1 Band 5 Speech and Language Therapist This profile applies to posts which are suitable for newly and more recently qualified speech and language therapists. There is an assumption of a degree of autonomous practice at this level, as reflected in core responsibilities. The speech and language therapist is able to function independently and fulfils the core responsibilities identified. They may participate in S< students placements. They will supervise work of assistants and volunteers when required. They will be able to manage their own time and have an ability to prioritise task with minimal support They will manage a defined caseload independently. They will participate in the development and delivery of training to others. 3 Encounters unpleasant/highly unpleasant conditions from time to time related to client contact Band 6 Specialist Speech and Language Therapist The speech and language therapist works independently with a developed level of clinical expertise and fulfils the core responsibilities identified. They may take full S< student placements and contribute to the assessment of students on examination placements. They will supervise assistants and volunteers when required and will contribute to the induction, mentoring and support of other more junior staff and may facilitate clinical case discussions as part of peer review. However, they will not be responsible for the supervision or line management of other qualified S<s. Staff within this band will still be gaining wider experience and expertise through clinical training and support. They are able to make independent decisions about caseload management. 13 Band 8b/c Consultant Speech and Language Therapist The post requires a Speech and Language Therapist with a very high level of clinical expertise, providing a service within a tertiary setting or into a service which is provided on a regional or national basis and which has a regional/ national reputation for excellence. This post will also carry many of the responsibilities identified above in the Principal profile. The postholder would have very highly developed clinical skills recognized within their region. They offer training at Regional and/or National Level on a uni-disciplinary or multi-disciplinary basis. May be involved in research at specialty level and provide advisory expertise at regional/national level. Likely to be published and may provide high level training on under-graduate and postgraduate training courses. This job profile should not be confused with the regionally developed Consultant AHP grading descriptors.
