1 Valent Packaged Rooftop Units A Fresh Choice for High-Percentage Outdoor Air Designs Valent is a business of Unison Comfort Technologies.
2 When your HVAC system design calls for high-percentage or 100% outdoor air, consider the Valent Advantage. Energy-recovery, geothermal and heat pump HVAC design strategies are a green and growing trend in today s market. Coupled with these environmental concerns is customer and regulatory insistence on indoor air quality. And of course, providing occupant comfort, or the proper conditions for industrial processes, is a given. Valent stands ready with the products, people, and expertise to meet all these requirements. Valent rooftop units can process air through mechanical cooling alone or with the addition of energy recovery. Units can include an energy recovery wheel or flat plate heat exchanger. Specializing in refrigeration, Valent offers units with advanced options such as heat pumps. Several series of units are offered in a range of capacities and sizes, to more precisely meet the parameters of any given design. WHO IS VALENT? Valent Air Management Systems, founded in 2006, is emerging as a new leader in the manufacture of high-percentage outdoor air packaged rooftop units. Valent has experienced dramatic growth due to customer satisfaction with high-quality products, smooth start-up, and ongoing reliability. Over 1500 rooftop units have rolled off Valent assembly lines and are operating in buildings across North America. A business of Unison Comfort Technologies, Valent is headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota at a 225,000 square foot plant co-occupied with another Unison business, Innovent air handling equipment. Distribution is through a network of carefullyselected representatives, backed by expert factory support and training. ADVANTAGES FOR ANY APPLICATION OR UILDING Valent packaged rooftop units provide solutions for a wide range of vertical markets. Highlighted here are several where system designers and specifiers find the products are particularly suitable. Education: Schools and universities demand effective learning environments and that often means high outdoor air requirements for spaces such as classrooms, corridors, and gymnasiums into a single packaged rooftop. These buildings often use dedicated outdoor systems (DOAS) to supply the correct and healthy amount of ventilation. Valent responds by integrating energy recovery, heating, cooling and refrigeration into a single packaged rooftop. Many school districts have looked to Valent for the value they were seeking in the challenging balance of first cost and total operating cost. Hospitality: Lodging properties depend on guest satisfaction to maintain profitable revenue levels. Humidity and odors can be a source of dissatisfaction, and may lead to extra expense to replace carpeting and furniture before the end of their useful life. Valent units manage outside air delivered to corridors, with the added flexibility of roof or pad mounting. Laboratories: High levels of outdoor air are often required to maintain the air changes demanded in laboratory environments. In addition, pressurization is a key factor in these spaces to prevent the recirculation of contaminated process air. Not only are Valent products designed to handle large outdoor air loads; through standard VFD-driven, direct-drive plenum fans they are able to precisely control space and duct static pressures. Process: Many mission-critical industrial processes require cooling or strict environmental control to uphold product quality. Valent offers a number of cooling packages designed to maximize control over these spaces regardless if the unit is completely stand-alone or part of a greater system. Commercial Ventilation: Valent equipment includes features such as Digital Scroll compressors, modulating hot gas reheat and direct-drive fans to provide excellent control over large amounts of outdoor air. The benefits of these advanced features can be extended to units handling minimal amounts of outdoor air as well. Valent assembly line in Minneapolis, MN. Schools and universities demand effective learning environments and that often means the high outdoor air requirements that Valent delivers. Valent units provide ventilation which is essential to the health and safety of researchers and students working in labs. 2 3
3 Premium Quality Construction and Comprehensive Packaging Valent units are constructed with premium features to reduce energy consumption, increase control over occupant comfort, and lengthen the product s service life. Valent units arrive at your jobsite comprehensively equipped, assembled, and tested ready to startup smoothly. POWERFUL AND FLEXILE CONTROLS An integrated controls platform with intelligent control strategies is essential to getting the most from a mechanical HVAC unit. When coupled with an energy-efficient rooftop and building automation system (if present), integrated unit controls increase occupant comfort and reduce energy consumption. Valent s experience has shown it is often a challenge to meet today s demands for economy and sustainability with field-mounted rooftop unit controls. Standard Features: All units ship with a unit controller, LCD display, internal time-clock, and basic discharge air control sequence providing at a minimum, stand-alone operation. Discharge Air Control: Two forms of discharge air control are available from