Agri-footprint - LCA food database An introduction 5
Agri-footprint 3.0 An introduction life Agri-footprint 3.0 is a high quality and comprehensive cycle inventory (LCI) database, focused on the agriculture and food sector. In the coming days: Agri-footprint 3.0 will be available for openlca users! 6
Meet the developers An enthusiastic team of food LCA experts Hans Blonk Jasper Scholten Bart Durlinger Roline Broekema CEO Senior consultant Senior consultant Senior consultant Lody Kuling Consultant Elena Koukouna Consultant Mike van Paassen Consultant
Meet the developers Blonk Consultants Blonk Consultants is an international leader in the field of environment, sustainability, nutrition and health. We advise businesses, governments and other organisations on environmental and sustainability issues facing the agrifood sector.. Sustainable products & supply chains Life Cycle Assessment & Carbon Footprints Healthy & Sustainable diets Sustainable Nutrition Assessment Sustainable business management & reporting Sustainability Performance Management 8
Why did we develop Agri-footprint? An introduction Facilitate transparency and a more rapid transformation to sustainable food supply chains; A food specific LCI database did not exist; Need for agri-food LCIs due to; Approximately 25% of all LCAs are agri-food related; Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) projects (EU). No opportunities to publish company specific data in LCI databases. 9
3 allocation options Mass, Energy, Economic Land Use Change Fully integrated 5,000+ products & processes Crops, (intermediate) products from processing, feed compounds, food products, animal production systems Transparent Background documentation publically available Consistent with LCIA ILCD and ReCiPe Critically reviewed By RMIT University (version 1.0) and RIVM (National Institute for Public Health and the Environmental, the Netherlands) (version 2.0) Frequent updates 2014 Release of first version in SimaPro 2015 Release of Agri-footprint Release Agri-footprint 3.0 available for different LCA software (openlca, SimaPro 8.4) 2017 Release of Agri-footprint 4.0 (expected end of 2017) Used for Carbon footprints Hot-spot analyses Environmental product declarations (EPD) Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) screenings (comparative) product Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) Defining sustainable nutrition Widely accepted and used By the food industry, LCA community, scientific community and governments worldwide 11
Wheat An example Wheat flour Wheat middlings Wheat bran Stable Building material Bedding material Wheat germ 12
Data in Agri-footprint What is available in the database? Scope: from cradle-to-gate Data quality: company specific & literature Seed production Machinery & infrastructure (capital goods) Energy consumption Irrigation water Manure production & application Transportation & logistics Pesticide & fertilizer: production & application Land occupation & land use change Pretreatment & processing 13

Agrifirm s Sustainability Labels Application 18
Global Feed Lifecyle Institute Application GFLI is a global initiative to bring major feed organizations together to develop a freely and publicly available feed LCA database and tool; Provide LCI and LCA of feed ingredients to LCA community, tool developers and business experts; Data is generated with Agri-footprint framework, making use of the Agrifootprint development tools and background data; Data will be available in Agri-footprint.
