Case study the Khapra Beetle The khapra beetle, Trogoderma granarium is a stored product pest of great significance, nominated as one of the 100 worst invasive species It infests grain and cereal products, particularly wheat, barley, oats, rye, maize, rice, flour, malt, and noodles, although it will feed on almost any dried plant or animal matter Khapra beetle s importance however, lies not only in its capacity to cause serious damage to stored commodities, but also the impact it has on trade Khapra beetle are occasionally intercepted at ports by the Australian Quarantine Inspection Service in vessel holds and ship s stores however it was never found in Australia
Before
After
To prove successful eradication, Khapra Beetle monitoring was conducted for two years: 44 Trécé Storgard traps placed in: treated and neighbouring houses shipping container receival facility cardboard recycling facility waste transfer station Traps serviced: weekly for the first month fortnightly during warmer months monthly during cold season Trapping program follows fumigation
Post-eradication trapping sites
ZERO The most important number in Surveillance is Quality and quantity of zero data
Quality and quantity of zero data Habitat Information Habitat risk Weather conditions Trap placement Lure efficiency Activity Information Trap barcode ID Replace trap/lure prompt Sample barcode Collector Information Collector ID Collector certification Collector efficiency Spatial/Temporal Information Date & time stamp GPS decimal degrees Site & sample imagery
Data quality, quantity and Chain of Evidence Data accuracy is improved through immediate field validation where the user cannot proceed unless data checks are satisfied Visits to sites can be audited with GPS position, barcode and PDA clock Printed barcode sample ID provides chain of evidence Transcription errors are eliminated as there is no data entry, information is simply imported Data can be synchronised from field locations using USB, WiFi, bluetooth or any internet connection