Valent one with, the other without space temperature and humidity reset functionality. Variable Air Volume: Since all Valent units include standard VFD-driven supply and exhaust fans, the ability to perform variable air volume sequences is always an option. A Cooling & Dehumidification Four or six-row evaporator or CW coil for reliable and consistent dehumidification performance Modulating hot gas reheat system for dehumidification sequence Digital Scroll compressors (refrigerated units) for capacity control Filtration MERV 8, MERV 11, MERV 13 and MERV 14 filtration available to maintain indoor air quality levels MERV 8 filters on the intake airstream of energy recovery devices to extend service life and reduce maintenance E D A C Energy Recovery Sensible and latent energy recovery wheel for maximum load reduction in humid climates Sensible flat-plate heat exchanger for dry climates or where mixing is undesirable D Airflow Management Direct-drive plenum fans handle large static pressures Standard VFDs for balancing or VAV / pressurization control Standard modulating return and outdoor air dampers for active control over air quantities E Controls Single point wiring to minimize field connections Powerful microprocessor controller safely operates each onboard component and system F C Valent VPRE model equipped with total enthalpy wheel and water-source heat pump refrigeration. D Casing Construction 2 foam-injected double-wall panels for structural rigidity extend service life 2 foam-injected double-wall doors with quarter-turn handles to access internal components F Sophisticated refrigeration control sequences provide safe, reliable control while minimizing energy usage. The controls on Valent units offer ease of integration to building automation systems, and a data-rich environment so end users have visibility to what s happening in their unit. Controls are a key characteristic of the Valent offering, and an important differentiation from other manufacturers approach. Each Valent unit incorporates a powerful LynxSpring Jenesys controller to enhance reliability and simplify the user interface. When connected to a building automation system, the controller increases data visibility and control functionality. Demand Control: Standard modulating dampers can be used to change the quantity of outdoor air based on space needs. uilding Pressurization Control: Supply fan, exhaust fan, or dampers can be used to maintain a pressure differential within a served space. In addition, building pressurization control can be paired with a variable air volume or demand control sequence for maximum comfort and energy savings. Communication: ACnet IP, ACnet MSTP, or LonTalk communication available for integration into a new or existing building management system. An optional web-based interface (Web UI) is also available for control of the unit over a network when a full MS system is not present. 4 5
4 Thorough Run-Testing Program Today s economic pressure make it essential HVAC units go through their start-up phase quickly, smoothly and predictably. Commissioning issues and construction delays can impact the bottom line of all the players in building project. Valent doesn t accept the premise that on-the-job-site work of assembly, piping and wiring which are better done in the factory is acceptable. Each and every Valent unit undergoes a 1.5 hour run-testing procedure. elow are some of the key systems evaluated and verified in our testing. Valent employees run-test each and every unit before it leaves the factory. RUN-TEST CHECKLIST General Review overall controls system, measure amperage of all motors and compressors, dielectric withstand testing (hipot test). Refrigerant System Verify evaporator, hot-gas reheat, and condensing performance as well as record sub-cooling and superheat for all refrigeration circuits. Heating System Review settings and performance of indirect gas furnace, electric heat, or Temperator heating system as equipped. Airflow System Check direct-drive fans for balanced rotation inside unit casing and review operation and programming of factory-supplied VFD. A ROOFTOP MODEL FOR EVERY NEED Valent manufactures three distinct groupings of packaged rooftop ventilators for multiple high outdoor air applications. VPR / VPRX Series A packaged rooftop offering with the capability of effectively handling wide ranges of outdoor air temperatures, humidities, and airflows. VPRE Series An energy recovery ventilator with heating and cooling utilizing a sensible and latent energy recovery wheel. Designed to eliminate the use of a stand-alone energy recovery ventilator with a separate packaged rooftop. THE VALENT ADVANTAGE When designing and building products, Valent adheres to four core attributes: Quality construction Comprehensive packaging Intelligent controls Thorough run-testing program Your local Valent rep can tell you more about the advantages these can bring to your next project. Over 1500 Valent units are found on rooftops across North America. VPRP Series An energy recovery ventilator with heating and cooling utilizing a flat-plate heat exchanger for sensible heat recovery. Originally commissioned for arid climates, the VPRP may also be used when indoor spaces have abnormally high humidity levels or when odor transfer is a concern. Unlike an enthalpy wheel, the flat plate heat exchanger in the VPRP has no moving parts that require regular maintenance. 6 7
