent/ slt spry resistnce thn liner liphtic dicids, such s (dipic cid), becuse offers more steric shielding of the ester linkges. Processbility Estmn rects fster thn romtic dicids becuse of its greter solubility in molten glycols. 1

Tble 1 shows the generl composition nd the obtined property rnge of the eight resins used in this study. The combintion of Estmn NPG glycol nd 1,6-hexnediol (1,6-HD) ws constnt for ll the resins. The dicid rtio for ech of the eight resins selected is shown in the experimentl design, Figure 1. Ech point represents unique resin composition. Figure 1 Experimentl design The resins described in Figure 1 nd Tble 1 were used to mke enmels bsed on the formultion in Tble 2. All the enmels were djusted to the sme clculted weight percent solids with the solvent blend. The enmels were drwn down onto Bonderite 721 pretreted 24-guge luminum 3003 H14 test pnels nd cured for 30 seconds t 313 C (595 F) to obtin pek metl temperture of 232 C (450 F). Cured enmels rnged in thickness from 0.69 to 0.77 mil nd exhibited MEK resistnce to brekthrough of 120 to 210 double rubs. An utomted drwdown device ws used to mintin film consistency. Regression nlysis ws used to interpret the dt. The contour plots in the following tringles ll hve sttisticl correltion with the dt generted. Only the re defined by the experimentl design is shown. Extrpolting these results into other regions of the tringle is invlid. As with our previous tringle study (Estmn publiction N-335), the trends shown in the plots, rther thn the bsolute vlues, re the significnt informtion. At the top of ech pge is tringulr symbol illustrting the effect of ech dicid intermedite on the performnce property. An explntion for these symbols follows: Desired performnce increses with dicid content. No significnt effect on performnce when dicid content is vried. Desired performnce decreses with incresing dicid content. 3

The sweet spot or desired re, in terms of resin solubility, ppers to be ner the center of the tringle. Resins mde with 2 dicids nd dissolved in the solvent blend verged only 15 dys to medium degree of hze, while 3-dicid component resins verged 155 dys to similr hze point. Both of these dicids re strong in one performnce re but wek in the other. Estmn exhibits the superior combintion of hrdness nd flexibility required for coil cotings without the shortcomings of or. This combintion of hrdness nd flexibility should mke the dicid of choice for high-performnce coil coting pplictions. As indicted by the symbols bove, Estmn purified isophthlic cid () nd re strong in some performnce criteri but hve weknesses in others. Becuse hs performnce strengths (resin processbility nd superior combintion of hrdness nd flexibility) with no mjor disdvntges, it should be considered the dicid of choice for high-performnce coil cotings. For optiml performnce, the coil resin should be bsed on blend of nd. The cycloliphtic structure of is responsible for the unique performnce properties tht it imprts to cotings. The 1,4-substitution llows for mximum utiliztion of movement from the cyclohexne ring. This movement is responsible for the flexibility tht imprts. The cycloliphtic structure is lso responsible for the hrdness nd stin/detergent/slt spry resistnce of -bsed cotings. Coil coting enmels described herein were evluted for exterior durbility both in Florid nd in crbon rc wetherometer. There ws no relible correltion between the two techniques or within the Florid study. As result, ech end user should generte wethering dt for ny formultion intended for exterior use. The use of stbilizers s mens of improving the wethering performnce of these formultions should be investigted. Studies t Estmn with higher solids/high gloss formultions hve reveled tht the wetherbility of enmels bsed on Estmn is enhnced more with hindered mine light stbilizers (HALS) thn with ultrviolet bsorbers (UVAs). In ddition, combintions of Estmn (>50 mole %) with (for flexibility) hve mintined excellent levels of gloss retention fter prolonged exposure to QUVA-340. The use of QUVB- 313 is not suggested s screening tool becuse the low wvelength portion of the exposure spectrum cn led to nomlous results. 8
