It protects and promotes. It maintains the freshness and integrity of packed product. It facilitates safe and easy transport and allows us to eat and drink on the go. Convenient packaging that has barriers to protect against liquids, grease and moisture vapour is as important as ever in making life work for products in the freezer, in the chiller cabinet and for take-away food. It is recognised that consumer demand for products with sound environmental credentials is of increasing importance. We love our world and want to protect it. Solutions that offer reduced environmental impact and easy recycling are therefore increasingly in demand from the public and brand owners alike. We believe in high-quality, sustainable barrier board packaging and so have developed a range of easy to recycle barrier boards to meet these demands. Are you a believer?

3 UNIQUE WATER-BASED BARRIERS When Kotkamills invested in the new BM2 cartonboard machine in 2016, it was specifically designed to be able to produce market leading baseboards. It was also designed with a special coating unit to be able to create packaging material with integral barriers directly on the machine. This is unique. Nobody has done this before. OUR INNOVATIVE ON-MACHINE COATING PROCESS MAKES BARRIER BOARDS THAT CAN BE EASILY RECYCLED AND REPULPED WITH NORMAL PAPER WASTE The barriers created on the machine are water-based, dispersion coatings. This means that they are designed to be easy to repulp and recycle with standard paper and board waste. Most importantly, they are fully and more easily repulped than the typical paper cups having extrusion coated polymer normally used as barriers because they are not a thick, thermoplastic layer tightly bonded to the back of the board. Our Barrier layer braks down easily in the standard repulping process, without any need for segregation of PLA or special treatment.

This supports the work being done by society, industry and governments to improve recovery rates to increase recycling by making it more worthwhile to do so. We believe in recovery, reuse and recycling. To enable the ISLA range of food service barrier boards to be widely adopted by the food service industry, they have been designed to be run the existing cup and plate making machinery. We have the know-how and technology to reduce the environmental impact of disposable cups and other barrier packaging. Our innovations offer a way for the supply and demand of these products to meet in practice. Besides offering our customers more sustainable products, we are committed to working in a sustainable way every day and using raw materials, energy, water and other resources efficiently. All our products are recyclable and safe to use, and are mainly produced from renewable materials. The wood fibre used is procured from Finnish wood suppliers who verify the origin of the raw materials and ensure the legality of the fibre sources. We are self-sufficient in terms of electricity and heat energy. Approximately a third of the energy used comes from renewable fuels. As members of the Paper Cup Recovery & Recycling Group (PCRRG), we are working to improve recovery and recycling of disposable paper cups. Designing easily recyclable barrier cupstock is part of the task to create safe, sustainable and fit for purpose products with reduced environmental impact.
